Gun Control Charts!

Gun Control Charts!

There is a fascinating discussion of gun control at Eudaimonia blog.

I don’t know who the author is, but the really, really loooong A Few Thoughts On Gun Control is well worth the read.

It is chock full of interesting images and charts like this one:

Professor, Karl Denniger (sp?) over at the Market-Ticker has been posting a number of really informtive posts on gun control, the stats, etc…just wanted to post them for others..It is more of an economic site, but he’s a strong defender of limited govt, so most of his revolve around that.

Here is a sample of them:

“Assault-rifle owners statewide are organizing a mass boycott of Gov. Cuomo’s new law mandating they register their weapons, daring officials to “come and take it away,” The Post has learned.

Gun-range owners and gun-rights advocates are encouraging hundreds of thousands of owners to defy the law, saying it’d be the largest act of civil disobedience in state history.

“I’ve heard from hundreds of people that they’re prepared to defy the law, and that number will be magnified by the thousands, by the tens of thousands, when the registration deadline comes,’’ said Brian Olesen, president of the American Shooters Supply, one of the largest gun dealers in the state.

Some folks in Albany apparently forgot how the American Revolution actually started.

The British decided they would try to learn exactly who had muskets, ball and powder — and intended to confiscate same. They sent a force to do exactly that, and were met by 70-odd Minutemen at Lexington Common, bearing arms.

The British ordered the Colonists to surrender their weapons. The Colonists refused.

Nobody is quite sure who shot first, but that was the actual start of the American Revolution.

It did not start over “taxation without representation”, although it can certainly be aruged that we are in that state today, where we are taxed but as citizens ignored, especially when it comes to the outrageous and blatant activity of various entities, whether it be banks or health care related firms.

No, the actual shooting started over something much more basic — the Crown’s attempt to confiscate firearms.

and it continues….

and another post, it has 2 videos explaining the stats:

An Observation that this post amplifies.

News stories generally grab headlines, not because of their significance but because of their rarity.

Test the theory at your leisure. We have 30,000 car deaths every year and seldom does it make the news unless its a big pile up or a celebrity is involved. We have a Sandy Hook or a Columbine and its big news because gun deaths are rare in comparison.

Precisely. It takes Chicago three weeks to equal the deaths from Sandy Hook — and the frequency helps bury the news.

If we were to have a violent breakdown of society, (I would put the chances at this time for this happening in the near- to intermediate future as extremely small, but reviewing history gives me pause) I firmly believe Jews would be the first and most vulnerable targets if marauding gangs of people were to overwhelm police.

This is the latest installment at Seraphic Secret of “Jews Without Guns.”

Make sure to read Mr. Avrech’s three-part “Jew Without a Gun.” It is fascinating, but quite scary.

I would agree with if you had said that 5 years ago. Right now I place the chances at 50/50 at the current time. Go to a gun shop. The shelves are bare. Mfrs in some cases now have a 2yr order backlog. Americans are not buying 5.56 and 7.62 calibre armaments @ $1000+ to have them decorate a wall. You would not be purchasing arms unless you expect hell to visit you in the near term. That is the consensus of the public at this time and that is important.

I have an interesting observation of death and the related tables, just to show how people really don’t care about death and morbidity. It has been found that cholesterol really has nothing to do with CV disease, thus reversing 50 years of accumulated knowledge on the subject. The real problem is a little know issue with vascular inflammation. Intensive study of the inflammation would dramatically reduce the impact of the disease. Yet we can’t do that. The reason is that our academic colleges will not seriously address the issue as they have accepted the cholesterol issue as the standard of care and that they would lose substantial funding from big pharma. So when they go on about guns, remember, it is nothing but smoke and mirrors and that we really could care about saving lives.

Don’t just blame “big pharma”. Look at how the radical vegetarians push an anti-meat agenda. The “Science in the Public Interest” group and how they push junk science to push people towards a high-grain, vegetarian diet.

David – whilst I love a good conspiracy theory the Idea of Inflammation as a disease causative factor has been around a long time.

Aspirin has long been recommended as a general preventative & ant infammatory agent .

But equally there is a reason for the inflammation & maybe that could be the problem.

However heart disease deaths have truly plummeted & transformed life especially for men 40+.

I am waiting for Professor Michael Mann to present a chart linking the heat generated by the explosion of gun powder and the friction of a bullet through the air to prove that firearms cause global warming.

