Dozens of caravan migrants breach border, frustrated by asylum entry process

Migrants angry at caravan organizers: “The people that brought us to this place, supposedly [caravan] leaders, took advantage of us, they used us in a horrific way…”

It appears the members of the caravan from Central America are growing increasingly frustrated by both the legal entry process and the immigration “organizers” who have herded them to the US-Mexico border.

To begin with, dozens of migrants who are disheartened by the slow pace of the formal asylum-seeking process breached the U.S.-Mexico border Monday by scaling a 10-foot metal fence.

They were observed using blankets and ropes to help climb over the structure separating California from Tijuana, where thousands of migrants have been gathering in recent days. Other migrants managed to squeeze through a section of the fence on the coastal city’s beach, according to Reuters.

Some migrants reportedly tried to escape capture by the U.S. Border Patrol, but most were caught. It remains unclear Tuesday how many of the migrants — if any at all — managed to escape detention.

Meanwhile, other members of the migrant caravan were on the move this weekend, but this time it was away from the border.

Hundreds of Central American migrants are settling into a new shelter further from the border. Officials say they were moved from a sports complex in Tijuana that was shut down because of sanitation issues.

The clean-up at the Benito Juarez Sports Complex continued Sunday after Mexican health officials shut down the makeshift camp.

Conditions deteriorated earlier in the week after heavy rainfall added to the already unsanitary conditions.

The government provided buses to shuttle migrants to a new, larger shelter located about 7 miles south of the Otay Mesa Port of Entry.

Officials say the location, El Barretal, is better equipped to handle the influx of thousands of Central Americans.

Some of those migrants are intending to relocate even farther from the US border…back home. Legal Insurrection readers will recall that a combination of US Border Patrol response, poor sanitation, and disease inspired 80 potential asylum seekers to return home.

That number has now jumped to 350, and many have directed their anger against the caravan organizers.

Around 350 members of the first migrant caravan who recently reached the northern border city have decided to voluntarily return to their home countries – Honduras, in most cases – in the face of having to wait for months for the opportunity to file a request for asylum in the United States.

Some migrants who spoke to the newspaper Milenio claim they were misled about their chances of gaining entry to the U.S.

“[Migrant advocacy group] Pueblos Sin Fronteras told us not to worry, that there was going to be transportation, that Mexico was going to open the gates so that we didn’t have to enter [the U.S.] illegally, via the river . . .” Honduran migrant Ulises López said, referring to the attempted border breach Sunday.

“What was offered to the caravan of Honduran migrants was a trap . . . The people that brought us to this place, supposedly [caravan] leaders, took advantage of us, they used us in a horrific way, what they did to us has no name,” he added.

“We came with enthusiasm . . . encouraging those who didn’t want to keep going . . . but when we got here our dreams went to hell.”

Meanwhile, the border crisis is killing the regional tourism industry.

Sunday, Nov. 25, seemed like the beginning of the end for Wes Barba, the owner and operator of Baja Border Tours. The San Diego-based small group tour company specializes in day trips to Mexico.

“It’s killing me. It’s really killing me,” West Barba said. “We go to Ensenada, Rosarito, and Tijuana, and the Guadalupe Valley for wine tasting.”

After the migrant caravan rush toward San Ysidro, Barba’s phones have been ringing off the hook with last-minute cancellations.

“They say ‘It’s going to be a problem coming back. Are we going to be in danger?’” Barba said.

Each day trip, Barba usually has ten clients. Not anymore. With more clients canceling daily, he has no choice but to cancel the trips altogether.

“10 customers to one customer. My profit went from $700 to zero a day,” Barba said.

In conclusion, this set of social justice antics has not only hurt regular Americans but the “migrants” the caravan organizers were supposed to be “helping”.

It’s the same, sad old story. People use people for their own selfish ends. And it will continue until we simply destroy the gradient that pulls people here like a magnet.

It would be so simple, and most of the components are already in place.

Captured detainees that are caught crossing illegally are deported post haste correct?

Observer in reply to healthguyfsu. | December 4, 2018 at 6:30 pm

No, nothing in our immigration system happens post haste. If they’re asserting asylum claims, they’re entitled to a hearing. Because of the thousands of illegal aliens who have been deliberately overwhelming our system for years now with bogus asylum claims, there is an enormous backlog, so hearing dates are set years in the future. Meanwhile, the claimants are set free inside the U.S., and cannot be deported until after their claims have been heard and denied.

I don’t know why the US would want to grant anyone asylum, which by definition is sought by criminals and debtors looking to escape the consequences of their actions. It would seem like asylum seekers could be denied, en masse, upon application and without a court hearing.

Your definition is obscure. So obscure I couldn’t find it.

Asylum in the US is codified, and you can read all about it in the citations you’ll find in the link above.

Many people have sought asylum in the US to save themselves from the terrors in their native country. Looking back at history, there should have been more…

          Then Merriam-Webster is obscure. 😉 https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/asylum #1

Out of curiosity, I read a little about Julian Assange – whose asylum has cost Equador $6M in 6 years. It’s shielded him from prosecution for Wikileaks, etc. and sexual assault charges (dropped).

MW says this of the type of asylum given to the needy:

Somewhat old-fashioned: an institution providing care and protection to needy individuals (such as the infirm or destitute) and especially the mentally ill.

          Do they have it backwards?

Ragspierre in reply to Ragspierre. | December 4, 2018 at 11:02 pm

You’re more correct if you use “sanctuary”, which was a tradition from religious institutions, NOT anything under US law.

So, yeah, you had it completely backwards.

Milhouse in reply to MrE. | December 4, 2018 at 10:26 pm

The US has to grant a hearing to anyone who is in the USA (no matter how s/he got here) and asks for asylum, and if s/he claims to have a credible fear of being harmed if made to go back then the US has to let him/her stay until the hearing. Why? Because that is what the law says. If you don’t like it, you have to change the law. But Congress won’t do that, especially with the Dems taking the house.

