Florida Leads Nation in Higher Ed Rankings for Third Year in a Row

“Our state colleges and universities have prioritized affordability and pathways for career and life”

Nothing against Florida, but I never would have guessed this.

Florida Daily reports:

Florida Leads the Nation in Higher Ed Rankings for Third Year in a Row

For the third year in a row, Florida ranks as the top state in the nation for higher education, according to the U.S. News & World Report.

Florida placed second in both two-year graduation rate and tuition and fees. The Sunshine State ranked eighth in both four-year graduation rate and low debt at graduation. The one place where Florida lagged was in educational attainment though it still placed in the middle of the pack at 27th.

Gov. Ron DeSantis weighed in on the rankings on Tuesday.

“It is no surprise that U.S. News & World Report has again named Florida the top state in the nation for higher education,” said DeSantis. “Our state colleges and universities have prioritized affordability and pathways for career and life and, as a result, they are transforming our state. I look forward to celebrating continued success as we build on this positive momentum.”

The governor’s office showcased some of the recent higher ed efforts embraced in Tallahassee.

“The State University System recently announced a 9.5 percent five-year increase in graduation rates as well as a 31 percent year-over-year drop in the cost-to-the-student for a bachelor’s degree. Due to support from elected leaders as well as initiatives that drive down costs, the average State University System student pays $9,450 for a bachelor’s degree once financial aid is included. U.S. News & World Report also ranks five State University System institutions within the top 100 public universities nationally. Results are largely driven by the State University System’s Performance-Based Funding Model, implemented in 2014,” the governor’s office noted.

These numbers can be gamed fairly easily. Things are done to really “help” students graduate on time and drag them over the finish line. Some of these things wander firmly into ethical gray areas.

I’ve seen this regularly in my own state of VA.

So this is one of those “So aside from that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?” things.
