#SchumerShutdown After-Assessment: Democrats have boxed themselves in on DACA

#SchumerShutdown After-Assessment: Democrats have boxed themselves in on DACA

DACA has become so central to Democrat Party unity that a “bad” deal, which may be the only deal available, could incite the far-left base.

Glad I was in the car much of the day, while all the theatrics were going on with unshutting down the government, which never really had been shut to begin with.

The overwhelming after-assessment among the punditry is that Schumer was humiliated, had little to show for either the fight or the capitulation, and that Trump won. I think that assessment is generally correct.

But it ain’t over until it’s over, and it’s not over. We are going to be back for another continuing funding resolution in three weeks.

It’s not to late for Democrats to snatch some measure of victory from this clear defeat, if by raising the centrality of DACA they manage to get more from Trump in the next go-round than expected.

That could come in the form of a path to citizenship for DACA recipients, or some broader immigration reform that grants amnesty to however many millions or tens of millions of people are in the country illegally. That is what every single Democrat wants, and plenty of Republicans like Lindsey Graham. It will be up to the House leadership and Senators like Tom Cotton to make sure that doesn’t happen in Congress.

More deeply, the Democratic Party is split between the pragmatists and the base. The base is furious at what just happened, they feel betrayed, and they want to fight. A reporter for the Washington Examiner tweeted today:

I was at Netroots Nation in August. My biggest takeaway from the conference was that people underestimate how far Left the base has tacked …. Relevant today.

This base has representatives in the Senate; after all, 16 Democrats voted No on the funding bill, including likely 2020 presidential candidates Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker, Kirsten Gillibrand, and Kamala Harris. They are the future of the Democratic Party, at least through 2020, and they represent the far left base. They know that’s where the energy in the party is, where the activist foot soldiers are, and where the social media dominance resides.

In the House, 144 Democrats voted No, a majority of the Democrat caucus.

DACA has become so central to the Democratic base that it risks fracturing the party unless Schumer and others get some substantial concession from Trump. If they don’t, and Democrats accept a water-down DACA deal that doesn’t create a million new citizens, plus preserve chain migration so that million becomes several million, the Democrat base will flip out.

Trump could fracture the Democrat Party by permitting DACA recipients to stay in the country — something he has said he wants to allow — but insisting on such other terms and limitations as to present Democrats in Congress with an impossible choice between no DACA deal and a “bad” DACA deal.

That assumes, of course, that Trump holds the line. If Trump does hold the line, the result could be a Democrat Party torn apart with recriminations.

Comments

This whole thing has some pretty big parallels to how they handled Gorsuch.

Their base didn’t want ANY compromise at all, despite Gorsuch’s career being completely beyond any kind of logical opposition. Rhetoric by Democrats in Congress got bigger and bigger, and they seemed to talk themselves into being convinced that Republican’s wouldn’t actually do what they said they were going to do (nuclear option). At the end they accomplished literally nothing but allowing the Republicans to remove the nuclear option in the most favorable situation possible.

You see exactly the same thing here. Democrats seem to be slowly believing their own bullshit rhetoric about DACA and convincing themselves that Republicans are just going to cave.

That’s looking less and less likely after this laughably shutdown BS by them. They must have gotten a whif of the polls telling them what everybody already knew – that this little theatre of theirs was NOT popular outside their lunatic base.

The EVIL Democrat Party is already “voting” millions and millions of dead people, felons, illegals, and having “voters” bused around on election day to vote multiple times!

Only One Solution! ALL Illegals get DEPORTED!

At most, the GOPe can tell the Evil Dems we’ll give some “preference”to the illegal law breakers who are going to be deported – if the want to apply for imigration.

I would recommend they have to document zero offences committed (yes even zero misdemeanors) and pass a 4 to 5 full days of testing. Testing on English proficiency, knowledge in detail of U.S. history, and also the U.S. Constitution, live demonstrations of skills (such as electrician, plumbing, etc.) if claimed.

Hey then it’ll be just like it always used to be for legal immigrants to obtain citizenship before the evil Uni-Party Trolls started selling their influence for illegal Trillions of Dollars of BRIBES!

