Republicans demand declassification of “deeply troubling” report on Obama DOJ/FBI Russia collusion investigation

Could this be the end of Mueller’s investigation?

A memo compiled by the House Intelligence Committee has several Republican Congressmen rattled. Thursday afternoon, lawmakers began demanding declassification of key points of a FISA Memo which they say “raise serious questions about the upper echelon of the Obama DOJ and Comey FBI” in the Russia/collusion investigation.

Rep. DeSantis (R-FL) tweeted:

Now, several lawmakers are demanding the key points of the memo be made public:

Rep. Gaetz (R-FL) urgently suggested the House quickly move to disclose the findings of the report:

Because the report is classified, there’s very little information available about its specific content, but here’s a bit of background provided by Rep. Gaetz in an official statement Thursday:

In December, Rep. Gaetz questioned Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein in the House Judiciary Committee hearing about the clear examples of bias and conflicts of interest at the Department of Justice (DOJ), and within Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team of investigators. In his questions, Rep. Gaetz asked when the DOJ learned that Associate Deputy Attorney General Bruce J. Ohr had contacted Christopher Steele, former British spy and author of the infamous ‘Trump dossier,’ a document called “salacious and unverified” by former FBI Director James Comey.

Additionally, Rep. Gaetz asked when the DOJ discovered that Mr. Ohr’s wife, Nellie, was employed by Fusion GPS, the company that sponsored the creation and distribution of the dossier. Mr. Rosenstein said that he could not answer Rep. Gaetz’s questions, but that documents would be turned over to the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence — even though the Judiciary Committee, not the Intelligence Committee, has oversight authority over the DOJ.

Earlier in December, Rep. Gaetz questioned FBI Director Christopher Wray about former Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe’s statement that the FBI investigation into Hillary Clinton’s misuse of a personal email server was “referred to as ‘special’” and that “the decision was made to investigate it at HQ with a small team.”

In November, Reps. Gaetz, Gohmert, and Biggs, all members of the Judiciary Committee, sent a letter to Director Wray, asking for an investigation to be launched into the FBI’s treatment of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during their e-mail investigation. On December 6th, Congressman Gaetz, alongside Congressmen Jim Jordan (OH-04), Mark Meadows (NC-11), Scott Perry (PA-04), Jody Hice (GA-10), and Andy Biggs (AZ-05), held a press conference calling for an investigation into the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) system and procedures that allow special treatment and bias to take place, in order to prevent “special” treatment from happening again.

Thursday night, the House Intelligence Committee passed a motion along party lines making the memo available to lawmakers outside of the committee.

From Sara Carter:

Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., offered the motion on Thursday to make the Republican majority-authored report available to the members.

“The document shows a troubling course of conduct and we need to make the document available, so the public can see it,” said a senior government official, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the document. “Once the public sees it, we can hold the people involved accountable in a number of ways.”
The government official said that after reading the document “some of these people should no longer be in the government.”

The document also apparently outlines “several problematic” issues with how FISA warrants were “packaged, and used” state several sources with knowledge of the report.

Over the past year, whistleblowers in the law enforcement and intelligence community have revealed to Congress what they believe to be extensive abuse with regard to FISA surveillance, as previously reported.

The dossier was used in part as evidence for a warrant to surveil members of the Trump campaign, according to a story published this month. Former British spy Christopher Steele, who compiled the dossier in 2016, was hired by embattled research firm Fusion GPS. The firm’s founder is Glenn Simpson, a former Wall Street Journal reporter who has already testified before Congress in relation to the dossier. In October, The Washington Post revealed for the first time that it was the Hillary Clinton campaign and the DNC that financed Fusion GPS.

Congressional members are hopeful that the classified information will be declassified and released to the public.

“We probably will get this stuff released by the end of the month,” stated a congressional member, who asked not to be named.

But the government official, who viewed the document said “it will be tough for a lot of people to see this and especially the media, which has been attempting to deemphasize the dossier. It’s going to punch a hole in their collusion narrative.”

The House vote to make the report available to all members is a major step in exposing the long-guarded classified documents obtained by the House Intelligence Committee over the past year. It allows members of the House to view the report and could quickly lead to a motion to declassify the report for the public, numerous House members told this reporter.

