Police at Washington State Disappointed With New Gun Control Law

“…the more rigorous background check process makes it difficult for the police force and students to store guns because it would require the police department to initiate a background check every time a student asked to check out their firearm…”

The police don’t like this new law because it makes it harder for law-abiding students to arm themselves.

Campus Reform reports:

WSU police ‘disappointed’ after new state gun law takes effect

The Washington State University assistant chief of police says he is “disappointed” after a new gun law took effect.

The law, called Initiative 1639, forbids anyone under the age of 21 from purchasing a semi-automatic rifle, according to the website of the Washington State Office of the Attorney General. The law also prohibits the selling or transferring of semi-automatic rifles to anyone under 21.

In July, further regulations with Initiative 1639 became active, requiring stricter background checks for purchasing or transferring a semi-automatic rifle. These background checks include a standard criminal background check and a mental health check, which could take up to seven to ten days, according to The Daily Evergreen.

According to WSU assistant chief of police, Steven Hansen, the more rigorous background check process makes it difficult for the police force and students to store guns because it would require the police department to initiate a background check every time a student asked to check out their firearm. The new law would also require a mental health check by a state mental health provider each time a student asked to check out their firearm, a process that could take over a week, according to the Daily Evergreen.

The legislature obviously must have given to broad a meaning to the word “transfer”. Perhaps the definition should have been limited to conveyance or re-designation of ownership.

You should have put *sarcasm* in your response. Gun grabbers will only be happy once everyone but them are disarmed.

Gun control only ends well for those who control the guns.

Bingo! You have deduced the very intended consequence of this carefully crafted law. The key is NOT enhanced background checks. That is the ruse. He real key is in redefining “transfer” to mean transfer of possession, not transfer of ownership as it means in EVERY OTHER TRANSACTION. Under the new law, you could not ask a friend to let you shoot his gun at the range without you going through the background check. You couldn’t, legally, hand your pistol to your wife to look at unless she went through a background check. And if she tried to hand it back to you… yes, another background check. This has nothing to do with reducing crime and everything to do with attacking our gun culture.

I don’t think the legislature had anything to do with this.

thes3e laws aren’t designed to make anyone safer, or to be easy to follow.

they are designed to produce criminal violations by accident, and to deter people from exercising their right to keep & bear arms.
