Competition for the radical base: Warren eating Bernie’s lunch

Competition for the radical base: Warren eating Bernie’s lunch

Bernie has fallen, can he get up?

For the past week or so we’ve been treated to a breathless media elated that Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) is “surging” in her bid for the 2020 Democrat nomination for president.

The problem? Her “surge” seems to be directly related to the cratering campaign of socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).

The Washington Post reports:

Let’s be clear: Warren’s gains are modest at this point. But she is getting more attention on cable news, and more stories written about her in other media (see here, here, or here). While, nationally, she still trails former vice president Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) in most polls, a new Economist/YouGov poll shows her passing Sanders into second place, and a Monmouth University poll in the key early state of Nevada also shows her in second place, as well.

Most notably, in the Des Moines Register poll that came out last weekend (the gold standard of Iowa polls), she moved from 9 percent in the newspaper’s March poll to 15 percent now, while Biden fell from 27 percent support to 24 percent, and Sanders went from 25 percent to 16 percent. Just as important, 61 percent of potential caucus-goers said they were considering supporting her, the same number Biden got.

Ultimately, Warren is “pulling support from Sanders now,” and that spells bad news for her in the long run.  Her multi-pronged schemes to remake the American economy are one example of the sort of thing that appeals to Bernie voters but will not play well beyond that leftist-progressive-socialist audience.

Just this week, the New York Times gushingly enthused that “Elizabeth Warren Has Lots of Plans. Together, They Would Remake the Economy” and “Liberal Wonks, or at Least Elizabeth Warren, Have a Plan for That: The surprising power of evidence-based progressivism.”

Warren’s ambitious plans to “remake” the economy in some “progressive” image are a non-starter outside the Bernie bro enclave of “Democratic socialists,” and the left is wary of the way that Warren is soaking up Bernie voters.

For example, the Chicago Sun-Times suggests that “Warren, Sanders should agree not to doom each other’s chances.

The two leading progressives in the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination race are on a collision course.

These left-leaning policy provocateurs are fighting for progressive love. Both have richly earned it.

. . . .  The unabashed democratic socialist from Vermont is building on his unrivaled army of small-dollar donors and their devotion to “feeling the Bern.” He is calling for a Green New Deal, Medicare for all, free public college tuition, universal child care and pre-K.

U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, the former Harvard University professor from Massachusetts, is toting a plethora of proposals. There’s her pitch to split up technology behemoths such as Amazon, a plan to jail misbehaving corporate executives, and yes, her own brand of Medicare for all.

You want the government to do more and make the wealthy pay for it? Her campaign T-shirts declare, “Warren has a plan for that!”

Both candidates are touting ideas that are, at turns, uber-progressive, radical, even revolutionary. They aim to alter the American economy in favor of the poorest, to the detriment of the richest. Their ideas could fundamentally change our culture and alter our democracy.

. . . .  There’s one simple solution. Warren and Sanders must get it together, by getting together.

If they truly want to put a progressive in the White House, drop the arms race and forge an alliance. Cut a deal.

. . . . If they truly believe in their plans to bring radical change that can remake America, one of them must step aside.

Cranky Bernie is unlikely to accept this advice, of course. And I suspect that Warren won’t, either, so we’re going to be treated to increasingly wacky leftist plans that will be hard for them to shake if either actually gets the Democrat nomination.

Douglas Schoen, writing at the Hill, notes that Warren’s surge “spells bad news for the Democratic Party.”

Simply put, this recent momentum from Warren spells bad news for the Democratic Party. The lawmaker from Massachusetts has centered her run around liberal big government policies that once only appealed to the left most fringes of the party. To be sure, her jump in the polls is indicative of how far left the party has moved and suggests that the party will nominate a radical candidate who is unpalatable to independents and moderates, two groups essential to beating Donald Trump in the general election.

. . . . To be victorious in 2020, the Democratic Party must focus on pushing moderate economic policies that do not involve radical wealth taxes, on fixing the health care system without adopting extreme “Medicare for All” policies, and on compromises on immigration. To be sure, I believe in the Democratic primary process and that competing ideas and challenging the status quo is what we should do in a democracy. However, looking ahead to 2020, if the main goal of the party is to beat Trump, we must advocate for center of left policies that result in steady progress for the country, while still appealing to crucial moderates and independents.

Admittedly, the rise Warren in recent polls suggests that the Democratic Party is moving in the opposite direction towards more big government social and economic policies that will certainly turn away the majority of the general electorate. Ultimately, if Democratic primary voters moves towards supporting these policies and the candidates who advocate for them, the only thing they will end up with is four more years of Trump.

He’s not wrong.

My best guess is this is media driven. A repeat of the dems in 16

If Biden gets the nomination: it probably will be 2016 all over again. If Sanders or Warren get the nomination: it will be 1972 all over again.

What these progressive fascists have to do is pretend to be moderates and once in power stop pretending and be the communists that’s in their heart.

Warren lied and walked all over the Cherokee Nation to make her career. Why is this fraud taken seriously by anyone?

Your forgetting Lying Crooked Hillary. Before the election she sold the favors of her office for hundreds of millions, betrayed the country by mishandling classified data and failed in job as SoS. Yet the progressive fascists accepted her lies and excuses and.chose her to run for President.

