Liberals need to stop Voxsplaining Sarah Jeong’s racist tweets

Jeong isn’t woke or a victim

https://twitter.com/sarahjeong/status/547580215359459328

In the wake of the controversy surrounding New York Times hire Sarah Jeong, Vox writers busily composed articles defending Jeong’s racist rants.  Apparently, there’s a whole other “social justice” language that makes her racist tweets not only acceptable but not racist at all.

There was so much twisting of logic and SJW semantic gymnastics that Cal State sociology professor Bradley Campbell put together a nifty chart to help us understand the finer points of microagressions versus Orwellian SJW babble.

In one Vox article, Why Sarah Jeong’s tweets weren’t racist”:

To anyone who’s even passingly familiar with the way the social justice left talks, this is just clearly untrue. “White people” is a shorthand in these communities, one that’s used to capture the way that many whites still act in clueless and/or racist ways. It’s typically used satirically and hyperbolically to emphasize how white people continue to benefit (even unknowingly) from their skin color, or to point out the ways in which a power structure that favors white people continues to exist.

I get that white people who aren’t familiar might find this discomforting. Sullivan thinks it’s unacceptable on an “an open-forum website like Twitter.” But the reality is that Twitter is where these conversations between people of color are taking place, and (given the 280-character limit) it’s a lot easier to use the kind of “white people” shorthand rather than adding endless qualifications (“a certain kind of white person, definitely Not All White People,” is pretty lengthy).

What makes these quasi-satirical generalizations about “white people” different from actual racism is, yes, the underlying power structure in American society. There is no sense of threat associated with Jeong making a joke about how white people have dog-like opinions. But when white people have said the same about minorities, it has historically been a pretext for violence or justification for exclusionary politics.

. . . . This is, incidentally, why you hear a lot of people on the social left say there’s no such thing as “reverse racism.” We interpret language through social context. Because of the way racial power structures are set up, the same set of words mean very different things when you swap out “white people” for “black people,” “Asians,” “Jews,” etc. The phrase might be racist in one context, in the sense of conveying actual racial animus, but not in another.

In another Vox piece,

The same dynamic seems to me to be at play in the way “white people” is used in Jeong’s jokes. On social justice Twitter, the term means something closer to “the dominant power structure and culture” than it does to actual white people. To read “#CancelWhitePeople” and think Jeong is calling for genocide, as New York magazine’s Andrew Sullivan apparently does, is absurd. And to sit around wondering how the social justice left would respond if you completely changed the context, intent, and meaning of the tweets by subbing in the names of different groups, well, read Zack Beauchamp on that.

But after reading take after take after take on the latest round of our ongoing Twitter wars, I’m struck by how inexplicable both sides seem to the other. To much of the right, it’s obvious that Jeong’s tweets represented anti-white racism in its purest form; to much of the left, it’s obvious they were jokes that anyone with an iota of self-awareness could parse, and the affront taken at them is pure bad faith.

Jeong’s statement seemed, to me, to offer a much more persuasive middle road: These were satirical tweets framed in a way that could reasonably offend people who didn’t understand the context for what they were reading.

So let’s see how these “jokes” work by examining the context of Jeong on how “awful” white people are and how we “smell like wet dogs.”

If you’re still not doubled over with side-splitting laughter at these “jokes,” perhaps Campbell’s handy chart can help.

https://twitter.com/CampbellSocProf/status/1027958694657413120https://twitter.com/CampbellSocProf/status/1027958694657413120Essentially, then, the SJW crowd can say anything—no matter how offensive, divisive, hateful, and yes, racist—with impunity and a circling of woke SJW wagons around the “comedian.”

We saw this a lot with actual comedians like Jon Stewart and Bill Maher, but I guess anyone with a Twitter account and SJW cred can be just as hilarious as long as they are making their jokes about white people, Jews, and Christians.

We destroyed our rights in America to improve the lot of blacks. As a result of being forbidden to “discriminate,” we now are not permitted to take our own side in a fight.

