Evergreen State to Keep ‘Day of Absence’ of White People Event

Evergreen State to Keep ‘Day of Absence’ of White People Event

Tore campus apart a year ago, resulting in declining enrollment and budget cuts.

Last year, all hell broke loose on the campus of Evergreen State College in Washington state when Professor Bret Weinstein refused to participate in a campus event which would have barred white people from campus for one day. Now they’re at it again.

For refusing to go along last year, Weinstein was verbally attacked by angry students who demanded his firing. Things got so out of control that student activists were reportedly roaming campus with baseball bats. Weinstein sued the school and eventually settled for $500,000.

The entire crazy episode brought the school months of negative publicity. You would think they might have learned something from it, but it doesn’t appear so because they’re doing the same event this year.

Jennifer Kabbany reports at the College Fix:

No-whites-allowed ‘Day of Absence’ lives on despite last year’s uproar at Evergreen State College

Students at the embattled Evergreen State College, which made national headlines last year after it hosted an event that asked white people not to come on campus for a “Day of Absence,” have organized a new iteration of the controversial event despite administrators’ efforts to shift gears.

Students at the Olympia, Washington-based public school have organized a three-day “Day of Absence” observance that includes a mix of events on and off campus. Some gatherings are advertised as open to all skin colors and others ask that only POC, or People of Color, attend.

A poster hung at the school obtained by The College Fix declares that the no-whites-allowed self-segregation events will be held off campus. It asks people to RSVP at a website that spells out “No Nazis Allowed” in its URL.

The events launch today and run through Friday, according to organizers, who are not interested in media coverage of their event, according to a Facebook screenshot obtained by The College Fix.

A spokesman for Evergreen State College did not respond to a phone call and email from The College Fix on Tuesday seeking comment.

The theme of this year’s observance is “Deinstitutionalize/Decolonize.”

In the age of the looming higher ed bubble, some schools deserve to fail. Especially those which refuse to learn from experience. At Evergreen State, the writing is on the wall. Adam Sabes reports at Campus Reform:

Plummeting enrollment prompts $6M budget cut at Evergreen State

Evergreen State College has announced that it is planning to cut $5.9 million from its budget in an effort to offset a rapidly declining enrollment rate.

The cuts were outlined by President George Bridges in a May 8 memo to the Board of Trustees, and are accompanied by plans to raise various student fees by hundreds of dollars, The Olympian reported last week.

The announcement comes nearly a year after the college was rattled by riots following former professor Bret Weinstein’s decision to question the school’s “day of absence,” which involved asking white students to leave the grounds for a day of off-campus programming while students of color participated in on-campus workshops…

According to a report released by an “Independent External Review Panel” in April, the college is expecting a decline in applications for the Fall 2018 semester of up to 20 percent, compounding the 4.5 percent decrease in Fall 2017, compared to Fall 2016.

“Further declines in applications (possibly by as much as 20%) and enrollments are expected for the Fall of 2018 based on current year-to-year data,” the report noted. “This condition, and the revenue shortfall it will create, will present Evergreen with significant financial challenges that will not be short-lived.”

Evergreen State College seems determined to self-destruct.

We should let them do it.

It will go off without a hitch because no one else there has cojones like Weinstein to stand up against bigotry.

People will still vote with their feet, though.

Diversity. Color judgments in lieu of character judgments.

If that isn’t institutional racism, I dunno what is…

Exactly how is that legal under federal law? Change the prohibited group to anything other than white or male, what would happen?

Federal laws may in theory apply to all, but you know and I know that for a generation they are not enforced against anyone but White and Asian males.

I noticed that one of the main events is held in the “Red Square”. How fitting.

The theme is “Deinstitutionalize”. These snowflakes in their safe spaces seem pretty institutionalized to me. Isn’t that what institutionalized means; feeling comfortable being locked away from the real world?

If you exclude white people one day out of the year then they will start voluntarily excluding themselves the rest of the year. Then they will complain about “white flight”.

I was in 7th grade when they started busing in poorly motivated students, students who were crude, bullies who accosted students in the bathroom and demanded all their money.

9th thru 11th grade was tolerable because the screw ups were in general ed, while I was in college prep. I was in college prep because I loved learning.

The summer after 11th grade my grandfather, father and I built a new house far outside the city, and moved in in time to start 12th grade in a suburban school.