FBI Shadow Figure Surfaces To Protect President Obama Amid Released FBI Text Messages…

      https://theconservativetreehouse.com/2018/01/22/fbi-shadow-figure-surfaces-to-protect-president-obama-amid-released-fbi-text-messages/

I like the idea of testing those who want to become citizens. by the way, statistics show that LEGAL immigrants often do better than citizens, including conservatives. So what do we do with citizens who’re ignorant of basic US history and civics. As Pres. John Adams wrote, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”

Most liberals either are unfamiliar with the constitution, don’t support it as written, or reject it altogether. They take an eiesegetical approach to interpretation, thus a “living constitution.” It could mean whatever a politician or activist judges thinks it means. For example, liberal appellate judges have clearly rejected the Constitution and US laws on the authority the president has to control immigration.

Sadly, all too many conservatives also disregard what US laws state, whether it’s about immigration of Muslims, what religions are allowed, freedom of speech, the operation of congress, or treason. Then there’re the Dominionists who also have an animus towards the Constitution.

So I often suggest that people go to Hillsdale College’s site and take their free online Constitution and other civics courses.

Narrowly define “dreamer”; give them green cards; end chain migration; end the lottery; mandate e-verify; and build the wall. I’ll even throw in two paths to citizenship: (1) return to their country of origin and enter the US legally or (2) serve three years in the military and get their citizenship upon their honorable discharge.

    Re: NavyHBS

    1.Narrowly define “dreamer”

This would be limiting ONLY to those who have filed applications to be on DACA which is about 800,000.

    2. give them green cards;

No to green cards. No to eventual citizenship and NO to more welfare. Create a new DACA card, which they can renew every 3 years. Go on welfare, DACA people have to leave. No citizenship.

    3. end chain migration;

    Of course.

    4. end the lottery;

    Of course.

    5. mandate e-verify;

    of course.

    6. and build the wall.

All 2,000 miles, even if there’s a river.

    7. two paths to citizenship:

    (1) return to their country of origin and enter the US legally — No, there’s a line, and they’ll just demand they can cut the line.

or (2) serve three years in the military and get their citizenship upon their honorable discharge.

NO. That cuts legal Americans from slots in the military. Why would we give a slot that is an entry level job to American high school grads? So we can kick sand in their faces, just for the hell of it?!?!

How about #8: requiring ‘dreamers’ to pass a citizenship test so they know they’re Americans, and appreciate why?

94Corvette in reply to Close The Fed. | January 23, 2018 at 6:32 am

      Two thoughts –
1 – Not only require that they have registered but also that they have renewed their registration and have paid all required fees.
2 – I wouldn’t want anyone who is a lawbreaker in the military. Obama did all he could to destroy the esprit de corps the military enjoys and to inject those who have so vocally voiced their hatred for the US into the services would be detrimental.

Regarding E-Verify – I’d like to see it expanded to more than employment. What about housing? Or medical care? Try to rent an apartment and E-verify says you’re not here legally, sorry – no apartment. Go to an emergency room or urgent care, we will treat you, but you’ve been flagged. This happens in other “civilized” countries, and this is one area where we should follow suit.

    tom_swift in reply to navyhbs. | January 23, 2018 at 12:27 am

two paths to citizenship: (1) return to their country of origin and enter the US legally or (2) serve three years in the military and get their citizenship upon their honorable discharge.

    Absolutely not.

Game Theory 101. When you’re winning, don’t act like you’re losing.

Citizenship is not a viable option. It’s defeat, a clear win for the forces which are trying to turn the great American experiment into just another third-world shithole. [I can write that now that it’s official, and even on prime-time TV, right?]

Legal residence for foreign invaders we can tolerate, in the right circumstances. But the D’rats can’t, and won’t. They need voters—for them, nothing less will do. But there’s no good reason to give them what they want.

Nice analysis.

…a “bad” deal, which may be the only deal available, could incite the far-left base.

I love the smell of Dimocrat discord in the morning!

I’m no fan of Schumer – if I was alone with him I would be checking out security cam arcs while looking for a very big rock, but…

… his instincts were right.

This was a no-win scenario for the Democrats. I wanted them to stay in the Trap longer. Schumer realized they needed to get out of this as quickly as possible no matter what the cost.

He was right. His Marxist base was not.

Oh thanks Mitch for making mewling sounds that led Schumer out of the Trap. It’s only because you seem so agreeable to compromise that Schumer backed away from the fire.

Why you are allowed to comment here is a mystery.

