Boston Globe Editorial Board: Elizabeth Warren a “divisive figure” who shouldn’t run for president

Elizabeth Warren’s failed strategy to take a DNA test to quiet coverage of her false claim to be Native American for employment purposes as a law professor, continues to reverberate.

Yesterday we posted about a NY Times article in which even Warren loyalists complained that Warren had severely damaged her presidential ambitions, Former Elizabeth Warren adviser: DNA test a “strategic failure” that was “depressing and unforgettable”.

It gets even worse, if that’s possible.

The Boston Globe has been exceedingly friendly to Warren over the years. It serves as her press shop, the place she has gone to at critical moments to try to deflate issues related to her Native American problem. Warren provided the Globe with exclusive access to family members and documents in 2012 and again in 2018. Indeed, it is no surprise that Warren rolled out her DNA test results through an article in The Globe.

So what the Globe Editorial Board just did has to be particularly devastating for Warren.

The Globe has come out with an Editorial all but demanding Warren not run for president:

Running for president is hard.

Deciding not to run? That can be even harder….

Warren missed her moment in 2016, and there’s reason to be skeptical of her prospective candidacy in 2020. While Warren won reelection, her margin of victory in November suggests there’s a ceiling on her popularity; Baker garnered more votes than she did in a state that is supposed to be a Democratic haven. Meanwhile, a September poll indicated that Massachusetts voters were more enthusiastic about [Deval] Patrick making a White House bid than Warren.

Those are warning signs from the voters who know her best. While Warren is an effective and impactful senator with an important voice nationally, she has become a divisive figure. A unifying voice is what the country needs now after the polarizing politics of Donald Trump.

Politicians who “explore” or “consider” presidential campaigns set in motion a machine that can be hard to stop. Patrick did, and that’s to his credit. There’s no shame in testing the waters and deciding to stay on the beach.

Warren can’t blame the “right-wing” for the Globe editorial. She brought this on herself, but not in the way most media is covering it.

Warren’s problem is not the DNA test. That was the symptom of the underlying problem.

Warren’s underlying problem is that she falsely claimed to be Native American to try to advance her career, and now refuses to accept responsibility for what she did. So much of what makes her “divisive” relates to that ethnic deception.

This issue is not going to go away if Warren runs for president. It’s only going to get worse.

Wow, if you’re lost the elitist and leftist Boston Globe…

It appears that Dancing with Facts (aka Big Chief Warren) might have to just fold her tee pee and head back to Harvard. At least her duplicity and fraud remains welcomed there.

Reading between the lines…there is no way that the Globe can spin the DNA test fiasco into a positive for Warren. Now that the “truth is out there”, it will be brought up constantly were she decide to run for POTUS. Thankfully for all of us, Warren is not a skilled politician. Being propped up by the liberal establishment for most of her career just makes her appear to be one.

Without the DNA test to provide cover Warren is just another old white woman, and not even one who was married to a President or served as Sec. State. The Dem Party wants to move on to another young, slick minority male – an Obama Lite if you will.

    down voted by accident, sorry.

Deval Patrick is not young but he is smooth/slick. Obama basically followed his play book and won the White House for 8 years but now Patrick has dropped out.

That leaves Booker or Harris fitting your criteria… yikes.

The timing of this piece is odd as many in MA were speculating that Patrick was asked to step aside to clear the path in this state for Warren. More likely Patrick resized that he simply likes making a lot of money far more than the ordeal of running for President.

If being “a divisive figure” is a disqualifier, I am having a difficult time finding any of the current Democrat “front-runners” who might be considered acceptable. Are they not all angry, bitter, hyper-partisan buffoons?

I’m pretty sure to the Globe, “A unifying voice is what the country needs now after the polarizing politics of Donald Trump….” simply means a person that will unify all of the anti-Trump folks. The democratic socialist majority, the old liberals of which there are fewer, and the Max Boot and Bill Kristol types that beg Republicans to vote for Dems just to spite Trump. You know, the people on the right who preach principle but really mean to keep power in the beltway.

Those can be unified with the right candidate. It has little to do with unifying the country.

Richard Grant in reply to casualobserver. | December 7, 2018 at 1:31 pm

All the Democrat Party has to do is nominate anybody who is NOT White, and they will unify their party.

They don’t know it yet, but that is their only chance due to the massive Demographic changes that have totally altered what use to be know as America.

When in a 3rd World, do as the 3rd World.

      Amerizuela anyone?

Milhouse in reply to IrateNate. | December 7, 2018 at 1:10 pm

They are all hyper-partisans and buffoons, but not all of them come across as angry or bitter. As the saying goes, the key to election is sincerity, so if you can fake that you’ve got it made. Some of the Dem potential contenders manage to project an air of sincerity and reasonableness, that can attract broad support from the public. Presidents Clinton and 0bama were both good at that. Warren isn’t.

Massinsanity in reply to IrateNate. | December 7, 2018 at 2:52 pm

What the Globe really wants to say but can’t is that Warren cannot win against Trump. The whole phony Native American thing doomed her from the start but it is finally sinking in among leftists that the DNA test, done with full support of the Globe, was a disaster from which she cannot recover. They now recognize that Trump will bludgeon her at every turn with it. Clear thinking people have known this since she first aspired to the Presidency but it has taken the events of the past few months for the Globe types to finally get it.

