Fraternities and Sororities No Longer Allowed at Swarthmore College

“Fraternities and sororities will no longer exist at the College”

Some students at this school recently launched a hunger strike demanding this. Looks like they’re getting their way.

CBS News reports:

Swarthmore College will no longer allow fraternities and sororities

Fraternities and sororities will no longer be allowed at Swarthmore College following outrage over years-old documents allegedly written by one fraternity that contain derogatory comments about women and the LGBTQ community, and jokes about sexual assault.

“Fraternities and sororities will no longer exist at the College,” school President Valerie Smith announced Friday on the college’s website.

Swarthmore’s decision comes about a week after the only two fraternities at the private liberal arts college in suburban Philadelphia decided to disband following the internal documents’ release.

“The voluntary disbanding of Phi Psi and Delta Upsilon reflects a broader change in student needs and desires. Exclusive, dues-paying social organizations no longer effectively meet the needs of our residential liberal arts environment,” Smith wrote in her statement.

Smith said the school’s lone sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta, can continue with its current members through the spring 2022 semester but can’t recruit or initiate new members.

As opposed to “Exclusive, dues-paying social organizations” there will now be exclusive, minority card-carrying social organizations paid for with student fees. Progress!

Says who? I’ve never been a big fan of the greek system, but who cares if some students want to join a frat or sorority? Hell, there are Gay frats. A few protesters should not be directing University policy, nor should the student body. What’s next? What’s the next group to get the axe?

All this is doing is training an army of little busybody fascists who want to direct the society around them to conform with their notion of what ‘should be.’ Soon to be graduated, if they spend some time studying, away from protest de-jure, and in your community pulling the same crap.

Well eff that.

How is it up to Swarthmore to decide whether to close fraternities and sororities?

I’m not sure about Swarthmore, but at least some colleges, the frat houses are on the campus itself. So, they control the property.

As for frats and sororities themselves, I’ve no use for the, and never have.
