The Muslim Brotherhood presidential candidate in Egypt may not be the most anti-Israel of the candidates running:
Last weekend’s announcement by Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood that it will field a presidential candidate, Khairat Shater, has drastically impacted the run-up to May’s elections. But his position on Israel is not significantly different than that of other candidates; indeed, some are more overtly hostile than he is.
The Muslim Bortherhood candidate is not doing well in the polls, which should be good news, but an even more anti-Israel politician, like Amr Moussa, may win:
Moussa, the first independent candidate to announce his presidential aspirations, is labeling himself as tough on Israel. In an interview with Al-Ahram on March 26, Moussa reminded readers of his fiery speech as foreign minister at the Madrid Peace Conference in 1991, in which he “politically brought Egypt back to the Arab battlefield in its confrontation with Israel.”
When the Muslim Brotherhood candidate is not the bad news, you know things have gone wrong.

The Egyptians have been under siege for over a millenium. It is their right and responsibility to recover their land. Unfortunately, the Muslims, and specifically the Arabs, have grown fond of their new home. This should be ripe for an activist intervention. For some reason, they supported the wrong side. Oh, never mind.

Omar Suleiman, Hosni Mubarak’s former spymaster, also just announced for the presidency. He’s a certified snake and has the advantage of knowing where a lot of bodies are buried.
The Salafist candidate, Hazem Salah Abu-Ismail, may be disqualified, as his mother once (may have) held an American passport, and thus had cooties. Apparently the new election law doesn’t permit one’s parents to have held a foreign passport — apparently it’s their equivalent of a ‘natural born citizen’ rule.
Amr Moussa is a Jerry Lewis look-alike who also is a snake; he’s just more amoral but he’ll certainly do whatever the Saudis want him to do.
But we’ll be spared Mohamed Mustafa ElBaradei, the former IAEA head, as a candidate — that simply would have been too much hypocrisy even for Egypt.
Correction: Amr Moussa is amoral, Jerry Lewis is not. Reading my comment I realize I might have been interpreted as saying the latter which I most certainly am not. Apologies.
The eternal upheaval in the middle east has hardened people around the world to the conflict. For me, whatever happens there is only what most believed would happen, total chaos, Islamic radicalization, just more of the same from the region. My only concern about the region is the protection of historical artifacts. The tragedy of the destruction of religious statues by the Taliban makes it clear they have no respect for anything or anyone. Egypt is a treasure trove of history and it would truly be a sad day for our children and the world if the Taliban were allowed to do the same there.
Personally all the ins amd outs of the politics there in Egypt are dizzying. Andy McCarthy gives us a great backgrounder to help sort out just who is who in Egypt.

So, while the whole Mideast-North Africa region along the Mediterranean goes bad, is the US establishing special immigration rules for Coptic Christians and other Christians in that area?
And yet, believe it or not, there are still people who insist that the Camp David Treaty was a good idea. As Sadat said at the time, “Poor Menachem, I got the Sinai, and all he got was a piece of paper”.
There is no good news coming out of Egypt. There is just news that we expected.
