Debt-Laden Never-Trumper Evan McMullin Might Have a Campaign Finance McProblem

Debt-Laden Never-Trumper Evan McMullin Might Have a Campaign Finance McProblem

You shouldn’t throw stones in a glass house.

The Daily Caller News Foundation has discovered that failed independent presidential candidate Evan McMullin may be violating campaign finance laws.

The holier-than-thou candidate’s campaign ended in a boatload of debt and it appears he “has missed every deadline to file the required financial statements since then.”

Almost a year ago to today, Fuzzy blogged about McMullin’s financial problems. The Salt Lake City Tribune noted that he still owed $670,000 to vendors, which could cause a problem for him if he ever wanted to run for office again.

It looks like those money problems have not gone away and may be worsening.

From The Daily Caller:

McMullin’s committee was nearly $645,000 in debt just after the 2016 presidential election, according to a financial statement the group filed to the FEC in December 2016. By July 2017, it increased to nearly $670,000, that month’s filing shows.

That was the last financial statement McMullin’s committee filed. Since then, the organization has missed three deadlines, including one that passed Sunday. The FEC has consequently sent the group warnings that it could face penalties if it doesn’t provide the necessary information.

“It has come to the attention of the Federal Election Commission that you may have failed to file the above referenced report of receipts and disbursements or failed to file a report covering the entire reporting period as required by the Federal Election Campaign Act,” reads a February letter from the FEC.

“The failure to timely file this report may result in civil money penalties, suspension of matching funds payments, an audit or legal enforcement action,” the letter continues. “The civil money penalty calculation for late reports does not include a grace period and begins on the day following the due date for the report.”

McMullin’s campaign received four letters from the FEC before the February letter. The commission wanted to know “why it submitted amended versions of its financial statements with increased debt.” A letter in March 2017 about the filings from September 2016 noted that the forms included “an increase in debts owed to one or more vendor(s) totaling $339,389.57.”

This is how McMullin’s campaign responded in April 2017:

The committee was “immediately confronted with the difficulties of acquiring vendors, recruiting volunteers, raising money, obtaining ballot access, and organizing for the election which was a mere 85 days away” after it was formed, the group’s treasurer, Jeffrey Carson, wrote in a letter to the FEC. “Given these circumstances, there was a lack of organization in the initial committee structural and vendor acquisition phase.”

“Unfortunately, this led to outstanding vendor invoices being unreported as debts owed by the committee,” Carson continued. “Once the committee was structurally sound, the committee’s outstanding invoices were discovered” and it “amended its past FEC reports.”

“The committee has since taken measures to adopt and implement organizational best practices which should prevent errors like this from occurring in the future,” he concludes. However, the committee only filed one additional financial statement following the treasurer’s letter.

Like I said, since the election, McMullin has maintained his holier-than-thou attitude on social media, even bashing Trump for his debt.

Look at the time stamp. McMullin was swimming in his own massive debt when he typed those words.

As much as I would like to participate in the wonderful feeling of schadenfreude for this well-deserved pest, I’m going to take the advice of my mother who said, “If you can’t say anything nice about somebody, say nothing at all.”

So in that line of thought, “…”

There. I feel better.

McMullin was a Potemkin candidate whose only goal was to elect Hillary Clinton. And he stiffed all those backers who made the foolish mistake of trusting him to pay back the money he’d borrowed.

The best possible outcome would be if Egghead gets sanctioned for campaign finance violations, and his backers end up losing every penny they loaned to him. It would teach them a good lesson about credit risk.

But we can still ask questions.

I want to know if he took lessons in doing that from Hillary and the DNC.

OTOH, my mother is a miserable person, and therefore i can cheerfully ignore any admonitions she may have given me about enjoying schadenfreude…

IMHO, Egg McMuffin deserves every bit of payback coming his way, as all the #NeverTrump traitors do.

it is difficult, nigh unto impossible, to describe the level of hatred for self and country that would lead a person to want to have Shrillery the FAB, be President.

the only other possible motivation i can discern would be that they thought her time in office would be their turn at the corruption trough.

either way, they are beneath contempt.

YMMV.

It would be nigh on impossible for a #NeverTrumper to be a traitor since Trump has never stood for anything besides himself. There is simply no leader and no principle to betray.

Given that, you people throw around the epithet ‘traitor’ in the most causal manner. In the process, you cheapen it to the point of making it meaningless.

Dammit, Ms. Chastain, I had already forgotten this guy.

1) anyone who objectively is working for the establishment of the Socialist paradise is exempt from all laws and it will be so ruled once Democrats are formally back in power.

2) as far as any holdover debt, if Eggs McMuffin should run again to draw votes away from anyone to the right of Trotsky; you can be sure that Leftist donors [probably from Silicon Valley] will cover his old debts and fund his new campaign.

IIRC McMuffin was the NRO’s last hope of stopping Trump and electing Empress Hillary. So why doesn’t NRO step up and make his debt good?

Ragspierre in reply to Bucky Barkingham. | April 18, 2018 at 4:31 pm

You’re delusional. Post a link to any NRO piece supporting McMullin.

Other than this one by Jonah?