The entire left will try to suppress the memo if it’s released, but it won’t work. All Republicans have to do is start basing really painful policy/legislation on the contents therein, and the left will be FORCED to cover it.

For example, imagine a headline: “February, 2018: Trump orders appointment of a special prosecutor to investigate Robert Mueller…FOR NO REASON AT ALL.”

(Or maybe they leave off the last part, but imply it)
That won’t pass the smell test even for progressives. Nobody does inflammatory things for no reason at all. Therefore, the media will have to cover the reason. There’s no way for them to escape it.

      Currently breaking on that….

Dan Bongino – Take it to the bank, the FBI/FISA docs are devastating for the Dems. The whole image of a benevolent Barack Obama they’ve disingenuously tried to portray is about to be destroyed. The real Obama, the vengeful narcissist, is going to be exposed for all to see.

Sebastian Gorka DrG – My sources tell me tonight that the “nuclear” memo is just the beginning.

By the end of it all, the tapping of candidate @realDonaldTrump’s phone will be the least of the Left’s problems.

“As of now, key Republicans are pushing to have this smoking gun, nay, still-flaming howitzer,
        released to the public while
the Democrats, many of whom being part of this “investigation” can be considered co-conspirators in the coverup if not the actual crime, are desperately trying to keep it secret.”

        http://acecomments.mu.nu/?post=373439

Democrats leak things illegally all the time and nobody blinks an eye. But republicans can’t release this because it is against Congressional rules?

Obviously, Mueller will try to indict anyone who releases it but hopefully Mueller will be indicted in the near future.

We don’t know exactly what is in the report but …

Is this something that Russian collusion investigator Mueller knows … and did he followup with one of those “side investigations” (i.e. Flynn,Manafort side business) to bring it to justice … or did his avoid it due to conflict-of-interest ?

      Matt_SE in reply to Neo. | January 19, 2018 at 9:36 am

Congress is full of back-benchers who are suddenly all squawking about the memo. Either this is one of the very few times GOP leadership got the cats all herded into one direction (unlikely), or there’s something really, really damaging in it.

Dependson on the contents and what actions that content leads to, if the Memo is released by the end of the month it will take until at least March for any investigations to begin. Those investigation will still be running at least into September. Then any charges or actions will probably run into next year.

Not unless this report is released. Which is why the dems are fighting it. What scares me – are there any repubs fighting release as well.

They could pull a Feinstein and just leak it…but then the Media would resort to its usual trick and focus on the outrage of the leak rather than the information itself…but then again, the media will never cover the information if that info counters their narrative, so I guess it doesn’t matter what they do.

My thoughts exactly. Maybe somebody on the committee has a headcold.

Milhouse in reply to Dr. Ransom. | January 19, 2018 at 8:54 am

Feinstein didn’t leak anything. She released the transcript, which she had every legal right to do. It was impolite of her to do it without consulting Grassley, and she apologized to him for the discourtesy, but she broke no law. This report, however, is classified, so it would be illegal to release it without a vote by either the House or Senate Intelligence Committees, and then giving the president five days to veto it, which can be overridden by the full House or Senate, depending on which Intelligence Committee wanted to release it.

MarkSmith in reply to Milhouse. | January 19, 2018 at 10:56 am

Not sure if “Legal Right” is the right term to use. She had an obligation to protect the process and she abused it. She should be dumped from the committee for her bonehead actions.

      Something to think about:

“An attorney for Fusion GPS, a research firm made up of several ex-Wall Street Journal reporters including Mr. Simpson, said last week that reporters should be “skeptical in the extreme” about Mr. Grassley and Mr. Graham’s referral.”

Feinstein didn’t leak anything. She released the transcript, which she had every legal right to do.

Ah yes, your special dictionary again.

“Leak” does not imply a crime; it means giving somebody some information they usually wouldn’t receive, and that usually (though not necessarily) implies a violation of a confidence. No crime necessary, and no crime implied.

So she definitely did leak the transcript.

        Milhouse in reply to tom_swift. | January 19, 2018 at 2:10 pm

Wrong. First of all, leaks are by definition secret. Openly publishing something is not leaking it.

