Samantha Power sides with the oppressor

A champion of the oppressed no more.

The United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power recently wrote a piece for Politico arguing the Congress not reject the nuclear deal with Iran.

In short she argued that rejecting the deal would leave the United States, not Iran isolated and the ability of the United States would be greatly compromised in its ability to influence outcomes globally. Towards the end she summed up her argument:

The Iran nuclear deal has been championed by the president of the United States, every one of America’s European friends and countless other countries around the world. If Congress rejects the deal, we will project globally an America that is internally divided, unreliable and dismissive of the views of those with whom we built Iran’s sanctions architecture in the first place. Although it is hard to measure the precise impact of these perceptions, I and other American diplomats around the world draw every day on our nation’s soft power, which greatly enhances our ability to mobilize other countries to our side. While that soft power is built in many ways, two of its most important sources are the belief among other countries’ leaders and publics that we share similar values, and that America delivers on its commitments. Of course, there is no substitute for the essential deterrent and coercive effects rooted in the hard power of America’s unmatched military arsenal. But we should not underestimate the political capital we will lose—political capital that we draw upon for influence—if we walk away from this deal.

What makes Power’s plea so inexplicable is her record. As Claudia Rosett explained back in July:

Thirteen years ago, Samantha Power made a name for herself with her Pulitzer prize-winning book, “‘A Problem from Hell’: America and the Age of Genocide.” In this book, she explored the history of America’s reluctance to intervene to stop or prevent genocides. Prescribing American intervention as justified on grounds both “moral” and in service of “enlightened self-interest,” Power asked how something so clear in retrospect as the need to stop genocide could “become so muddled at the time by rationalization, institutional constraints, and a lack of imagination.”

In her argument for making the nuclear deal with Iran, one word from Power was missing, “Syria.”

Power, following her area of expertise, has been very vocal about the terrible carnage inflicted by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on his country. In August she blasted the regime for its use of barrel bombs and threatened to hold Assad and members of his government responsible for the use of chemical weapons.

But given the way the United States has acted in reaction to Assad’s crossing of a “red line” two years ago with a chemical weapons attack, these words are empty. After suggesting that he would use military force in response to the atrocity, President Barack Obama suddenly chose not too.

Instead a diplomatic solution was offered that would allow international inspectors to go into Syria and remove all of its chemical weapons. Of course trusting a bad actor to come clean about his illicit activities is never a good gamble and it wasn’t a good one in the case of Syria and its chemical weapons.

What makes Power’s support for the nuclear deal with Iran so inexplicable is that Iran is the main power behind Syria. (Though Russia’s support of Syria has lately been stepped up.) As Ben Weinthal, a research fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, wrote over the weekend.

European politicians have remained silent on Iran’s role in forcing Syrians to flee for their lives. Iran’s rulers have provided Assad with an economic lifeline to wage war. Hezbollah — Iran’s wholly owned terrorist subsidiary — has thousands of combatants fighting to retain Assad’s regime.

Making matters worse, Europe and the U.S. are slated to release $150 billion in sanctions relief money to Iran as part of the deal to curb Tehran’s illicit nuclear weapons program. Assad will soon get a fresh economic shot in the arm.

In fact, Assad declared the nuclear a “great victory,” probably in appreciation of the $1 billion line of credit Iran announced it had extended to him a week before the nuclear deal was agreed to.

Power has stayed with the administration despite its fecklessness in dealing with the Assad regime. Now the administration has done even worse and offered a boost to Assad’s primary backer.

Worst of all, it was Power who cast the vote for the United States for the deal in the United Nations. And now this champion of the oppressed is urging Congress to support a deal that strengthens an oppressor lest it make the United States look bad.

Samantha Powers… mmm… Isn’t she one of those ‘special’ State Department employees who, in her case, also works for the Kremlin in the side?

She and her husband Cass Sunstein are two of the most overrated leftist “intellectuals” of our time. Both have been proven wrong time and time again by events turning out the opposite of their predictions, yet they are still feted on the left.

In Powers’ case, her strong antipathy towards Israel supersedes any humanitarian compassion for Syrians or anyone else.

If Congress rejects the deal, we will project globally an America that is internally divided…

But we are internally divided!
That’s King O’s biggest accomplishment.
His Highness should have thought about that when he started acting unilaterally in just about every issue. Oh wait! He “don’t” care.