When will we end this suicide pact? This insistence that we hate ourselves? When we will be restored to our freedoms?

I want to move somewhere where I can be free of the ceaseless criticisms.

They got equal rights. Now they want revenge.

I think MLK wanted equal rights. Leftists only want power to control and punish others. I do not think it is revenge as slavery seems to be well tolerated around the world today by these leftists. I may be wrong but I think past slavery is only an excuse as it is clear that racism is not an evil to a leftist whether KKK or SJW.

      Re: Humphrey’s Executor:

Sarah J. nor her ancestors were ever slaves to any American.

She has no basis to seek “revenge.” There’s something else going on here. Like…..people like her see an opportunity to jump on the anti-discrimination laws to advance their own agenda — which has nothing to do about blacks and everything to do about advancing their own power and advocacy of socialism.

Humphrey's Executor in reply to Close The Fed. | August 11, 2018 at 9:08 pm

Slavery, colonialism, whatever. “Social Justice” means nothing if not payback for wrongs, real or imagined.

Close The Fed in reply to Humphrey's Executor. | August 11, 2018 at 9:11 pm

Well, H.E., if the wrongs are imagined, which they are, then she’s a mental case, and why the hell is the NYT hiring a mental case? Carlos Slim that hard up for labor?

alaskabob in reply to Close The Fed. | August 11, 2018 at 9:48 pm

Asians did get a short end of the stick but overcame that…. now they are discriminated against in applying to college by the very Progressives that blurt out racists nonsense.

rdmdawg in reply to alaskabob. | August 11, 2018 at 10:35 pm

Please, explain what ‘short end of the stick’ ‘Asians’ got? I’ve never discriminated against an Asian in my life.

Indentured servitude building the “intercontinental railroad” and internment during WWII probably count.

Edward in reply to alaskabob. | August 12, 2018 at 7:25 am

rdmdawg – He’s speaking of country’s history of discrimination against Asians (primarily on what is now known as the Left Coast), which is appropriate where the particular topic of the moment is the past history of slavery. But you knew that.

Close The Fed in reply to alaskabob. | August 12, 2018 at 9:26 am

          Re: AlaskaBob:

Sarah J.’s parents came here after WWII. Therefore, HER ancestors suffered NOTHING from those things, so she has NO BASIS for any complaint.

Same with the Kenyan Obama. His father came here circa 1960. Too late for any complaints based upon historical anything connected with me or America.

If Sarah J. is unhappy the models look white (which they do less and less, unfortunately, due to too much legal and illegal immigration), then she should move to an ASIAN country, or accept the country she’s in. Those are the rational choices.

The thing is, SJW’s like her harm Asians. Her side causes discrimination against Asians in education, and forments violence against Asian businesses. This actually works against the protections of the Civil Rights acts.

      Revenge…???

What does Jeong have to avenge?

She’s objectively been one of the MOST privileged of people.

No. It isn’t about “revenge”. It isn’t about history. It is about the madness of the here and now. It is about pure racist dogma, and it cannot be expunged so long as anything “Western” exists. No objective facts; no reason; no value.

puhiawa in reply to Ragspierre. | August 12, 2018 at 2:32 pm

Rags, I would suggest her anger is directed at her parents, but projected onto their society. She was raised a conservative Christian in a household that readily intermingled with white Christian families. She has talked about her “rebellion” and it seems to resemble more seething anger than mere rebellion.

“They got equal rights. Now they want revenge.”
Funny, that’s just what happened in South Africa.

Who is “they”? Al Sharpton, an accepted leader of the Democratic party with lots of blood on his hands, attacks Asians as well as Jews. “Diversity” actually causes Asians to be discriminated against in favor of Whites (among others).

Sarah’s race, culture, and gender is “SJW” and nothing else. She is taking positions that harm Asians.