We did not bail out of the city because of people’s race, we bailed because of the way they acted. School age children allowed to run the streets into early morning seven days a week, theft, vandalism, being roughed up going to and from school. Neighbor’s kids throwing their garbage across their driveway, over the cyclone fence under our weeping willow tree. They also walked the top the fence, mashing it down. My parents lost over a decade worth of equity, transferred to those overrunning and destroying the neighborhood. Before those people arrived the neighborhood was a nice post WW2 middle class neighborhood. Fifty plus years later the whole city is a ghetto, varying only in degrees of ghettoness. Today, that cancer is spreading into suburban areas, and I am about to move much further from the city.
I am all for anyone improving themselves, achieving and prospering. I am really tired of those who do little or nothing demanding the good life at everyone’s expense. It is time that society demands that people earn their way, regardless of race.
If these people want to self segregate, when we should help them along in all aspect of society.

10 years ago the White People in my neighborhood to a Day of Absence. Which turned into a week and then months and then they never returned.

It didn’t have a happy ending.

Want to teach that the White race is superior? Simple – mark them, along with Asians, as the only ones strong enough to shrug off discrimination like this.

Every time you add ankle weights to the sprinter, you signal that he is so much better than the others that he needs to be handicapped just to keep it sporting.

This is more liberal lunacy, nothing more. It is possible to ascribe rational motives to minority members, as denigrating the majority is generally seen as a means of increasing the power of minorities. However, for members of the majority to do the same thing is simply insane.

Throughout history, every successful society has relied upon the members of that society to adopt the principles of the dominant society. That is because societal mores are both the glue which holds individuals together, by giving them a common, shared identity, and the lubricant which allows people within the society to interact, peacefully. If one steps outside the boundaries of societal mores, one becomes an outlaw.

What has happened on university and college campuses is that these institutions have created their own, separate societies. All within the institution must conform to the mores of these mini-societies or face ostracism, banishment or physical attack. That these mini-societies are not compatible with the main society, in which they exist, is ignored by those within them. It is delusional. This is insanity. And, the insane can not be reasoned with.

From Title VI of the 1964 civil rights act: “If a recipient of federal assistance is found to have discriminated and voluntary compliance cannot be achieved, the federal agency providing the assistance should either initiate fund termination proceedings or refer the matter to the Department of Justice for appropriate legal action. Aggrieved individuals may file administrative complaints with the federal agency that provides funds to a recipient, or the individuals may file suit for appropriate relief in federal court.”

Evergreen college is a private institution, but no doubt receives federal assistance in some form; at the very least, federal student loans courtesy of salliemae, etc.

The admins at this systemically racist indictrination camp need to be fired, fined, or imprisoned.

What part of Evergreen STATE College do you not understand? Evergreen is a PUBLIC school!

Evergreen State is a public university, which means it’s SWJ administration is paid by the State of Washington. I have already written to my senator and representative requesting that funding for an obviously racist institution be halted pending investigation and possible replacement of the President.

Of course I never hear back.

While this event every bit as racist it appears that mobs of hate-filled students armed with baseball bats will not be performing a ‘white purge’ as happened last year. Still, Washington State should not condone such bigotry, let alone fund it.

Yeah but it’s Jay Inslee not Scoop Jackson or Dixie Ray!

To be fair, it’s not like the White Purge was advertised ahead of time last year, either. I don’t think you can draw a conclusion one way or the other. Yet.

Last fifty years: “Integrate!”
Next fifty years: “Segregate!”

It is a competition between ESU and Portland Community College to see who can out-stupid the other one. I’d rather my child go to Greendale, or even (gasp) Oberlin.

Evergreen’s annual “Day of Racism.”

Because nothing says, “Send your child here for a great education” like telling him he’s not welcome because his skin is the wrong color today.

I just read through the Washington Examiner article on Weinstein. I feel sorry for the protestors because apparently no one ever taught them the wisdom of not shitting where you eat. My impression is that everyone was floating on the Obummer pink cloud when the shift in the college’s direction was implemented, and 11/2016 still hasn’t sunk in. ESU got off cheap with a $500K buyout.

What does it say about the intellectual rigor of this university that none of the instructors can fathom why this is wrong?

Would you pay through the nose for an auto mechanic who knows less about engines than your do?

Then why would anyone pay 6 figures to be educated by professors who can’t work out why this is racist and discriminatory?

If the point is to “decolonize,” then shouldn’t everyone (whites, Mexicans, Asians, muslims, etc.) who isn’t native American be forced to absent themselves?

    02sbxstr in reply to Observer. | May 17, 2018 at 4:47 pm

Are not native Americans also immigrants. Did not they come across the land bridge between Asia and Alaska. They may have been here longer, but they are no more native than I am, arriving from England in the early 1600’s. Just saying.

Evergreen should change its name to EverRED. And if a day of absence is good, wouldn’t it be even better if white people and their money just remained absent from the place forever?

Very sensible.

If the school eliminates this blatantly racist event, it will have riots.

If it doesn’t eliminate it, it won’t have riots. It will most likely continue its slide into insolvency, but that’s a longer-range problem. Riots are more immediate.

As usual, the short-term solution will be the one adopted.