Why you are such a coward that that’s all you’ll ever do is perfectly clear.

Rag, antifa? what the hell are you talking about? Although thanks for ironically following that up with an authoritarian fascist call to limit who can exercise their freedom of speech here.

You spent the entire morning passive-aggressively downvoting everyone you hate until it you’d swelled enough vodka to muster the courage to actually post… and this is what we get?

How sad, even for the Sally Struthers School of Law.

Oh I see now, Rag. You’re not educated on the use of metaphor. And this case I’m using it to amplify the praise I’m giving Schumer, ie I have no love for him I am not a fan and so my praise for his actions carry more weight.

No no that won’t do. I need smaller words…

I would not limit your right to fantasize about killing people or their children, only your ability to use my venue to do it, you toxic coward.

You should feel free to do it in whatever forum your filth can find. If the Prof. suffers you, so be it.

BTW, you need to stop torturing the language. “Slave” does not mean someone who comes here at the risk of their lives, albeit illegally, and who (according to your stupid bullshit) actually votes.

“Passive aggressive”, likewise, is not remotely akin to your misuse of the term.

Phuc you, very much, you cowardly little AntiFa.

I use the term slave to denote welfare dependency.

And you know exactly what I mean by the term. You are just deliberately mischaracterizing it because you are deceitful dishonest and without any intellectual integrity.

I look forward to witnessing your continual devolution.

No. NObody “knows” what you mean when you grossly misuse terms. Again, you’re simply delusional, and a nutter.

I find you very like the AntiFA, with your hate, victim-hood fixation, and your violent fantasies against both property (the plate glass windows of an offending Radio Shack), the children of your objects of hate, and individual people. All from behind the mask you wear here. The sole difference I see is some rightist (NEVER conservative) tribal affiliation.

Yet you want me to agree with your arrogant assumption I’m on the far right? How so? Do you even comprehend what the alt-right is?

What do you mean by alt-right? Is it someone who’s a conservative constitutionalist? Is it someone who is a conservative Christian? Is it someone who is a Republican? Is it someone who voted against the corrupt socialist traitor Hillary, you know, those Bible and gun owning deplorables?

Is it someone who believes that as a sovereign nation the US has a right and DUTY to protect its borders and the rights of its citizens? Is it believing controlling legal immigration and stopping illegal immigration is essential to national survival?

Is it someone who believe in cogent comments and civil discourse? Is it pointing out that you have a penchant for calling others coward due to your inability to engage in civil discourse?

Yes, I’m guilty of all of those. You see, I’m a fundamentalist Christian and conservative constitutionalist. The latter is a 17th-19th century CLASSICAL liberal. I’m also a Heinz 57 Hispanic. I hope that doesn’t offend your sensitivities.

Remember: McConnell is NOT on our side. Nor is Ryan.

We really are a third party (Tea Party, Trump Party), sometimes allied with the GOPe — most times, not. The great irony is that the GOPe has NO BASE of voters: WE keep putting these backstabbing losers back in office!

We keep talking about this like it’s a game. It’s not.

This is about our way of life and our freedom, something untold number of Americans have died to protect, and something these fake oath-takers on the left (and in the GOPe) and their enablers are seeking to destroy.

Hows’ this for perspective:

In the early 1990’s, a ticker tape parade was held in NYC for returning Iraw War troops. No gunshots, no bombs, not car rammings, no ‘Womnen’s March’ interrupting it, no code pink, nor more importantly: no gunshots, no bombs, no car rammings.

Given the psychos the left and the GOPe have seen to have come into the country, can you imagine a ticker tape parade occurring now in NYC?

Societal collapse happens fast.

As a side note, sleazeball and fake oath-taker Schumer was instrumental in preventing a recent ticker tape parade in NYC for returning vets:

http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2017/12/28/anchor-baby-population-in-u-s-exceeds-one-year-of-american-births/

A new Congressional Budget Office (CBO) report reveals the booming number of U.S.-born children to illegal aliens who are given automatic citizenship, forever anchoring their families in the U.S.

Agreed. It’s a thriving business in several places in the country – it should be illegal, but just take away the ridiculous concept that someone who is not a citizen can birth a citizen just because they are here, and the business will go away on its own.

… but insisting on such other terms and limitations as to present Democrats in Congress with an impossible choice between no DACA deal and a “bad” DACA deal.