The Friendly Grizzly in reply to Close The Fed. | August 12, 2018 at 6:15 am

I wish I could give you more than one up-tick. The 1964 Civil Rights Act was bad enough as it stood. But, then, the courts started inventing things that were not in the Act, and the downslide steepened. The same thing with its evil twin, the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

…and these same people will scream racism at the top of their lungs during the upcoming SCOTUS hearings.

The Friendly Grizzly in reply to Andy. | August 12, 2018 at 6:17 am

Because screaming racism is all they have. I didn’t originate the idea, but, if someomn calls me racistt, my reply is “I won the argument.”

The SJW language sounds so very similar (except for the colors) to the Southern Democrats and their KKK language I heard many decades ago when I was young. None of us chose our race. That was God’s choice. Racism (judging a person based on his/her race) is evil. The twisted assertions of leftists, Democrats, and SJWs notwithstanding. Racism is an evil. Justifying racism is an evil.

It all makes sense to me! I don’t know what anyone is complaining about! Everyone has known for years that if you say “Urban” while white, it really means that you’re a racist blowing a dog whistle while talking about black people.

If you say Urban while black, that’s cool, that means you’re talking about black culture, duh.

Remember, it’s okay to say that only racists hear dog whistles.

It’s not okay to say that Democrats create and hear dog whistles. That’s a racist thing to say because the parties switched like 60 years ago.

DieJustAsHappy | August 11, 2018 at 9:03 pm

The thing about Jeong and her outrageous statements is that I may find them irritating, aggravating even, but in the more I’ll be over it. However, she’ll still be as ignorant as ever.

DouglasJBender | August 11, 2018 at 9:06 pm

What if you say “Urban” while being white and a country music fan?

Something that really sticks in my craw, is the entire shakedown industry against the airlines. We had 4 airliners and 3,000 people murdered… yet we REFUSE to allow the airlines to rationally profile passengers. When they rationally do, they get hit with fines, suits, penalties, and hellish news coverage.

Who the hell wants to fly the way it’s done today? It’s utterly unstylish, undignified and unAmerican. Advancing civilization used to mean that things would steadily improve. Instead, because of “anti-discrimination” laws, we’re treated more and more like cattle every year. Why should an AMERICAN have to be MOLESTED to get on a plane?

Our paradigm needs to return to dignity and progress.

And this includes our cities. They used to improve. Now, the downtowns look dirty, unkempt, impoverished. We need to return to American progress.

I agree with this very much. We’re all forced to ‘pay the price’ when political correctness overcomes common sense in our laws. Now we have 5 yr olds and catholic nuns being forced to endure a patting-down that resembles in every way a sexual assault. This is an unacceptable situation.

      Dear RmdDawg:

That’s what troubles me: it’s unacceptable, yet it’s accepted every day, and then doubled-down upon.

Personally, I have made one trip by air since 9/11. And after that, I said, “No more.”

One of those “illiterates” at NR, on why Jeong is just more of the same-ol-same-ole from the post-modern mill.

regulus arcturus | August 11, 2018 at 9:17 pm

Jeong is a textbook example of modern leftist totalitarianism.

It would have been shocking 20 years ago that Harvard Law would turn out a putrid ignoramus like this Jeong hussy.

Unfortunately, it is not shocking currently.

Good thing neither of those windbags is sincere. They’re just shoveling intellectual gobbledygook with both hands, hoping to toss the less perceptive but more honest liberals something they can hope is a life preserver.

I suspect they’re worried that they have a crisis on their hands, something which can only reinforce #WalkAway. Similar crises have happened to leftism before. At some point, sincere but confused people have to realize that they’ve been conned. When they finally notice that their clubhouse has filled up with blatantly racist and sexist monsters, some people—maybe too many—will just go home. These extraordinary “Hail Mary” excuses may be attempts to slow this hemorrhage of voters.

By all means, I hope they don’t stop. Please continue to point out the hypocrisy of SJW movements and thereby discredit the entire lot.

Ms. Jeong should understand that the ultimate result of “kill all men” is “kill all women”.