Second, “leak” definitely implies illegal; hence “the president can’t leak”. If the president reveals something, openly or secretly, it’s not leaking, because it’s lawful.

You’re always so unfailingly obnoxious and condescending in your tone. It’s irritating and infantile as hell. I can only imagine how tedious it must be for you to post comments on this website, correcting everyone, as your conclusions must always be unassailably correct, while everyone else’s suppositions are quite obviously always wrong. Not once have I ever seen you concede even a scintilla of validity as to someone else’s point. Yoh show no humility, ever. And, what you perpetually display isn’t an amazing intellect, but, rather, a childish ego and an unhealthy desire to believe that you’re always “right.”

Why bother? Surely, it must take a physical toll on you.

Barry in reply to Milhouse. | January 19, 2018 at 3:41 pm

There’s nothing “obnoxious and condescending” about that statement of fact.

Just because you don’t like it doesn’t make it illegal.

          Gunstar1 in reply to Milhouse. | January 19, 2018 at 4:02 pm

Leak does mean secret, but it does not mean any law was broken or that to be secret it means classified. An owner of a business cant leak company secrets because he is the one who has the authority to release it. An employee who leaks a secret could have broke a contract or rule or just someone’s trust, but absolutly no illegal act need to have occurred for it to be a leak.

On twitter and other social media, Comey has gone dark – Hillary has gone dark – Obama has gone dark….

They are hunkering down, and everyone who has seen the report says it is worse than we ever imagined.

The FBI, for one, is going to be totally discredited, and it is going to take many years and a complete turnover of their senior staff before that even begins to happen.

guyjones in reply to C. Lashown. | January 19, 2018 at 2:09 pm

Fair point. Now, as entertaining as this thread has been to read, I must take my leave and excuse myself. I ate a rather large lunch, earlier, and am now feeling the impending urge to head to the Men’s Room and purge my bowels by taking a massive Obama.

That story that the DOJ/FBI knowingly (told to stop) violated the terms of FISA for 3 & 1/2 years up till Sept 2016, when they admitted it to the FISA court, didn’t seem to rattle anybody.

What concerns me more:
What will happen to the people involved?
Nixon was forced to retire. Haldeman, Erlichman, Colson served tiome in jail ( as did lesser characters ).

I feel there have to be consequences, but with people out of power …?

Also, I am thinking of Flynn. There is Manafort, who seems to be holding his won ATM, so really Flynn is the person most effected. Remember this is the guy who started the whole “lock her up” at the convention. I suppose it is better then committing suicide by shooting yourself in the back of the head twice, but still. Was he set up because of what he did?

There is a reason that every movie where great wrongs are perpetrated always end when the misdeeds are uncovered.
It’s because there never is real justice.

I always remember the movie, Capricorn I, where a bunch of NASA officials fake a trip to Mars because the lowest bidder on the environmental system, delivered a system that would fail, killing the astronauts. The movie ends when Charles Brubaker (James Brolin) runs into the cemetery where is funeral is being held.

We never get to see anybody go to jail.

American Human in reply to RodFC. | January 19, 2018 at 9:47 am

Here’s the answer, Nothing Will Happen to Anyone. Sorry for the negativity but in your hearts you already know this. This is not about Russians or Trump or National Security or elections or anything like that. It is about an elite group of people who all believe they are entitled to power above us all. They are no different than the leaders of the Russian Revolution in their beliefs, just in the manner of accomplishing it. They are headed out of power and they want it back at and and all costs. They are fully willing to ruin our Republic to achieve their ends.
So nothing will be done to any of these people because they are still in power.

      Nothing will happen to anyone.

Things are already happening to people. It’s not much, its not prosecutions and it’s not jail time, nevertheless, things are already happening.

      * FBI Asst. Deputy Andrew McCabe announces intent to retire
      * FBI Legal Counsel, James Baker identified as leaker to media removed from responsibility
      * FISA Judge, Rudolph Contreras recuses himself
      * Bruce Ohr, DOJ Deputy Attorney demoted twice (husband of Nellie Ohr complicit within Fusion in the Steele dossier
      * Agent Strzok removed from Mueller team, 10,000 emails with his mistress showed incredible anti-Trump bias, including evidence that both were meeting with Andrew McCabe to discuss “insurance policy” in case Trump was elected, was contact FBI person for dossier, was lead agent in charge of Hillary Clinton email investigation, changed the wording from “grossly negligent” to “extremely careless,” also interviewed Michael Flynn, the basis of Mueller investigation. Demoted to lower position.
      * Sara Carter removed from Mueller investigation for bias also oversaw the bureau’s interviews with Flynn.