Some President we have!!
He has divided us by race, by income, by national origin.
He has destroyed America’s credibility and leadership position.
He has caved in to every sworn enemy of the United States.
He has betrayed our friends.
Some President!!

And this lady wants to blame Congress ??

It’s strange, I read this but it all I see is “Bush lied! People died!”, “This war is lost” and “9/11 was an inside job.”

Trump said the same thing a few weeks ago: it was too late to pull out; Iran would get the money anyway; and we’d be on the sidelines.

He’s right. At this point we go forward with the agreement, and when iranians are found to be cheating (they will) let’s hope we have a president in office with the resolve to do what’s necessary.

Sure, sanctions are dead, but that is longer-term relief. The $100 billion in frozen assets held in the USA is the big prize, and Obama holds that key.

She’s nuts. She’s a fascist. And she’s in power.

Now, think about Obama with 500 days left. Also think about McConnell and Boehner.

While we’re stuck with Obama, we’re not stuck with the latter two f–king idiots.

If you tolerate Boehner and McConnell, don’t complain about Trump. Or President Biden.

The entire thrust of Powers’ argument is so transparently foolish. She’s basiclly stating that the U.S. Must conform to appeasement and terror-enabling groupthink, because every other nation is also doing so. Great rationale! Many major powers kowtowed before Nazi Germany, also, in the run-up to WWII — did that make it a smart and morally laudable idea? These people are taking their marching orders from Obozo the vain, narcissistic, infantile, arrogant, self-aggrandizing demagogue-hustler-clown, so, none of this is surprising,

We should jump off a bridge because all our friends are doing it too, it looks like.

Iran is simply crony capitalism on a global scale. The EU wants it and the US wants it because it will be a gold rush. That’s really the only reason. And if it means that a few million Arabs, Kurds and Jews are incinerated then I am sure Sam Power will be the first in line to shout and scream “we should really try to avoid this sort of thing next time!”

Samantha: Does “BOX of ROCKS” resonate for’ya, Dearie??

Does “our enemies don’t fear us and our friends neither trust nor believe us” ring a bell, Honey Buns?

Does “Munich 1938–Appeasement of Butchers” within living memory and the Vast War it led to make it through your granite skull, Sam?

Never mind, Dear. Rhetorical Questions ALL.

She’s right. Obama has sold us out and the repubs were traitorous or stupid enough (or both) to allow a super majority needed to stop this nonsense. A this point there really is no going back and if somehow a repub get’s elected he could repudiate the deal but none of the other signers need do so and none would.

We could lead either direction here and we chose a nuclear Iran. Chew on that.

How did you propose to FORCE Obama to submit the deal as a treaty, since he said from the start he would not? Lacking a 2/3 veto-proof majority in both House and Senate, how would you do that?

There was simply NO alternative. Corker’s bill was the most that could muster 2/3 support. So you are complaining that Republicans couldn’t work a freaking miracle.

Samantha Powers is exactly the type of elitist, egotistical, arrogant, condescending fool that Victor Davis Hanson discusses today. She is one of the prime examples of why the West is foundering.

The world simply doesn’t work the way she thinks it works, and as a result she’s at a total loss to deliver anything that resembles sane, let alone sage, advice.

Mr. Gerstman notes that Ms. “Power has stayed with the administration despite its fecklessness in dealing with the Assad regime.” Mr. Gerstman doesn’t quite have it right: it’s not that the administration isn’t feckless (it is), it’s that Ms. Power is EQUALLY FECKLESS.

She doesn’t live in the real world. She doesn’t understand the millennium-old themes of power and human nature. She lives in a Marxist Shangri-La, a true ivory tower of beliefs formed in isolation of human experience. Because of that she helps to lead the current administration into repeated disasters. She can do no less.

More than ever, we need an administration run by adults who understand human history. Clearly no one in the Obama administration gets it.

David Gerstman in reply to stevewhitemd. | September 8, 2015 at 2:35 pm

I agree that she’s now feckless. But once upon a time she had credibility for lecturing the West about turning a blind eye towards slaughter. Now she’s complicit.

I know her husband was a Hippie & I think that she was also. From what she said, In what Universe does she operate ? We have an Admin. leading us who are our Enemy. Between the Islamist & Hippies in this Admin. We are in deep trouble.