Claims to have credible fear? Rather than demonstrate that such a credible fear exists? Not what I’d been hearing all this time, but I’m not an expert in the field.

Ragspierre in reply to Milhouse. | December 5, 2018 at 8:33 am

You START the process of demonstrating a credible fear by making the claim.

That initiates the due process the law mandates.

Richard Grant in reply to Milhouse. | December 5, 2018 at 8:47 am

The Democrats need the Non-White votes to keep them in POWER.

They know that the VAST majority of Non-Whites will always vote by race.

Therefore, the Democrats want open borders and for everybody (who is not White) to be able to vote.

Milhouse in reply to Milhouse. | December 5, 2018 at 10:06 am

Claims to have credible fear? Rather than demonstrate that such a credible fear exists?

Demonstrates, but that requires some sort of neutral fact-finding, so merely claiming it gets them a foot in the door. And once released into the wild, they just disappear.

Richard Grant in reply to Observer. | December 5, 2018 at 8:45 am

And they go on “food stamps”, Medicaid (or better, just show up at any Emergency Rood and get FREE health care, where the bill is sent to you and me since we have jobs and can’t be thieves.)

They get housing assistance, free education for their illegal children……….

This country is about to EXPLODE……

Those who do not know Tijuana would be astounded at the cross border traffic. Tijuana is a hub of affordable dental and medical care at top notch clinics staffed with American trained doctors and Mexican trained nurses, which are excellent. It hosts huge outdoor furniture, gardening and such stores. Prescription drugs are far cheaper as is produce, Mexican and European liquor, perfumes etc. In fact many American families travel down there once a month to take advantage of the prices.
This is a huge blow to the economy.

buckeyeminuteman in reply to puhiawa. | December 5, 2018 at 7:03 am

Maybe if it hurts Mexico’s economy enough, they’ll beef up their southern border and keep the hordes out. I have sympathy for our economy that suffers from illegal immigration and is held hostage by Democrats. I have no sympathy for Mexico’s. They need their own border security.

We came with enthusiasm

Enthusiastic criminality is still criminality.

My heart goes out to all the distraught American liberals who thought that the caravan was a spontaneous assemblage of bona fide refugees seeking a better way of life in the greatest and most exceptional country in history.

Ask, WHY is this country more desirable than the Countries they are leaving?

Just WHAT makes America better, and it obviously IS better since that is why they want to come here, and not stay in the 20+ countries they are coming from?

Nobody seems to know why this country is superior. Nobody can seem to figure it out and I would imagine it would make a great PhD. dissertation, or book, or research project….WHY is America Superior to all other countries in this Hemisphere? WHY?

LoneStarWhacko | December 4, 2018 at 5:50 pm

This is a low intensity Maoist insurrection. Xi is taking his shot. Here’s the thing…..this ain’t fixin’ to stop. Even with a wall. There have to be serious physical consequences…..like getting shot or electrocuted. That’s where this is headed.

Wait a minute!

We are the richest country on Earth, right?

We built Boulder Dam and sent men to the Moon, right?

And we have a freaking 10 foot high metal fence?

For crying out loud!!

Was Home Depot out of 12 footers?

LOL

We also operate on the cheap, by aborting around one million Americans annually. Perhaps to make room for immigration reform and catastrophic anthropogenic immigration reform forced by social justice adventures.

Richard Grant in reply to n.n. | December 5, 2018 at 8:55 am

In the 60’s and 70’s, my generation of girls-women were told to NOT have babies…and if you did get pregnant, to kill it.

We were warned about “over-population” and fed absurd fiction books like “The Population Bomb”…..but, if I recall, this was never told to any of the countries south of us. My generation was brainwashed to exterminate our own children…….

Only America was told to STOP HAVING BABIES…..

Now, 40 years later, we are told we need more immigrants since our population is declining…..We are told we need to let in all the MILLIONS of children, not killed, from the countries South of us………the very same countries that we sent “Peace Corp” volunteers so they could INCREASE their birth rates with medications, health care, clean water, more crops…..but these very same Peace Corp Volunteer girls were told to kill their children…………

      Am I missing something?

“What was offered to the caravan of Honduran migrants was a trap . . . The people that brought us to this place, supposedly [caravan] leaders, took advantage of us, they used us in a horrific way, what they did to us has no name,”

Welcome to your Democrat Party. Promises you a feast of a lifetime, and gives you a shit sandwich. But then you knew they would…

Hey! OT!!!

It would be nice to be able to up/down vote people on our phones.

Not asking for it, because I’m sure there’s costs. Just saying….

Thank you, Prof, for the site!!!!

“In conclusion, this set of social justice antics has not only hurt regular Americans but the “migrants” the caravan organizers were supposed to be “helping”.”

When the Palestinians were first displaced no other Arab nation would take them in. Their political leadership found a festering wound of refugee camps to be better than a solution.

There are some real cynical bastards out there.

About illegal border crossings–you will continue to have them until you are willing to use lethal fire arms. American are too sentimental–or to be more accurate, stupid–so we have added how many million Democratic voters from across the borders.
The whole asylum business is a racket–asylum used to be limited to those suffering from GOVERNMENTAL persecution for religious or political reasons not because you felt unsafe or your pay is too low. On this basis millions of American in this country’s cities would be eligible–e.g., why don’t we ship a couple of million Chicagoans to Canada. Many of its citizens are as least subject to gang depredations as any one in Honduras.
And why has the media been so silent on the sponsors who fund the without borders crap?

They are NOT ”migrants”! They are a mercenary army trying to illegally invade a sovereign nation..
