Inevitable: Chicago Pastor Demands Washington Name be Removed from Park Because of Slavery Ties

A Chicago Pastor is demanding George Washington’s name be removed from a city park because Washington was a slave owner. He’s also targeting a park named after Andrew Jackson.

A Chicago pastor has asked the Emanuel administration to remove the names of two presidents who owned slaves from parks on the South Side, saying the city should not honor slave owners in black communities.
A bronze statue of George Washington on horseback stands at the corner of 51st and King Drive, at the northwest entrance to Washington Park.
Bishop James Dukes, pastor of Liberation Christian Center, said he wants the statue gone, and he wants George Washington’s name removed from the park.
“When I see that, I see a person who fought for the liberties, and I see people that fought for the justice and freedom of white America, because at that moment, we were still chattel slavery, and was three-fifths of humans,” he said. “Some people out here ask me, say ‘Well, you know, he taught his slaves to read.’ That’s almost sad; the equivalent of someone who kidnaps you, that you gave them something to eat.”
Dukes said, even though Washington was the nation’s first president and led the American army in the Revolutionary War, he’s no hero to the black community.
“There’s no way plausible that we would even think that they would erect a Malcolm X statue in Mount Greenwood, Lincoln Park, or any of that. Not that say Malcolm X was a bad guy; they just would not go for it,” he said. “Native Americans would not even think about putting up a Custer statue, because of the atrocities that he plagued upon Native Americans. And for them to say to us ‘just accept it’ is actually insulting.”
Dukes continued on his Facebook page:
We as Chicagoans must now take the microscope and place it on the statues, monuments and parks that we give honor to. We cannot allow slavery and racism to be awarded in our communities by honoring individuals that indeed partook in the very institution that has kidnapped, murdered, raped, and terrorized our forefather and mothers. The institution of slavery denied education, voting rights, marriage, family unity and property ownership. It has caused generations of psychological trauma, inequality, and lack of wealth that are still prevalent in the lives of us (the descendants of slaves).
We, as a country and city, must heal. That healing can only happen by making moral choices that reflect the creed, that all people are created equal and respected. We will not allow the atrocities of slavery and racism to live through memories in our communities; instead, they should be eradicated and dismantled.
Opportunistic wave riding if ever it existed, but revisionism is a nasty beast regardless of how or why it rears its awful head.
In 2014, Aretha Hence sued Liberation Christian Center and James E. Dukes for breach of contract, claiming they failed to pay back the almost $80,000 she lent them.
But opportunism aside, this is the natural progression of things — once you begin erasing historical monuments, there is no end. When it becomes wholly accepted to impose current values on historical figures and events, why bother with history at all?
As much as it pains me to say so, Trump called this very issue in his heated pressed Monday. “This week it’s Robert E. Lee. I notice that Stonewall Jackson’s [statue is] coming down. I wonder, is it George Washington next week, and is it Thomas Jefferson the week after? You really do have to ask yourself, when does it stop?” he asked.

The only reason blacks are here, as I understand, is they were brought here for slavery. If so, this fella, without his great-great-great-….-grandparents grievous injuries, would be in Africa. Would he have a show? A congregation? Mosquito nets? DDT?
Perhaps he should instead put up a statue to his ancestors, in thanks for their skills of survival under difficult conditions.

3/5 compromise (done partially to help end slavery sooner) was after washington and others WON the war.
I think his point was that slaves should have been counted in full, not as 3/5, so the Civil War and subsequent emancipation would have been delayed.

I’m afraid it stops when about 250 million white Americans think, “enough of this shit,” and realize, however reluctantly and belatedly, that White Nationalism may be the only alternative to allowing the United States to be turned into just another third world shithole. Washington Park is the site of the DuSable Museum of African American History. It is also the proposed site for the Obama presidential library.
Healing through erasing history does nothing to heal. Memories still remain and animosities fester. Erasing history further reminds me of the former Soviet Union. A name would disappear from official records and Pravda archives as if that person never existed,but there was always some one who remembered.
Spanish conquistadors are responsible for many of the place names in California. They committed atrocities, real or perceived against the native tribes. They force converted natives to Christianity. Should we now rename all our cites?
I wonder what the progressives of SF think of that idea? The city is named for the Mission San Francisco de Asis founded by Fr. Junipero Serra, which still stands today under the popular name Mission Delores.
And what of Junipero Serra himself? There’s a stone statue of him on a hill off of of Interstate 280 (aka Junipero Serra Fwy) overlooking the Crystal Springs reservoir.
Not only do these cities have Spanish names, many are named after Catholic saints. What about separation of church and state? And what do you do when the whole state has a Spanish name? Or even English (hated racist colonialist white people) names like New York?
We should just rename all cities using prime numbers.

I suspect much of the resentment towards minorities is due to Government mandated preferences in hiring and education. This certainly does not justify and violence.
How many generations, after affirmative action is stopped, will someone look at a person of color in a desirable position and not think it was because of a preference due to minority status and because of merit?

Certainly Bill Clinton and Bill Cosby would also have to be written out of history. Robert Byrd will have to go as well as all Southern Democrats and most Northern Democrats prior to the 1990’s. Seems to me there’s a fundamental difference between wanting to erase all honors to people who were traitors to the USA and people who were the founders of the USA. We can have legitimate debate about the first, but not the second.

If you want to be regarded as legitimate Americans, with the same rights and privileges as all others, then you must be Americans, which necessarily means adopting the civic religion of Americans, including the adoration of its founders. If Washington is not a hero to you, then you are not a real American and don’t deserve to be treated as one. If you set yourself up as an alien community, distinct from the nation, then expect to be treated accordingly.

The Democratic Party should be renamed to the Progressive Fascist Party because it was founded to fight for slavery and racism.
After destroying Confederate statues the liberal left might deface or destroy the headstones on the graves of the Confederate soldiers. The stones have Confederate symbols on them.
Then they could remove all references in every history book to the War Between the States including all references to slavery.
Once they remove everything about this chapter in our history, all Affirmative Action programs should be eliminated since slavery never existed.
It seems we have our own Isis in our midst, they are Liberal Left Leaning Democrats.