Of course. Very straightforward. Very simple—so simple not even the Republicans in Congress can screw it up. And, most important of all, very obvious … so obvious that it’s been clear for months now. So obvious that it’s shocking that the D’rats are dumb enough to fall for it. Charlie Brown and Lucy’s football … over … and over … and over.

Trump tosses chopped fish to the trained seals. And the seals, without fail, jump for the bait. He’s been doing this for two years now, first with the press, now with the D’rats as well. The beauty of it is that they can’t help themselves; they’ll dive for the bait, even if some of them are smart enough to realize that it’s poisoned.

But of course all the President has to say is that he’s open to a “deal” on Dreamers, and the wailing and gnashing of teeth begins. Betrayal, surrender, gloom and doom. And the neverTrumpettes chortle that they were “right all along” about, errr, something-or-other.

However, to Trump, a “deal” does not mean any old bad deal which happens to come along. Representative government is all about deals, but too much of American history is the result of crummy deals. Have the intelligence and stamina to hold out for a good deal, and things will be different. This should be bloody obvious, but huge swathes of hammerheads just can’t grasp it. And the D’rats don’t seem to grasp it even now. They really seem to think that the President will swallow any old crap plan they offer; then when he demurs, they’ll whine about how difficult he is to negotiate with. Well, of course; he continues to prove that he knows how to deal, and they don’t.

But of course he’s just a narcissistic buffoon with funny hair, so those terribly clever Progressives will be able to run rings around him … or they will, as soon as they get the votes, preferably uneducated and basically anti-American votes … which should happen any day now … right?

Tom, your last point is interesting to me because today the Marxist left is calling Schumer more of an idiot than Trump, simply because Trump outplayed him.

If they continue to hold that Trump is a moron, they’re going to discover more and more of their leaders are dumber than a bag of rocks as they continually lose to Trump.

More popcorn please.

Remember, Fen: the marxist left is a MINORITY in this country, and only has the power they do because of the capitulation of the GOPe.

They’re like the Wizard of Oz, having the curtain pulled away. I believe that two short years ago, we would’ve caved before the shutdown even started, and granting the Democrats everything they were demanding and more. I am really hoping the straight up and down vote on the DACA illegals dies in the senate on the 8th of February. I really can’t see what I imagine could make it out of the senate passing in the house. I really can’t see the senate passing anything. Mid-terms are around the corner and I think even the GOPe know they are all done for if they screw the pooch on DACA illegal amnesty. They will not be forgiven. No path to citizenship, Wall, Border security, immigration enforcement and elimination of sanctuary cities are just some of the bare minimums and I can’t see the Dems swallowing that. The senate is going to have to go Nuclear.

Can someone explain to me the negative consequences of McConnell going nuclear?

Because so far the way I read the situation is:

” I’m sorry sir but we can’t operate to save your life because 61% of the surgeons don’t agree with the procedure. Now, this other study says only 51% need to approve, which we have, but we won’t go by that study because…”

What is it going to take for our elected representatives to wake up and realize we are at freaking War out here?

Paul In Sweden in reply to Fen. | January 23, 2018 at 3:52 am

The negative consequences of going Nuclear in the senate are that prim and proper GOPe that would rather lose than put their policy forward might be compared with Democrats like Harry Reid. It is much better for some to kowtow to the Dems than grow a backbone and take the lashing from the MSM like Trump does during every hour of every day.

I’ll disagree on this Nuclear Option in this instance. I *wanted* the Democrats out dangling in the wind on this SchumerShutdown for Illegal Aliens. Great harm was being done to their party, meanwhile, nobody even noticed that the federal government had been “shutdown”.

I was quite disappointed when I learned that it ended yesterday.

“What is it going to take for our elected representatives to wake up and realize we are at freaking War out here?…”

    Forget that!

First, the democrats are leftists seeking to destroy the Constitutional Republic. (You think pelosi, schumer, soros, jane fonda and their ilk care about the country? You think they have any real idea why they do what they’re doing?)

Second, you think the pathologically corrupt cowards of the GOPe are going to become honest patriots, instead of marketing our country to any buyer, like they’re some hillary klinton? (The GOPe, btw, is smarter than klinton: she got greedy and she pathetically came to believe her own press. McConnell and Ryan know their place, and are content to quietly ride their gravy train to our demise.)