I haven’t forgotten about Hillary. She’s not running in 2020. And even though I think she should be in jail, she has never faced official justice. Her supporters have fallen back on that excuse since Whitewater and cattle futures. Never proven, already investigated, move on, etc.

Warren, on the other hand, proved she has been a racist fraud. I voted straight (D) my first election because I was young and stupid. But there’s no way I could have supported someone like Warren.

The entire (D) party is so bat $#!% crazy, but that’s not the scary part. The scary part is half the country is OK with it.

My point I that if the progressive fascists were willing to overlook Lying Crooked Hillary’s crimes then nothing that these candidates have done or will do matters.

Understood. But, as I pointed out, the difference between Warren and Hillary is that Warren was actually found guilty of something. Hillary hasn’t. Warren was not found guilty of breaking the law, but she broke a code of leftist conduct: whitey stomping on non-whitey.

It’s clear that Warren gets a pass. It is not clear why. No one can defend what she did. Absolutely no one. Yet she has gone UP in aggregate polling all year and sits in 3rd place right now in the RCP group poll.

They didn’t care. She was woman hear her shrill… or roar.

They have moved to identity politics at it’s worst, pushing for the “historic” rather than for what is good for the people, and not for just the elite power-hungry. Bernie and she both have a big issue with selling their rich are evil shtick, Bernie is a millionaire, she is wealthy too. Both earned their money through fraud. It’s hard to sell going against the rich and claiming they are evil incarnate when you are wealthy, because you are pretty much saying you are evil by your own definition.

The economy has improved dramatically under Trump, many who were bogged down in unemployment under Obama’s policies are now seeing the fruit of their labors paying.

What bothers me is the promises of “free stuff”. Free healthcare, which is bogus, free college, again bogus, and so on. This is bribing the people to gain power for themselves using taxpayer dollars. It is supposed to be against the law to do that, but hey, it’s campaign promises. Just like Obama’s healthcare plan which was supposed to save thousands and ended up costing everyone more money.

Go read a liberal blog, seriously. You will see two posters debating the merits of Biden and Warren and one of the posters will just come out and say “I support Warren because I think I will get more out of her”.

Because, as you well know, no lie or crime is of any consequence to those afflicted with TDS, except the crime of not having TDS.

What’s the overall strategy? Veer as left as possible to secure the nomination, then veer right to the center for the general election?

Edward in reply to walls. | June 17, 2019 at 7:13 am

That has been the method for a long time and they know they can count on the MSM to provide cover and never highlight the Socialist-Democrat nominee’s changed position on issues.

That’s what worked for Obama the Liar.

If you compare L Elizabeth Warren to Hillary Clinton: They have similar leftist positions, they’re both corrupt, and both have extremely irritating speaking voices. On the bright side, Warren coughs less than Hillary, and has a lot more energy.

Warren also doesn’t have a Scooby-van at the ready.

Bernie is losing favor because he really is a joke. He is a phony who made a lot of money from politics alone. From OUR tax money.

Warren got her job through fraud, through claiming she was something she clearly wasn’t and became wealthy because of doing so.

The media will push Warren because she isn’t an old white guy, and Bernie won’t get the media totally behind him now because he lost before, and despite the morons who “feel the Bern”, he is a crazy old Uncle who wants you to pull his finger.

Biden is trying to ride on Obama’s historic run, but Obama’s work has been exposed, and with it being dismantled by Trump, things are turning positive. Biden is going to push for a return to Obama’s terms, which is a hard sell after this economic boom.

Warren isn’t likeable. Bernie is more likeable, but comes off like a loon. Warren comes off as a shrill school marm.

The National Socialists will take over the party openly, it’s just dropping the mask they have worn for a long time.

I agree – Bernie ALWAYS was a joke. The only reason he got so far in 2016 was that a huge amount of the Democrat base hated Hillary as much as we did, and he was the only alternative.

People probably hated Hillary for different reasons, but she has a unique ability to make people from ALL sides of the political spectrum hate her.

People need to press Bernie, Warren and the other dems on how they will pay for their extravagant plans. When they reply, “tax the rich” demand specifics. They cannot give specifics without coming across as communists.

Warren has about as much Indian in her as any American who’s family’s been in the Americas this long. People with the same blood quantum get per cap all the time.

She has an economic populist program that can pull votes from Trump. If she goes hard on the border she will give him a run for his money. I doubt she will but it would be a big winner in the general.

Bernie doesn’t matter. He won’t be a factor in the 2020 election. There is no way the DNC will let someone who isn’t even a Democrat get the nomination. The whole point of control of the Oval Office is to keep The Swamp in place and humming along smoothly and profitably, for the benefit of all the Party faithful. Both parties supply cogs for that machine. Bernie isn’t a cog, he’s a fruitloop, and an outsider, not a nice standardized machine part with the rough edges worn off by years of faithful service moving up through the ranks of Party politics. So he’s useless as a major functional component of the control center for The Swamp. All this Primary maneuvering is just for show.

“The National Socialists will take over the party openly, it’s just dropping the mask they have worn for a long time.”

I think you’re closer than most. Trump will win in 2020. 2024 little hitler saluting David Hogg will come and seize power from the democratic socialists and call them National Socialists they are after all, a national party. Then he’ll start blaming the Jews for all the worlds ills. South Korea getting nuked, Iran getting nuked etc… lot of bad days to come. We’ll see how wrong or right I am.
