Islamist Activist Linda Sarsour to Give Commencement Speech at CUNY

Astounding hypocrisy.

Do we even need to address the double standard here? Ann Coulter speaking on a college campus could cause riots but this woman is welcomed? Really?

The FOX News Insider reported:

Sharia Law Advocate to Give Commencement Speech at Taxpayer-Funded University

There’s been some controversy after the City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate School of Public Health announced a pro-Palestinian Sharia Law advocate will serve as the school’s commencement speaker.

“I am delighted to confirm that Linda Sarsour will indeed speak at our June 1 commencement at the Apollo Theater,” said Barbara Aaron, chief of staff to the school’s dean, Ayman El-Mohandes.

Now, some, including state Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn), are saying that Sarsour’s activisim and beliefs make her unfit to serve as speaker at the taxpayer-funded university’s commencement.

“She is someone who associates with radical Islamists,” Hikind said. “She is someone who has said, clearly, she thinks throwing rocks at cars in Israel is a good thing.”

“I mean, it’s just nuts. It makes no sense. It’s crazy to have this woman be the person who’s going to speak to the students,” Hikind added.

I do not like Linda sarSOUR but she should not be muzzled anymore than Ann Coulter! The free speech element of the First Amendment was specifically designed to protect unpopular political speech. This was put forth most eloquently by Evelyn B. Hall, who condensed Voltaire’s ideas into a single sentence:

“I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”

No speech should be suppressed unless it crosses into actual exhortations for violence.

It’s not a question of being “muzzled;” it’s a question of propriety. Universities should not be hosting embittered radicals at a commencement who espouse pro-Islamic (Islam representing a totalitarian ideology whose tenets stand in stark opposition to secular government, religous pluralism, individual freedoms and the values of the Enlightenment) and anti-Semitic views (though Sarsour cleverly couches her anti-Semitism under the shrewd Leftist marketing framework of “anti-Zionism”).

To do so is to not only grant such speakers a generous speaking fee for their time, more importantly, it grants them moral and intellectual legitimacy and a platform from which to spew their vile views. Further, CUNY is a publicly-funded university, meaning that New York City taxpayers (many of whom are Jewish) are funding this contemptible choice of a speaker.

Lastly, commencement speakers should ideally be people who possess some modicum of professional accomplishment. Sarsour has accomplished nothing, save exploiting the Left’s fetish for an intellectually dishonest and historically ignorant trifecta of Islamo-victimology, Islamo-flattery and Islamo-revisionism/re-branding. It’s a great country where an utterly worthless, spite-filled twit such as Sarsour can make a living shilling to the identity politics crowd as a “muslim activist,” instead of actually holding down a real job.