It’s how biology works.

Colonel Travis | August 11, 2018 at 11:02 pm

You will laugh at the jokes told by the Ministry of Humor.

Knock Knock.
Who’s there?
White racists who smell like dogs.
HAHAHAHAHA!

what this ignorant bigot seems to forget is that it was WHITE MEN who saved her sorry but from living under North Korean rules. She should thank GOD every day for white men. But she won’t because she is so blinded by leftist BS PCness that she has no capacity for actually though.

    n.n in reply to Sky2u. | August 12, 2018 at 1:20 am

Perhaps not her. Maybe her choice would have been different. Maybe the South Koreans, and the white men who aided them, were in fact oppressors and enemies. That notwithstanding, she indulges in diversity or color judgments, and paints all people of a certain skin color and all males with broad, sweeping strokes. She is a racist. She is a female chauvinist. She is a diversitist.

Pitiful Human Being;

Fouling the hearth/nest that White Civilization Bequeathed Her Kind.

Explain? Like directions on an on/off switch, there’s nothing to explain.

Jeong is racist scum, and a peer to the scum that hired her and defends her.

We had one obama and all the b.s. that surrounded the contrivance. Most voters will not be dumb enough to fall for similar loads of crap from the likes of Vox.

Oh, forgot: hillary klinton is the word’s smartest woman.

The first step to confronting the bigotry (i.e. sanctimonious hypocrisy) is to stop operating within their frame of reference. It is racism, it is chauvinism, it is diversity or color judgments. It was Hutu vs Tutsi. It was Mandela vs competing tribes (a la Fatah vs Hamas). It was Nazis vs Soviets vs the world. Don’t let them shackle and cage you with semantic games and emotional appeals. Principles matter.

(“a certain kind of white person, definitely Not All White People,” is pretty lengthy)

The single word that would suffice here (if one wants to argue with an idiot, which is always problematic) is “some.”

(And what’s with the Winnie-the-Pooh capitalization? They are mimicking Trump without even realizing it.)

What’s hilarious to me is that she can’t even get the axes on her graphs correct (I am a math teacher). I think she means that the more white you are, the worse you smell. The horizontal axis is the independent variable and the vertical is the dependent variable, which moves based on the independent. In this case the horizontal should be whiteness, since the level of smell is dependent on the amount of white. So the labels should be switched.

These people are ignoramuses in more ways than one.

Since she’s Korean and Koreans eat dogs, does this mean she thinks white people smell like dinner?

Vox, Salon, and the other top tier liberal sites are going to be working overtime trying to make excuses for the Sarah Jeongs and Brandon Ziobrowskis out there in the Twitterverse – because there are thousands of them who post this “kill whitey” junk every day.

Logical consistency is racist.

She also got her graph wrong. It implies that “weird dog smell when it rains” causes whiteness, since the independent variable is by convention listed on the horizontal axis.

[Insert Asian/Math joke here]

Gee, Zach and Ezra, thanks for “voxsplaining” how much more intelligent Ms. Jeong is than the rest of us in the “great unwashed.” It is so much more understandable now that you have done us this great favor. I will just pack my doctorate in a box and forget about it.

Sarcasm aside, methinks they are “‘splaining too much” (my apologies to Shakespeare and Ricky Ricardo).

Like I need another reason not to read the yellow journalism of the NYTimes. I hope Jeong doesn’t take offense…;-)

Close The Fed in reply to Dimsdale. | August 13, 2018 at 8:54 am

Dimsdale, I’m with you. All of this crap about the right being “toothless hillbillies”….. We’re an educated lot, yet they toss these insults out like they’re putting salt on mashed potatoes.

Isn’t coded language the sort of “dog whistle” the left always complains about? Funny how they are the only ones that seem to hear these “dog whistles.”

That said, I bet Jeong smells like patchouli and brie that has been sitting in the sun too long. But I wouldn’t point it out!

Creepy stuff.
