President Donald Trump’s longtime personal assistant John McEntee has left the White House and will join the president’s 2020 re-election campaign.

The Wall Street Journal reported the White House fired him over security issues. Other reports indicate the firing happened because he is under investigation for serious financial crimes.

Officials escorted McEntee out of the White House on Tuesday and did not allow him to collect his belongings. WSJ wrote that the aide “indicated to colleagues that it was an issue in his background.”

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly implemented “a stricter security-clearance policy” when he took over the role. Kelly said last summer that “he realized a large number of staffers still held interim clearances after more than seven months in the administration.”

He discovered “at least 35 officials” who “inappropriately” received top secret clearance.

Other reports indicate an investigation by the Department of Homeland Security “for serious financial crimes” that “are not related to the President”  led to McEntee’s firing.

The firing came moments after The Washington Post broke the news that Trump fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. He nominated CIA Director Mike Pompeo to take over the role. It also comes after communications director Hope Hicks and economic advisor Gary Cohn left their posts.

McEntee joined Trump’s campaign in 2015 and remained a strong figure next to the president. He was one of the president’s longest serving aides and the entire family loves him. He made sure Trump was prepared when he met with people, delivered messages to the president in the residence portion of the White House.

An official told WSJ that his firing is “not going to be great for morale.”

They won’t be completely without him. McEntee will remain in Washington to work on Trump’s re-election campaign for 2020 along with former Trump spokeswoman Katrina Pierson. From Business Insider:

The Trump campaign released a statement soon after McEntee’s firing from the White House announcing that McEntee will join its ranks, serving as a “senior advisor for campaign operations.”

“As we build out our operations for the 2018 mid-term elections and the 2020 reelection campaign, we are pleased to welcome back two outstanding members of our 2016 team,” campaign manager Brad Parscale said in a statement. “We need the help of proven leaders such as Katrina and John to promote the President’s growing portfolio of achievements across the country.”

““not going to be great for morale.”

I don’t see how this could be bad for morale. He’s being investigated for serious financial crimes and yet he was allowed to softly land as a “senior advisor for campaign operations.”

this makes no sense – if he is a crook, why keep him on 2020 ?

maybe i’m just slow on the uptake –
rags would certainly think that of me.

OTH Pompeo as SecState is a master move.

Stories coming out this afternoon that Tillerson was actively trying to sabotage Trump’s Iran policies because he didn’t like them. If so, that justifies the fast firing.

My big complaint about Tillerson was that, like most international oil executives, he was real cozy with the Arabs and the Iranians, and had no use for Israel at all, seeing the Jewish state as little more than an annoying distraction. He reportedly hated the Jerusalem decision, precisely because it annoyed his Arab and Iranian friends.

    so, good riddance.

I am reminded of the Secret Service agent in the Clinton administration who wrote his tell-all book (names carefully redacted) about all of the staffers who came sweeping into the office with Bill and Hill with long lists of disqualifying security violations including drug possession. Compare that with George W, who had each staffer pre-vetted by private security before submitting them to the USSS for almost zero clearance rejections.

Seems to be a mix of the two here.

Serious financial crimes? I don’t understand. He has only had two jobs in his life, and both were ordinary salaried positions. The worse he could have done is get a house loan by a misstatement or some such.

I’m guessing that as the president’s long-time aide, the dude knows too much. It would not be beneficial for Trump to leave him high and dry.

I strongly suspect that Kelly was the one who insisted on giving him the boot out of the White House – after the Porter affair, he’s not going to allow anything that even has a whiff of scandal around.

But Trump clearly still likes the guy, which is why he got the immediate job offer. From an entity that Kelly has nothing to do with.

Of course DT loved the guy. He brought him KFC and McDonalds every day.

I don’t know if McEntee is guilty or not, but I am certain that if Trump is going to fire anybody that’s merely “under investigation” then Mueller is going to “investigate” everybody surrounding Trump. Not because he thinks they’re really guilty, but to see how many people he can strip away from Trump.

The Trump administration is doing a bit of housekeeping in preparation for 2020. Trump needs to get more done and hopefully some serious swamp draining.

Mystery explained. He is a compulsive gambler.

DHS investigetes financial crimes???
News to me.