So, it’s not much. But it’s not nothing, and it is something that’s happening to people already even before any seriously damaging evidence is presented. The best is yet to come.

Your point is taken. Whatever does happen to these people it will not be enough to satisfy any real meaning of justice.

Abuse of power was the hallmark of the Obama years and this is probably the culmination of that abuse and arrogance of power. We as a country are being governed badly at this point. Unless all of this conspiracy is unraveled and exposed, we will become a country that is ruled instead of governed.

What about the possibility of Mueller bringing forward the conclusion of his investigation before its revealed that the basis for the investigation was based on fraud?

It would seem even more problematic to me if Mueller just threw out there a whole heap of accusations, regardless of how debased from reality they are or the fact there is no evidence to support anything he’s released BEFORE his investigation was declared unconstitutional!

So… What will Jeff Sessons and President Trump do with a gang of individuals who actively attempt to overthrow and usurp the Presidential authority, if that is what this is?

Will they be arrested and tried for treason, or just allowed to resign to live out their years in the comfort of their unearned wealth? Are there precedents in modern history or within the United States history?

It’s really kind of amazing how Obama managed to gather to himself so many corrupt individuals. Hopefully this will be the last major fire needed put out from this individual. AND…since I don’t know anyone who considers Obama to be a ‘great thinker’ or tactician, I wonder who was behind that sock puppet.

Milhouse in reply to C. Lashown. | January 19, 2018 at 8:56 am

Treason is not an option, which you would know if you’d ever bothered to read the constitution.

      Obie1 in reply to Milhouse. | January 19, 2018 at 10:10 am

You are assuming that the rule of law is extant, which most of us recognize as mythical as a chimera.

regulus arcturus in reply to Milhouse. | January 19, 2018 at 10:20 am

      We don’t know that yet.

If what is in this memo connects to the Hezbollah drug running criminality, then an argument could be made for treason, since we are effectively at war with terrorist orgs including Hezbollah.

I’m hearing that will be treated separately, so probably doesn’t tie-in directly here.

No, that would still not be treason, because an essential element of treason is adherence to the enemy. It’s not enough to help an enemy, treason is doing so because you support the enemy. Helping an enemy for some private reason, e.g. to get an advantage in domestic politics, is not treason. Don’t blame me, that’s how the framers wrote the constitution.

regulus arcturus in reply to Milhouse. | January 19, 2018 at 2:51 pm

          Wrong.

Hezbollah is most definitely the enemy, and allowing them to run drugs in the US is most definitely “adherence,” in pursuit of a larger goal – the Iran nuke “deal.”

If we find uranium made it to Iran and/or NK, then it’s definitely treason.

Milhouse in reply to Milhouse. | January 21, 2018 at 11:04 am

Regulus, adherence means support for their cause. Allowing them to run drugs in the US is not adherence. It may be motivated by adherence, in which case it would be treason, but in this case it wasn’t, and therefore isn’t.

This is not my opinion, it is settled and undisputed law.

      Gremlin1974 in reply to Milhouse. | January 19, 2018 at 3:12 pm

Actually, you can’t say for sure that “treason” isn’t an option. Unless you have been given access to the memo in question? I wold be careful of speaking in absolutes.

        Milhouse in reply to Gremlin1974. | January 21, 2018 at 11:08 am

I can say treason isn’t an option, because treason requires adherence to an enemy. Anything done for the purpose of obtaining a domestic political advantage rather than for the purpose of helping an enemy is not treason. Even sheltering an enemy agent in wartime, and helping him fulfill his mission for the enemy is not treason if it’s done for some reason other than wanting the enemy to win. This is settled law, not subject to dispute.

        C. Lashown in reply to MarkS. | January 19, 2018 at 5:33 pm

Perhaps the word ‘coup’, as in a political ‘coup’ by non-elected officials would meet the taste test? Revolt? Over-throw of power?