“McMullin Scenario a Last-Ditch Hope for Dismayed Voters”

Consider independent write-in candidate for president Evan McMullin. He has virtually no chance of winning the election on November 8, but he does have a shot at being chosen as our next president.

It’s a long shot. Very long. But if McMullin managed the greatest upset of all time, it would be a very good thing, and not just because so many of us would rather see someone other than Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump in the White House.

McMullin, whom I’ve met several times, is an earnest, patriotic, and brave man who spent nearly a decade serving his country undercover in the CIA. He was until recently the chief policy director of the House Republican Conference. He would not be my first choice for president under normal circumstances. But that horse long ago left the barn — and then got hit by a truck.

      ………….

Personally, I wouldn’t mind if the Electoral College rejected them both and just picked McMullin as a matter of conscience.

So. One think-piece by Goldberg is now NRO’s endorsement of McMullin as the road to electing Hellary?

    Yeeeeep. Delusional.

Barry in reply to Ragspierre. | April 19, 2018 at 2:22 pm

“Post a link to any NRO piece supporting McMullin”

Now, it’s post more than one link?

You said “post a link…”, singular.

Ragspierre in reply to Barry. | April 19, 2018 at 6:32 pm

“IIRC McMuffin was the NRO’s last hope of stopping Trump and electing Empress Hillary.IIRC McMuffin was the NRO’s last hope of stopping Trump and electing Empress Hillary.”

ONE think-piece by Goldberg is NOT “NRO”, you lying sack of shit.

He does NOT suggest “electing” Hellary. Ever.

murkyv in reply to Ragspierre. | April 19, 2018 at 8:25 pm

You just keep moving the bar.

Like always, so you can claim victory.

Barry in reply to Ragspierre. | April 19, 2018 at 9:29 pm

You poor pathetic lying bullshit artist.

NRO, the nevertrump publication was near 100%* trying to elect shrillary. As you were.

*Hanson was an exception, maybe there was another.

As usual, you ask for something, get it, and then close your eyes.

Ragspierre in reply to Ragspierre. | April 20, 2018 at 11:02 am

As always, you just lie. There was no NRO endorsement of McMullin.

There was no effort to see Hellary elected.

Does his organization even still exist? I mean, with those kind of finances, he isn’t going to be paying anyone to file reports with the FEC. Maybe he should announce his candidacy for 2020. That should bring the donations rolling in and erase this annoying debt thingy right away!

This candidacy was a thoroughly ridiculous effort. I still can’t believe that anyone in American politics, no matter how vicious or destructive or delusional, would also be stupid enough to bother with such a quixotic campaign. Yet it happened.

This is the second big thing I really don’t understand about the last election. (The first is why Hillary canceled her triumphant fireworks extravaganza right when she was on—as she thought—the verge of ultimate conquest … not like her at all.)

YellowGrifterInChief | April 18, 2018 at 7:00 pm

You people do know that someone near and dear to your hearts who was also a candidate for President in a recent election has a history of stiffing creditors. He has been known to tell small businessmen that it will be a fruitless exercise to sue him because it will cost more in fees than the creditor will win.

This comment is serious and factual. Those of you who have been paying close attention know this. So why are you making sport of McMullin when there is a much bigger fish whom you celebrate?

Calling you hypocrites does not do justice to your lack of ethics and morality. Heal thyself.

“has a history of stiffing creditors”

You are a liar. Trump, nor any other builder, will pay subcontractors that don’t deliver. It happens frequently.

YellowGrifterInChief in reply to Barry. | April 18, 2018 at 11:20 pm

OK, I am a liar. Feel better now?

Milhouse in reply to Barry. | April 19, 2018 at 4:54 am

He’s telling the exact truth, as hundreds of Trump’s victims can and have testified. He told them openly to their faces that they could whistle for their money; they could either take what he felt like paying or run up the legal bills suing him. We need “loser pays” in this country.

Barry in reply to Milhouse. | April 19, 2018 at 2:27 pm

Post the “testimony”, not the unverified whining of subcontractors.

You will not because you cannot. And I’m quite familiar with subcontractors not doing what they contracted to do. It happens frequently. Go ask any builder in the 10 million plus range.

Ragspierre in reply to Milhouse. | April 21, 2018 at 8:46 am

Back to those Polish workers, despite Trump’s boasts about his record with lawsuits and how he never settles, he had to pay out a tidy sum.

Trump paid $1.375 million to settle the case, with $500,000 going to a union benefits fund and the rest covering lawyers’ fees and expenses. The case was settled in 1998.

This was backbreaking work, and by the accounts of those on the job, the Polish workers were frightened illegal immigrants, unaware of their rights, and often the butt of jokes by the union workers who were getting paid much more for the work they were doing.

It’s just one more piece to the puzzle that is Donald Trump.

For those who haven’t yet, I do recommend checking out the BBC documentary, “Meet the Trumps” on Netflix. It covers a lot of the background that went into making a Donald Trump, and none of these salacious tales come as a surprise, once you hear how the man was raised.

That’s ONE story. They are legion, you poor lying, T-rump worshiping idiot.