The left will have a collective orgasm which might or might not contribute to global warming but will certainly scare the polar bears.

Table #2: Handgun Policies banning handguns is a predictor of increased murder rates, murder rates in the order of five to ten times more likely than without gun control legislation (see Chicago for more details). Somebody wake up Bob Schieffer and tell him.

that was awesome.

Time to start smuggling arms into NY ?

Henry Hawkins | January 21, 2013 at 3:01 pm

I’m trying to find the article, but I recently read that abut 67% of gun-related murders occur in urban areas, and something like 80% of those are gang-related.

Clearly it is time for the corn farmers outside Omaha to turn in their AR-15s.

franciscodanconia | January 21, 2013 at 3:46 pm

I wish Andy luck in his confiscation scheme in NY, as there’s scant chance anyone here will make an effort to comply.

Last line, if you’re born today you stand a 27.8% chance of being killed in the womb. Time to outlaw abortion, it’s for the children.

http://eudaimoniabygrace.wordpress.com/2013/01/20/a-few-thoughts-on-gun-control/

So to put death by firearm violence in perspective, given murder by firearms occurs at a rate of 3.6 per 100,000 people and using the death rates from the CDC: you are almost 1.0 x as likely to die from intestinal infections, 1.0 x as likely to die from a perinatal condition, 1.5 x as likely to die from alcoholic liver disease, 1.6 x as likely to die from choking on your food, 2.0 x as likely to die from Parkinson’s, 2.3 x as likely to die from an alcohol-induced event, 2.4 x as likely to fall to your death, 2.4 x as likely to die from high blood pressure, 2.9 x as likely to die from respiratory diseases, 2.9 x as likely to die from drug-induced mortality, 3.0 x as likely to die from liver failure and cirrhosis, 3.0 x as likely to die in a car wreck, 3.0 x as likely to be accidentally poisoned or exposed to noxious substances, 3.2 x as likely to die from septicemia, 3.4 x as likely to kill yourself, 3.9 x as likely to die from kidney failure, 4.8 x as likely to die from the flu and/or pneumonia, 6.5 x as likely to die from Diabetes, 7.6 x as likely to die from Alzheimer’s, 8.0 x as likely to die from a medical error, 10.9 x as likely to die in an accident, 11.5 x as likely to die from cerebrovascular disease, 12.8 x as likely to die from chronic lower respiratory disease, 16.2 x as likely to die from other heart diseases, 25.8 x as likely to die from all other diseases, 51.3 x as likely to die from a malignant neoplasm (cancer), 77.2 x as likely to die from major cardiovascular disease, and if you were to be born today, you would be approximately 27.8 times as likely to be killed before you even leave the womb.

Point taken, but you might want to reword your opening, which doesn’t make sense:

“Last line, if you’re born today you stand a 27.8% chance of being killed in the womb.”

If you’re born today, haven’t you already survived the possiblity of abortion?

Yes, yes, a small thing, but small things can hurt. Ask Todd Akin, Richard Mourdock, et al.

I say that international charts for most things are iffy. They are too easily manipulated – for example on the 2nd chart here the years are all over the place & I notice. The column is ‘Handguns banned ‘.

Every nation has a right to ban / limit whatever guns they like , USA included . Quite likely the various states or provinces in all have sub regulations.

The political & social factors might even include an ongoing civil war. for example Russia had Grozny ongoing & separatist Muslim insurgencies. Beslam was. A 300+ spike in one incident – us the resulting Russian revenge assassinations across the land – most likely highly targeted.

Byelorussii was in a very bad state of disarray in 99 , reeling from the mini dictator & the spillover Yeltsin Mafia. Just like the USA may become – there was a real fight for power waged between parties fighting for control of the country’s assets.

Gun crimes really need ALL guns & include serious injuries eg damage to organs – we can all live with surface or fat wounds. Here it must be noted the very much improved chances of survival in advanced medical care . The prime example is Gabrielle Giffords but any major city hospital lowers the death rate.

Fast forward to 2011 – Norway got 77 stone cold dead in one afternoon.

Just an example of political or cultural motivated shootings can manage. It would take a long time for modern Norwegians to get that annoyed at individual young socialists .

Not that Norwegians were a peaceful lot with their swords .77 in an Argo was piddling.
