U. Chicago Students Demand Mandatory ‘Diversity and Inclusion’ Requirement

“We encourage you to take a look at our demands”

Maybe conservative students should start demanding things like mandatory firearms training. Do you think the left would like that?

Campus Reform reports:

Chicago students demand ‘diversity and inclusion’ grad requirement

A University of Chicago student group has issued a series of more than 50 demands, which include calls for a mandatory “Diversity and Inclusion” graduation requirement.

UChicago United, the group behind the demands, describes itself as “a coalition of multicultural student organizations formed to make the University of Chicago campus more inclusive for students of marginalized backgrounds and identities,” according to its Facebook page.

The group claims that the university “has consistently failed to meet the needs of its marginalized students,” and is thus “taking action to build accessible campus resources and measures of accountability to support the creation of an environment that minority students are able to lay claim to as their own.”

The group has been heavily involved in protesting a professor’s decision to invite Steve Bannon to campus, saying it is “currently engaged in a campaign to make UChicago a truly anti-racist, inclusive campus.”

“We encourage you to take a look at our demands,” the group’s post concludes, directing readers to a petition and encouraging them to sign.

In total, 51 demands are listed within the petition and endorsed by seven student organizations that are insisting the university establish a “Diversity and Inclusion” graduation requirement. The requirement would start with the class of 2022 and be primarily focused on “US-centric structural oppression, such as race, gender, and sexuality.”

Suggested response by UChicago administration to these demands:

“No. Now get back to class or find another institution to infest.”

Well, the assumption as always is that the university hasn’t been deliberately encouraging and cosseting these little rebels the whole time.

But if the university wanted to put a stop to this, a simple policy of instantly de-recognizing any student organization that makes any public demands of the university would do it. It’s a general rule that only recognized student clubs can use university facilities and resources.

Nothing says inclusion like forcing people to bend to your will.

I teach at the University of Chicago. Trust me: this will never happen. We have one of the very best and strongest free-speech and free-expression codes in America. We have a faculty that thoroughly believes that the best way to understand something is to debate, talk, read, and think.

And we don’t have any “marginalized” students on our campus.

The young people doing this will shortly get back to work. Mid-terms are coming, and if they don’t do well come September they’ll be explaining to Mummzy and Daddsy why they’ve transferred to the local state university.

I’m a UofC grad, and this made me laugh. Knowing the faculty there, I’d say they are mildly amused at the idea of student “demands.” The UofC is far more interested in the quality of thought and research.
The SDS takeover of the administration building circa 1968 came to a bad end, with the students sheepishly abandoning their sit-in after a few weeks while the University ran on around them. They were thereafter expelled or suspended.

any student who “demands” anything other than a good education should be told to collect their things and leave.
