Mississippi Senate Primary Results (#MSSEN)(Update: Runoff)
Plus a few other results of interest. (Update: Joni Ernst wins Iowa Senate nomination)
UPDATE — Chris McDaniel won by less than 1% of the vote, but didn’t break 50% so there will be a runoff election on June 24.

The key race we are watching is the Mississippi Republican Senate Primary between incumbent Thad Cochran and Chris McDaniel. Polls close at 7 p.m. Central.
The race has been marked by a bizarre scandal of McDaniel supporters taping Cochran’s wife in a nursing home. Because the Cochran campaign waited at least two weeks to go to authorities, the scandal broke relatively close to the election. We don’t know what other shoes — if any — might drop. We also don’t know if the McDaniel campaign will be completely exonerated; as of now there is no evidence linking it to the taping. I also never got an answer to the question, What did the @NRSC know, and when did it know it?
We will post results as soon as meaningful numbers come in, so refresh your screen every 5 minutes or so. If not one gets 50%, there will be a runoff held June 24.

Mississippi has become dependably conservative in national and statewide races, but Democrats are far from dead on the local level. So the winner here should have a relatively easy time in the fall.
The nightmare scenario would be if McDaniel wins and suddenly the media decides a full investigation of the nursing home fiasco is warranted. The campaign has behaved oddly in reacting, and those arrested are known supporters.
The DA has already said that there was no connection to the McDaniel campaign.
He was talking about a media inquisition, as far as I can tell, and that is the only kind low information voters pay any attention to.
A reporter said the District Attorney, Michael Guest, had cleared McDaniel; shortly after that report, the DA responded that no one was cleared and the investigation was ongoing.
McDaniel has another problem. Three persons entered and were locked in the Hinds County Courthouse, where that county’s ballots were held, at 2:00 in the morning after the courthouse closed at 11:30. The three persons were a paid McDaniel’s staffer (coalition coordinator), the President of the Central Mississippi Tea Party, and a McDaniel supporter. His campaign is trying to spin this as no big deal, but there is no reason why they would try to enter the courthouse when it had been closed for two hours. Since the ballots were there, this could be a bigger deal than McDaniel supporters entering Rose Cochran’s room.

McDaniel will likely take a run-off. That is the pattern.
That irrelevant woman from Alaska has helped to generate a TP victory in Iowa, and will likely do the same in MS. What it is to be irrelevant like that!

You mean the lady who knows so little about the world that she predicted Crimea? Reminds me of this other guy who had this weird idea that the USSR could be brought down, which everyone on both sides “knew” was crazy.

While I cannot call that neck-n-neck race last night “fun” (I went to bed when McDaniel was down ~5000 votes and some tweeter used the phrase ‘its looking grim for McDaniel’), it is nice to wake up and get the results from a trusted source–especially when its good news like this.

If he did that, do they cancel the runoff? If not, does the law allow his name to be removed from the ballot?