HOW exactly would anyone define this coordinated attack upon the President of the United States – not by just one person, but by an entire cabal of individuals? Give the losers a fair trial, then shoot `em in the morning. Send them to ‘Snowflake’ heaven!

Milhouse in reply to C. Lashown. | January 21, 2018 at 11:14 am

Neither “sedition” nor “coup” can be criminal in the United States. The sedition laws passed at various times, from the 1790s to the 1920s, are brazenly unconstitutional, and thus invalid. Schenck, the last decision upholding such a conviction, has been repudiated and is no longer law.

      Dear Readers of this Blog:

Either this guy ‘milhouse’ is either a child, institutionalized — or hillary klinton. Or barack obama.

‘Milhouse’s assertion that the Constitution governs the prosecution of treason exposes a pathetic ignorance of the law – especially by someone who is braggadiocious about having knowledge of the law at all, outside of what they can google. (Dilettantes do that sort of thing.)

Treason is governed by laws enacted by Congress (in this case, called the United States Code:
      https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/2381

Your link says the same exact thing Milhouse is telling you.

Yes, the constitution explicitly governs the prosecution of treason. Laws enacted by Congress can’t contradict the constitution; if they do they are not laws and can’t be enforced. In this case, of course, the law you linked to not only doesn’t contradict the constitution, it quotes it verbatim.

Obama didn’t gather them up, they are already there ready and willing to serve their party. They leapt into action to protect Hillary and to discredit any and all challenges. It was reflexive reaction to defend their way of life. Our entire government at every level in every state is stocked with these people throughout our civil services. This was apparent with Samuel Wurzelbacher, Joe the Plumber. And it is exacerbated by unionized public employees.

MaggotAtBroadAndWall | January 19, 2018 at 8:59 am

I want to believe it is as bad as they are portraying, but I’m skeptical. Part of the reason why people have lost trust in government is because both sides oversell everything. Saying it is “worse than Watergate” is a high bar. Lots of people involved with Watergate went to jail for a long time.

I hope they are not overselling here but I will not be surprised if they are.

Sh_t canning the 4th amendment is a big deal to me. It seems much broader than Watergate. Crimes were committed, but the repercussions, if viewed through a strictly political lens will appear as nothing more the retribution. I don’t know how, but the justice applied really must be above politics..
It is supposed to be, I understand that, but it sure doesn’t look that way…. Turbulence ahead.

regulus arcturus in reply to MaggotAtBroadAndWall. | January 19, 2018 at 10:24 am

My own assessment based on multiple sources (including my own rep. Andy Biggs who is leading the charge in the House with Gaetz, Jordan, and Nunes) is it is much worse than previously thought.

Direct criminality is contained within the memo as previously suspected from Samantha Power testimony, and nobody knows how deep FISA abuse went, or for how long.

There is much more that we and they do not yet know, but must be investigated, and perpetrators prosecuted.

It is probably far worse than it is being presented.

what we have is the domestic surveillance capabilities od the Unite States government being used directly against a citizen(s) who was not even suspected of being engaged in a criminal operation or conspiracy. It was done for political reasons. Now consider if that same government surveillance was turned upon private enterprise to aid a big donor or supporter of a specific administration. What about it being aimed at adversarial political or ideological organizations or groups? Then combine that with anonymous leaks of embarrassing or compromising information and you see how it can be used against US citizens as a weapon. Finally, what if compromising information, not necessarily evidence of criminal behavior, is gained and used to “influence” [blackmail] government officials? Yes, this is VEERRRRYYY BBBIIIIIGGGG stuff.

Under the new rules, why do we need to bother to vote on releasing this? Just send it to your perv spouse or assistant on their gmail account. Classified, schmassified, there are no consequences for overlords.

“there is not a smidgen of corruption in my administration”
(Barracck Soetoro, ca. 20l5)
He uttered thusly in an interview with Bill O’Reilly.
O’Reilly seemed t swallow this preposterous lie whole. Amazing, how naively credulous some people are.

