Trump Reportedly Wants to Buy Greenland for the United States

President Donald Trump reportedly wants to acquire Greenland for the United States. Your eyes have not deceived you.

This is real. Can you even imagine the ramifications of such a thing? It’s hard to comprehend.

Personally, I love this idea, and not just to watch heads explode across the country. It would be great for America and for Greenland, a country which, let’s face it, just doesn’t get the attention it deserves.

This report by Vivian Salama, Rebecca Ballhaus, Andrew Restuccia and Michael C. Bender of the Wall Street Journal is an amazing read:

President Trump Eyes a New Real-Estate Purchase: Greenland

President Trump made his name on the world’s most famous island. Now he wants to buy the world’s biggest.

The idea of the U.S. purchasing Greenland has captured the former real-estate developer’s imagination, according to people familiar with the discussions, who said Mr. Trump has, with varying degrees of seriousness, repeatedly expressed interest in buying the ice-covered autonomous Danish territory between the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans.

In meetings, at dinners and in passing conversations, Mr. Trump has asked advisers whether the U.S. can acquire Greenland, listened with interest when they discuss its abundant resources and geopolitical importance and, according to two of the people, has asked his White House counsel to look into the idea.

Some of his advisers have supported the concept, saying it was a good economic play, two of the people said, while others dismissed it as a fleeting fascination that will never come to fruition. It is also unclear how the U.S. would go about acquiring Greenland even if the effort were serious.

With a population of about 56,000, Greenland is a self-ruling part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and while its government decides on most domestic matters, foreign and security policy is handled by Copenhagen. Mr. Trump is scheduled to make his first visit to Denmark early next month, although the visit is unrelated, these people said.

This part is great:

People outside the White House have described purchasing Greenland as an Alaska-type acquisition for Mr. Trump’s legacy, advisers said. The few current and former White House officials who had heard of the notion described it with a mix of anticipation and apprehension, since it remains unknown how far the president might push the idea.

Students of history may know this isn’t the first time the government floated around this idea.

The Associated Press reports:

Wanna Buy Greenland? The United States Once Did

The United States in 1946 proposed to pay Denmark $100 million to buy Greenland after flirting with the idea of swapping oil-rich land in Alaska for strategic parts of the bleak Arctic island, documents in the National Archives show.

The $100 million was to be in gold. And even though the sale did not go through, the United States ended up with the military bases it wanted anyway.

Discovery of the documents, which have been declassified since the early 1970s, was first reported Sunday by the Copenhagen newspaper Jyllands-Posten.

Imagine visiting the lovely capital city of Nuuk.

Just for fun, here’s a recent news report in Greenlandic from Kalaallit Nunaata Radioa:

Mr. President, make this happen.

Don’t take no for an answer. It’s just a negotiation tactic.

Pretty soon we’ll have Canada surrounded, and They’ll have to surrender.

It’s another Master-Troll.

If you truly believe in globull warming, then you must believe this is some real estate that is going to appreciate in value, bigly.

UnCivilServant in reply to Paul. | August 16, 2019 at 8:02 am

    It is valuable real estate.

It’ll form part of our strategic glacier reserve.

JusticeDelivered in reply to Paul. | August 16, 2019 at 8:07 am

Actually, Greenland would be a good acquisition. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_change_adaptation_in_Greenland

There are lots of extractable resources, oil, minerals, etc.

That’s what I was thinking. This sounds like one the trolls that Trump puts out periodically to see if he can get his opponents to hyperventilate.

That or he’s performing an old counterintelligence trick. This is where you “leak” to a select few (some suspect of being leakers) some outrageous idea or claim as fact so you know that if they are leakers they will not be able to help themselves and will leak it as soon as they can. They then reveal who they are by what the leak is about. They can also be monitored before so as to make it more known what their conduits are so that those conduits can be watched more carefully in the future.

This topic of buying Greenland is just the sort of thing that would attract the never trumpers and the orangeman bad Obama regime left overs.

