Kathy Griffin’s Pity Party of a Press Conference

“I’m not afraid of Donald Trump. He’s a bully. I’ve dealt with old, white guys trying to keep me down my whole life, my whole career,” began Griffith, during her pity party Friday afternoon.
Griffith was fired from CNN after she posed with a bloody, decapitated likeness of President Trump’s head.
She released a short video, apologizing for “crossing the line”, and apology she reiterated during the press conference.
“A sitting president of the United States, and his grown children, and the first lady are personally — I feel, trying to ruin my life forever,” said Griffin who lamented being under investigation by the Secret Service.
Gloria Allred, Griffin’s attorney, said the actions (presumably the Secret Service investigation) were “unpresidential” and that no other first family has taken issue with humor attacking a sitting president.
No one made Griffin pose in an ISIS-like image with a bloody, Trump head. None of what followed happened to Griffin, a poor, innocent victim of circumstance. Everything Griffin is experiencing is a natural consequence of her poor decision. A lesson she clearly hasn’t learned.

Has anyone told her that the Secret Service is considering charging her? How does she expect this will influence their decision of whether to prosecute? Of course, she has already laid the foundation to plead insanity should the trial start trending badly.

Charging her with what? This is America, and she had the right to say what she did, just as everyone else has the right to tell her what they think of her, and to decide they’d rather not do business with her any more.
People are free to threaten the life of a President but there are consequences. Not all “free speech” is protected if there us a threat involved
With the exercise of every right comes the responsibility to accept the consequences of one’s actions. Many a conservative has had to suffer from progressive backlash (Rush, Hannity, to name just two). Griffin thought her progressive credentials would prevent a backlash, and it turns out she miscalculated. Progressives believe they should get away with anything that promotes the cause because they’re righteous and conservatives are evil.
We are not discussing a backlash. She is suffering that, and so she should. We are discussing legal consequences, and the constitution absolutely forbids any such consequences.
She did not threaten his life. Yes, all free speech is protected; that’s the definition of free speech.

DaveGinOly, look up the definition of incitement. It basically means depriving people of free will and causing them to commit crimes without making a conscious decision to do so. No, it is not OK for an imam to tell his congregation to go forth and kill Jews, but depending on how he says it it may not be incitement. If he merely advocates it in a calm and reasoned way, so that they remain free to decide for themselves whether to act on his advice, then it is protected speech. But if he whips them up in a manner that is both calculated and likely to make them immediately act on it without significant delay, then it’s incitement.

Fox and friends showed a behind the scenes video of her and Tyler Shields discussing the shoot, picking out images and commenting about the reaction. This was very, very deliberate for achieving maximum shock value. There was nothing spontaneous or haphazard. They were joking about having to move to Mexico. I say good riddance to her. Kathy Griffin and civil-rights lawyer Lisa Bloom came for Donald Trump Friday.
“I’m not afraid of Trump,” the 56-year-old comedian said. “He’s a bully. I’ve dealt with older white guys trying to keep me down my whole career.”
At a press conference, Griffin and Bloom addressed what they both view as a disproportionate response by the president and his family after she posed with a fake, severed Trump head for photographer Tyler Shields…
Bloom says Griffin is not in a fair fight and wouldn’t have been treated this way if she were a man. She noted that Marilyn Manson beheaded a Trump stand-in in a music video and never apologized like her client did.
“Unlike these male artists, Kathy has endured the most powerful man in America and his family using their power to target her and her employers after she apologized,” the attorney pointed out.
The biggest difference between Trump’s myriad other public quarrels and this one?
“He’s not just Donald Trump, real estate developer, having a celebrity feud,” Bloom said. “He’s using the power of the government.”
Griffin gradually regained her composure, proclaiming, “He wants to mess with me? He picked the wrong redhead!”
Does she cite any evidence that the Trump family has called places where she was scheduled to perform and got them to cancel? CNN cancelled her quickly. I don’t believe Trump has much influence at CNN these days.
I didn’t know about the Manson music video, but it was before the election. But, I’m sure more people are looking for it.
Griffin’s video is post election, with an obvious social media distribution planned and executed.

Does Griffin remember what happened to Mel Gibson after making some remarks about Jews, while he was drunk, and while in a private situation with police officers? (That is to say that Gibson was not intentionally broadcasting his inappropriate and offensive statements to a national audience – what he said was meant for public consumption.) Although there is a world of difference between the two situations, it took Gibson years to resurrect his career. Griffin should suffer no less.

Now, I have not heard a single elected (D) make even a peep.

Asking Republicans on-camera if they support a fellow conservatives controversial actions forces them to acknowledge the action publicly, and then either defend it (and risk facing similar backlash) or denounce it (and display weakness within the party).

Yes, all great fun sticking voodoo pins in this twit. But the annoying fact is that she miscalculated nothing.
She wanted headlines. She succeeded. In show biz, there’s no such thing as bad publicity. A low profile is professional death. Notoriety is the ticket to success, particularly for someone with no other significant talents.
There are few downsides. She’s in no danger. She isn’t going to be droned or Arkansized. She isn’t even going to be harassed to distraction by the IRS—that’s a Democratic game, not Trump’s. The only significant danger lies in exactly how the Justice Department treats threats to POTUS—it would be rash of her to assume that something like this will automatically be dismissed as “free speech”. Free speech which is also poor taste is protected, but the Secret Service may not agree when POTUS in involved. She wouldn’t be shot, but she might spend a significant portion of her remaining lifetime in court if Justice decides to make things annoying for her. Presumably she got some expensive legal advice about that angle before she launched this stunt.
And that would be a blatant violation of her clearly established civil liberties. Putting her through any legal harassment ought to be an automatic §1938 case, come down like a ton of bricks with no qualified immunity. We cannot have a chilling effect on free speech, no matter how offensive it is.
I agree. I doubt very much that the Secret Service investigation will show any actual intent to cur Trump’s head off or to incite someone else to do it. So the violation here is not legal, but moral. She chose to be repulsive and we can choose to avoid her “comedy” performances.
You can certainly make that argument. I probably would myself. But it remains a matter of interpretation, and how you or I interpret the 1st is hardly binding on any judge anywhere. More importantly, it has absolutely nothing to do with Griffin’s future fate at the hands of the government’s law-enforcement apparatus.
But my guess is that she’ll have no trouble. Rather, there will be just enough noise—real or imaginary—from the Secret Service for Griffin to claim enhanced Valiant Martyr™ status, thus keeping her in the headlines for another couple of days.

Exactly. There were hundreds of calls to the SS and links being shared to the venues of her upcoming events within minutes of the release of her picture/video and several hours before this story hit the news cycle when the Trumps would have seen it. (I kinda doubt they watch TMZ)