Bitterlyclinging | January 19, 2018 at 11:53 am

There’s only one way you’re going to end the Robert Mueller investigation.
If Democrats have their way President DJT will have Robert Mueller dogging him until January 20th, 2025

I have stated, since just after Trump was inaugurated, that the domestic surveillance used against the Trump campaign would turn into the BIGGEST scandal in US history. It, along with the leaks of classified material, are likely to send a number of high level Obama administration officials to jail. And, that all of the “legal” actions being taken against Trump are directly related to protecting those people. When you add in the Uranium One, Clinton Foundation, Servergate, Fast and Furious and the weaponization of the IRS, you are talking a HHUUUGGGEE problem for the people in or allied with the Obama administration. The Trump surveillance is just the current tip of the iceberg.

One thing to remember is that Rosenstein was active in Uranium One and other Russian cases along with Mueller and Comey. And, that several original members of Mueller’s SC staff were involved in the Trump surveillance along with Comey. See the links, yet?

I agree it just the tip of the iceberg. I think it is interesting that Politico was willing to write about Operation Cassandra, and since it is not complimentary to the Obama administration, I have to think they are getting out in front of things. In the Politico article, I noticed they reveal that the Cassandra money was laundered by buying used cars. which, by the way, is what Debbie Wasserman Schulz’s IT guy, Awan was involved in. And that brings in Seth Rich. I think this is going to make a really great movie someday.

I think this going to be one BIG UGLY!!! At the very least, Strzok, Page, Orr’s etc, etc. are going down and if I were them, I would be taking some martial arts classes to help them with their time in the big house. It seems to me that they are being offered up as scapegoats by their superiors, hoping to placate the masses. Sucks to be them.

This is sedition on a scale unprecedented in not only U.S. history, but in the history of any free nation, except for – perhaps – the Weimar Republic.

This is Nuremberg Trial time.

Just do a Dianne Feinstein: release the f–king memos and let the prosecutions begin.

Right Sessions? Sessions? Sessions? zzzzzzzzzzzzzz……

President Trump has the power to reveal this information. This is why I think he should: The media selectively deplatforms all conservative voices. Nothing I say, or Kimberly says, or Steven King says, or Ben Shapiro, all the rest of us will make it into ‘mainstream’ alt-left publications. Our voices simply are not heard.

The only person who this rule doesn’t apply to is President Trump. The media literally hangs on every word he says, and parses it endlessly. Frankly, I don’t care what any of these congress critters make public, none of it will end up where the most people will see it. Either Trump will need to talk about this or it’ll be revealed and then promptly forgotten.

Also, I’ve heard some disturbing rumblings about the FISA warrant itself. We are told obummer went to the FISA court twice, failing the first time, but the second, some unnamed FISA judge ruled in his favor. We know the first FISA attempt judge, he recently recused himself of some case, but that second judge is a bit of a mystery. Everyone seems to just take it on faith that a FISA warrant exists.

So, take this hypothetical. obummer goes to fishing for FISA warrant and fails. He then simply instructs his intelligence services to start spying on the Trump campaign. It’s okay to do this, Hillary will be the next president and all of this illegality can be hidden by the deep state.

They begin to be surprised by better-than-expected campaign of Donald Trump, and certain members of the Deep State start to panic, so someone more clever than they should be begins working on a CYA project: If in the unlikely event of a Trump presidency, all of our spying activities were justified by the presence of a FISA warrant made necessary by collusion between Trump and the Russians. The Fusion GPS dossier would be the perfect pretext, and we just claim that we used it to obtain the FISA warrant.

Lots of speculation, but it explains a lot of the behavior of the Deep State, if they had surveilled Trump without even a FISA warrant. And people assume that this ‘insurance policy’ Peter Stroke spoke about was the FISA warrant itself. Perhaps what he was really talking about was the Fusion GPS document, in order to claim that they had a FISA warrant, and all of their spying was legal and justified.

Spying on domestic opponents without a FISA warrant is a very, very serious problem.

When is Comey going to play Uncle Arthur in the prison drama club adaptation of Bewitched?

Past performance can be an indicator of future action. ie, Republicans in charge of the executive branch, that includes DOJ, Will fold like a house of cards and agree to ignore Democrat operatives abuse of power in trade for Mueller saying, “oops, my bad, nothing to see here”