So she’s to divisive to be a POTUS, but OK to be a Senator.

Milhouse in reply to kellyj. | December 7, 2018 at 1:12 pm

Yes, that makes perfect sense. There’s no reason why a senator shouldn’t be divisive. It’s not her job to unite people. It is the president’s job.

Daiwa in reply to Milhouse. | December 7, 2018 at 1:28 pm

I don’t believe that’s in the job description, actually.

“… faithfully execute the Office of President… preserve, protect and defend the Constitution…”, etc.

Richard Grant in reply to Milhouse. | December 7, 2018 at 1:34 pm

Then why can’t the open-minded, all inclusive, diverse and tolerant Democrats UNITE with the Republicans?

Israel and Iran unite as one people? OK

Germany and France unite as one people? OK

Let us have India and Pakistan REUNITE as one people to show the world that a separate nation for Muslims and a separate nation for Hindi is WRONG, ok?

People should be forced to live together for their own good.

Unfair. Don’t let her Nordic blond hair, blue eyes and alabaster skin fool you. She is obviously Cherokee and so if it weren’t for affirmative action, she would be cleaning toilets.

Milhouse in reply to Pasadena Phil. | December 7, 2018 at 1:15 pm

That’s not true. Even if her Indian claim helped her land the Harvard job (which isn’t clear), it certainly did not help her through most of her career, because she didn’t invent it until she was already at Penn.

The way I read the story, she didn’t self-identify as Native American until after she was hired. But she change her official racial identity as Native American later for advancement and probably for grant money as well.

Anyway, the joke is that her DNA proves her to be 99.91% white. That’s as racially pure as you can get. Even the blackest of black people aren’t 100% black. Who could mistake her for anything else?

Milhouse in reply to Pasadena Phil. | December 7, 2018 at 4:07 pm

There is no such thing as “official racial identity” so she never changed it.

The facts as we know them are that for most of her career she told the truth. Shortly after Penn hired her away from Texas, she decided she was Indian, and had herself listed in a directory of “minority academics”. She didn’t specify which minority she was, but when asked orally she said Indian. She never made any other official statement to that effect. Some time after Harvard hired her they started trumping this alleged identity, until it became embarrassing for her and she withdrew it.

“…the polarizing politics of Donald Trump.”

Unlike Obama’s, right, dumbass Globe?

“…Baker garnered more votes than she did in a state that is supposed to be a Democratic haven.”

As with so many other pols in Massachusetts who sport an R after their names, Baker is no Republican.

ONLY a Democrat can PROVE they lied, with a DNA test, and then claim the test says EXACTLY the opposite of what it says…AND expect everyone to pretend they believe her!

Guess Paul Revere and the Raiders won’t be coming out of retirement now.

The Globe wrote:

Should have been:

There’s no shame in testing the waters and deciding to stay on the beach reservation.

she falsely claimed to be Native American to try to advance her career

She did more than try; she succeeded.

and now refuses to accept responsibility for what she did.

How would she do that (if, in some Bizarro universe, she wanted to)—resign her faculty position (currently an Emerita at Harvard Law)? Return 23 years’ salary? Put on a hair shirt and retire to a convent? Accepting a responsibility without accepting any real consequences is meaningless gesture-itis.

she falsely claimed to be Native American to try to advance her career

This may be true but there is no evidence of it. Harvard (the only school that hired her after she invented this claim) denies it, and there’s no way to prove it’s lying.

DouglasJBender | December 7, 2018 at 3:06 pm

Do I remember correctly that, when this whole Native American thing became public, someone asked Warren why Harvard would list her as “Native American”, and Warren replied that she had no idea?

You remember correctly. Of course the only possible reason is that she told them orally, but she tried to make out as if they’d just invented it out of the blue.

Dr. J. has gone on record from the get go on this one point when writing or being interviewed. And it is the point of the whole fake indian heritage of why it matters. Too sad that those who continue to cover the story as is the Globe can’t see the simplicity of this deceit. Voters see it as simple as “Fool me Once…….”

It is nice to see the Dem’s recognizing that phonies like Sen. Warren will get mocked mercilessly by Trump if they win the Dem nomination for president in 2020. Looking at the other Dem wannabes such as Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, Beto O’Rourke each have similar obvious flaws that Trump will immediately attack. The one Dem that may be more difficult to pick apart is Sen. Amy Klochubar from Minnesota. She works very hard to be sure she says nothing that’s controversial. She won reelection in November by a big margin in a state that’s not a lot different from Wisconsin in its demographics. The Dem’s might view her as a good candidate to go against Trump. Maybe hang onto Minnesota and swing Wisconsin (and maybe Michigan & PA) back to the Dem column.

MajorWood in reply to Mark Michael. | December 8, 2018 at 11:18 am

I don’t see the Dems ever nominating someone who isn’t from NY, IL, or CA. It is hard to ignote the flyover states if the POTUS is from one of them.

Did not know Trump had replaced Mick Mulvaney at that bogus CFPB Agency created by Liz Pocahontas Warren.

The Republican Senate for confirmed Kathy Kraninger, Trump’s pick to head the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, 50 to 49. The CFPB has been under acting management by OMB Director Mick Mulvaney. Ms Kraninger worked for him, she shares his view that this is a rogue Agency that needs more transparency and smarter rules for protecting Consumers.