Forget it! We’ve got to get rid of them, and replace them with honest patriots who will abide by their oath of office.

Remember: the GOPe has NO BASE except us. How we let any of these rats win an election is a titanic embarrassment to all of us.

As we’re cleaning up this mess in our Federal government, it would help to note that only one Republican voted against confirming Paul Ryan as speaker in the House, Thomas Massie from some Kentucky district.

Who owns Mitch McConnell?

According to Schumer and the Democrats the average everyday American worker/taxpayer is deplorable while illegal aliens are “dreamers”. This entire shutdown clearly demonstrated how the issues around 800,000 illegal aliens are of far greater importance than the salaries and well being of hundreds of millions taxpayers how the needs of American citizens are secondary to the needs of a handful of illegal aliens. They have shown us how national security, border security, and so forth are unimportant while allowing the unfettered access of foreigners into America is of major importance.

This shutdown has defined the position of the Democrat party and it is a very ugly position. Is it any wonder why the Democrat party is imploding as we speak and why the independent voter, and even many lifelong Democrats view the Democrat party as corrupt, no longer representing American values, and are therefore abandoning them? And to think this is all a pregame warm up for the real show will start when the antics of Hillary Clinton, the FBI, the DNC and so many others come to light. When this happens, not only will the corruption and possibly even treasonous actions of many leaders in the democrat party become known, but those in the Democrat party who vigorously defended the Clinton’s and others will become contaminated as well. Given these actions, the Democrat party may not exist in a few more years.

Hey Fine, you dont need to convince me. In fact I may have written some of the paragraphs that you’re quoting at me. 😉

Clear fields of fire to ya.

All I want to know is why Senator Patty Murray looks like she just realized it was a one night stand and what kind of mind altering pills did DiFi just consume????

Seriously! Don’t Dems realize what a picture this is, with that deadpan, or dead, expression right over Schumer’s shoulder? She could try to look interested.

Simply pass the Goodlatte bill and send it to the senate with clear instructions: If you add ANY pathway to citizenship, we will kill it when it comes back and so-called “dreamers” will be deported under existing law.

I think that super strategist Schumer thought that with his base, the media and the usually stupid, wishy/washy GOP he just might pull off a shutdown and have it blamed on the Republicans. He, like so many other old pols simply don’t realize that many/most on the right pay no attention to the MSM.

Just my POV.

Millions of people migrating in an annual exodus is an abnormal condition that is evidence of a need for emigration reform. As well as an assessment of conditions (e.g. Planned Parenthood) at the destination that create a sufficient vacuum to justify its progression.

Lost in all of this is what the people these politicians represent want. It seems that the vast majority of Americans want some sort of amnesty for the Dreamers but coupled with provisions to ensure there are no future Dreamers, to stop illegal immigration, and so forth. The much smaller far left Democrat base wants dreamers made legal immediately with no strings attached, a more open border, more benefits to illegal aliens, and so forth. This democrat “base” is made up of extreme left socialists, Californians, the dead and absent who vote in overwhelming numbers, illegal aliens, and so forth. It’s nice to know how the Democrat party is being driven further and further left by these dead voters, illegal aliens and such.

Very good points. In addition, the Socialist Democrats want world government starting with US acceptance of foreign law in our court system. But I wish they’d look at some of Mexico’s former laws. Here’s some about immigration in Mexico.

    1. If you legally migrate here, must speak the language.

    2. Must be a professional or an investor. No unskilled workers allowed.

    3. No special bilingual programs in schools, no special election ballots, all govt business conducted in our language.

    4. Won’t have right to vote no matter how long here.

    5. Can’t to hold political office.

    6. Won’t be burden to taxpayers. No welfare, food stamps, health care, or other govt assistance programs.

    7. Can invest here, but must amount to 40,000X daily minimum wage.

    8. If you want to buy land, OK, but will be restricted. No waterfront property. That’s reserved for citizens naturally born here.

    9. Can’t protest; no demonstrations, waving foreign flag, political organizing, or bad-mouthing president or his policies, if you do you’ll be deported.

    10. If you come here illegally, you’ll be hunted down & sent to jail.

The #SchumerShutdown became the #SchumerSurrender. I also heard it called the #ChuckieChoke.