You now know who will leak stuff and to whom and you can either fire them or feed them nonsense to confuse your enemies both home and abroad.

Buy Greenland and give it to Canada as a Birthday, Dominion Day, present. You know they have always wanted it.

Could we trade something, like CA? Well, maybe CA is not a good idea, but, there is Puerto Rico.

JusticeDelivered in reply to amwick. | August 16, 2019 at 8:10 am

Now that is a good idea, Puerco Rico has turned in an island equivalent of our inner cities and they suck up a great deal of our tax dollars.

The Friendly Grizzly in reply to amwick. | August 16, 2019 at 8:11 am

The downtick is mine, and not intended; I was aiming for Reply. I was stationed in Puerto Rico for a year. It took me about three months to start thinking that giving it to Cuba was a good idea. Why? Because Cuba would find Puerto Rico a severe and expensive burden.

We need to cut Puerto Rico loose.
    Soon!
The idea of purchasing Greenland is intriguing- but how would they vote?! Do they lean left (as I would imagine)?
    Would it be a state?

Considering tha Cjina is making overtures to Denmark to have an influence in Greenland, Trump’s idea makes sense

Oh, Greenland is a dreadful place
A land that’s never green
Where there’s ice and snow, and the whalefishes blow
And daylight is seldom seen, brave boys
And daylight is seldom seen

tic...tic...BOOM | August 16, 2019 at 8:01 am

Today, it is “Trump’s Folly”. In 30 years it will be seen as a brilliant purchase. As far as Alaska goes, it was a brilliant move also, except that it inflicted Lisa Murkowski on us.

    UnCivilServant in reply to tic...tic...BOOM. | August 16, 2019 at 8:06 am

Serious note – I crack jokes about it, but I do think it would be in our long term interests to aquire the territory if we can. Especially when you factor in the strategic rivals it locks out, and the share of the arctic economic resources it commands.

I think it is more a strategic ploy to have a larger footprint in the Arctic to prevent Russia and China from seizing it. Canada and Greenland are the only other presence and Alaska doesn’t count.

I am not away of any Greenland resources (other than glaciers) that the US doesn’t already have in abundance. Even though having them under our control keeps them out of the hands of our enemies and rivals, I don’t think exploiting those resources would be our main reason for doing so. For China and Russia to dominate the Arctic with a major infrastructure presence would pose an unacceptable threat.

It would be a brilliant move! We know that China is running around the globe contracting for all the natural resources it can find so h Greenland would be our very own private reserve. Of course, we can make a fortune selling a bit to China with its few billion people.

    Valerie in reply to Gersh204. | August 16, 2019 at 1:34 pm

China is big. Why would they need to tie up world-wide natural resources?

I am sure somebody has been considering that question for a while. One thing we can do, is outbid them, if we have to.

As long as we’re shopping, let’s buy Mexico. Then we could use our troops against the drug lords and make everyone’s lives better. Heck, why pay for it and to whom would we send the check? Let’s just annex Mexico, as it’s uncontrolled wilderness rn.

Finally, a New Green-land Deal I can support!

would make monitoring of the GIUK gap much easier.
pipe dream though really.

Seriously? Unnamed “sources” quoted by the Stalinist AP and the #NeverTrump GOPe Wall Street Journal are hardly credible. Far more likely is the scenario where some left wing kook living in his parents’ basement started the rumor and “respectable” journalists ran wild with it.

Remember, dear readers, these are the same Joseph Goebbels wannabes who created the Russian Hoax out of thin air (winning umpteen Pulitzer Prizes in the process) and now see white supremacists lurking under every bed. The safest thing to do is assume every article and report from the Establishment Media like AP and WSJ is a 100% lie unless proven otherwise.

these are the same Joseph Goebbels wannabes who created the Russian Hoax out of thin air (winning umpteen Pulitzer Prizes in the process) and now see white supremacists lurking under every bed.

