Faculty Groups at U. Wyoming Criticize Use of ‘Cowboy’ as ‘Sexist’

“sexist and promotes a white, heterosexual stereotype”

This argument might work for a school in New England, but Wyoming? Doesn’t a cowboy seem appropriate?

The Casper Star Tribune reports:

Faculty criticize use of cowboy in UW slogan as ‘sexist,’ ‘exclusive’

Faculty groups are criticizing a new University of Wyoming marketing campaign built around the image of a cowboy, saying its proposed slogan is sexist and promotes a white, heterosexual stereotype.

The slogan — “The World Needs More Cowboys” — is the product of a Boulder, Colorado-based marketing firm, Victor and Spoils, to which the university has already paid $500,000. The line initially gained the attention of faculty in the spring, when it was mentioned in a Faculty Senate meeting. It immediately drew criticism, faculty members said.

“I had lots of different reactions,” said Angela Jaime, the director of the American Indian Studies department. “I was really disappointed in the university for endorsing such a negative slogan.”

“I was kind of like, ‘Woah, has anyone else heard of this?’” said Christine Boggs, an instructor and the co-chair of the Committee on Women and People of Color at UW. The group sent a letter to university leaders to voice its “grave concerns” about the slogan and requesting that UW “shelve” it in favor of a more diverse tagline.

“Well the concern for me is the ‘boy’ part, right?” said Christine Porter, a UW professor and vocal opponent of the slogan. “Since the 1950s at least in other parts of the country, it is no longer acceptable … to use the generic masculine and pretend that includes the feminine.”

A university employs an instructor who begins her sentences with, “I was kind of like, woah…”

Christine Porter’s UW bio page: “I was born and raised on the east coast of the US. In my undergraduate studies I focused on race and gender studies in addition to my biology major.” Of course you did, you insufferable hack.

The U of Wyoming is reeling from huge budget rescissions. I wonder why they would pay half a mil to a PR firm, when their faculty haven’t had a pay increase in eight years.

Then the faculty go off on a Social Justice rant that will drive away students like it has at Missouri, Oberlin, Evergreen, etc. It’s time for people at UW to get their act together and concentrate on things that will help their school to survive.

Universities should kill all gender and ethnic studies.

If government guarantees of student loans ever go away, these departments will disappear overnight.

My family has had a ranch in Rosenberg Texas (30 miles west of Houston) since WW2. Semintal cattle and cotton. The majority of our “cowboys” have been Latino.

These “professors” are projecting their own racial stereotypes, they must hate white people.

So I’m reporting them to their University and recommending they undergo more diversity training. What the hell why not.

“Committee on Women and People of Color at UW.”

There it is again. UW marginalizing male albinos again. Sexist. Racist.
I’m not joking when I say they need more diversity training. Huge blind spots.

What a joke. That’s supposed to be an institution of education.

This is priceless: The employees of UW, each of whom must have actually applied for a job they actually wanted, are, instead of leaving for reasons of conscience, demanding political accommodation? LOL!

On the other hand, does this mean the lefty, anti-Americans will stop calling every conservative a “cowboy?”…kinda doubt it.

So … call ’em … “Cow_________” … insert personal pronoun of choice.

Bloody ridiculous.