But are suddenly aghast at conspiracy theories about Jeffrey Epstein’s death…

Ah, the Greenland New Deal. Trump is Best Troll. So funny to watch the liberals tie themselves in knots taking this seriously.

First thing I would assume, absent further info, is that this is a Leftoid fabrication, and nothing at all to do with DJT. The next step is to denounce him for deliberately promoting “global warming” so that he can make a killing in real estate which is now glacier but will soon be arable land.

Hogwash, of course, but no more ridiculous than the idea that the President is a Russian stooge, and we know how well that one has persisted.

I can see it now.

Trump Ski Resort
Trump Hotel
Trump International Airport
Trump Bobsledding.

Carve it into 30 States each containing a Republican Majority. I like the State of New California.

Trump: “Global warming? Fake news! Ice in the US has increased 100,000% under my administration!”

This idea is not the worst I have ever heard. Off the top of my head:

1. Strategic location on airplane routes
2. Arctic presence
3. Population size means it would remain a territory for the considerable future
4. Fishing fleet catch limits could be coordinated with current US based fishing fleet; maybe that increases catch limits and keeps some of those fishing industry small towns going
5. Purchase by U.S. should work to prevent meddling/mischief by Russia in Arctic due to increased U.S. presence
6. Prevents Chinese economic meddling
7. Acquisition of natural resources to be kept in the ground for a rainy day since domestic production is already so high
8. From what I remember a good portion is basically inaccessible and could be designated as a wilderness area, as long as strong retention of oil/gas extraction rights remain
9. I seem to recall them doing some innovative things with geothermal energy production as well…

All told this is not a bad idea. Assuming of course this is not a ‘canary trap’ or an epic troll…..

All foolishness aside, I think Trump was giving the citizens of Greenland something to think about. The Chinese are trying to negotiate a three airport deal with a country of 56,000. Everyone on the planet knows that China has nothing good planned Greenland and if given a choice, the citizens might just opt for America to be the one to invest in their country. We already have military and radar facilities there now. Trump seems to know when to throw the dogs in the msm a bone just when they are getting hungry!

DouglasJBender | August 16, 2019 at 12:58 pm

I sat buy it, and have Trump name it, “Global Warming Rocks”. If Global Warming isn’t real, then the name is an ironic reference to the island’s rocks. If Global Warming is real, then the name is celebratory.

I could “summer” in Greenland.

DouglasJBender | August 16, 2019 at 12:59 pm

I say buy it, and have Trump name it, “Global Warming Rocks”. If Global Warming isn’t real, then the name is an ironic reference to the island’s rocks. If Global Warming is real, then the name is celebratory.

Huh. The short description for this plan amounts to quote the New Greenland Deal”.
Couple it with giving Puerto Rico to Cuba, and it looks like a massive win. Unfortunately that means that everyone in Puerto Rico would probably move to the USA, as they have automatic citizenship upon landing.
Why is that not a plus? To start with, Puerto Rico has a level of corruption that exceeds even Florida, with living on disability while working for cash being at one of its largest economic sectors. The Puerto Ricans who have energy and ambition are already here, The population still there has a disproportionate number of the retired, dependent and grifting.

With all this global warming stuff going on, we will need a new island paradise since Hawaii will be under water.

So, Trump’s idea of buying Greenland from Denmark is so popular that the troll-bots soy drinkers are force-trending “Denmark Offers to Buy the US”. Heads-shake, eye-roll, face-palm trifecta.

You could make cars there. Fjord Motor Company.

“Have you driven a Fjord lately?”

This is the kind of Green New Deal I can get behind!

I would make Iceland an attractive offer. Because Rekjavik, January and Scandinian women in miniskirts.

I was like, how do you put up with this? My immediate second thought was i am happy you do.

The nice thing about buying Greenland is I need more Polar Bears to hunt.

Interesting idea by Trump. It will come down to this: if the inhabitants of Greenland see themselves more as Greenlanders than Danish, the sale of the island is possible.

President Trump, please make Greenland a US territory, not a state, and deport all Democrats there.
