President Trump's "shock and awe" approach continues with a massive crackdown on illegal aliens in Southern California.
Federal immigration officials say 160 people were arrested across the Southland over the past week during a crackdown targeting “criminal aliens, illegal re-entrants and immigration fugitives.” The arrests took place in six counties during what U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials described as a “five-day targeted enforcement operation” that began Monday and wrapped up around noon Friday.

I can forgive Legal Insurrection fans who think that Californians have lost their collective minds. 1) We have a group openly promoting secession and a state government that approved a #CalExit petition effort. 2) A senior politician seriously suggested the state withhold transfer of funds to the federal government. 3) Our representatives are mulling over a third gender option for identity documentation. Furthermore, in response to President Trump’s move to end sanctuary cities, our government officials are working to declare California a “Sanctuary State”.

In his pre-presidential life, Trump was famous for saying, "You're fired!" to people on his TV reality show. But Trump's firing of acting AG Sally Yates was no reality show. In real life, an AG advises a president on the law, but if that AG refuses to enforce an order that has been "approved as to form and legality by the Department of Justice Office of Legal Counsel," then a likely consequence would be that the AG could be fired. The NY Times reports Yates' motivation this way:
Ms. Yates, like other senior government officials, was caught by surprise by the executive order and agonized over the weekend about how to respond, two Justice Department officials involved in the weekend deliberations said. Ms. Yates considered resigning but she told colleagues she did not want to leave it to her successor to face the same dilemma.
But I would imagine that Ms. Yates understood that her successor would almost certainly face the same dilemma, whether Yates resigned or was fired. And although I grant that Yates and other government officials may indeed have been surprised by the speed of Trump's executive order, if they were surprised by the content of the order then they hadn't been paying much attention to Trump's campaign.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has declared a ban on sanctuary cities in the state. He stated that elected officials do not get to choose which state and federal laws to enforce:
“As elected officials, it is our responsibility to protect all Texans,” Abbott said during his State of the State speech today in Austin. “It’s our burden to deal with the consequences of the federal government not doing its job to secure our border,” Abbott continued.

Day Deux of Joe Scarborough's tirade against the Trump admin's handling of the executive order on immigration. On today's Morning Joe, Scarborough condemned the admin's accusation that acting AG Sally Yates had "betrayed" the Justice Department by refusing to enforce the executive order. Scarborough repeatedly called the use of the word "frightening," suggesting it was worthy of an "autocrat" in a country like Venezuela. Scarborough then turned the tables, saying that Stephen Miller, Steve Bannon, and Trump himself had "betrayed" Defense Secretary Mattis, DHS head John Kelly, and others by failing to provide them details of the order before it was made public. Scarborough expressed outrage that Stephen Miller and others in the administration apparently believed they could not trust those heroes with a secret.

European Union's Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini has issued a threat directed at U.S. President Donald Trump. Mogherini warned President Trump that he would "end up being in a prison" for his executive orders, one which temporarily halted the entry of Syrian refugees and another which seeks to begin the construction of a southern border wall, UK newspaper Express reports. Mogherini also lectured President Trump on European history and tradition, and on how Europeans celebrate "when walls are brought down and bridges are built." Italian politician Mogherini played a key role in negotiating the Iran Deal or the "worst deal ever negotiated" as President Trump pointed out. She began her political career with the youth wing of the Italian communist party and made it to the post of E.U.'s High Representative on Foreign Affairs and Security Policy as a member of the 'Party of European Socialists'.

The showdown over sanctuary city policies between California and the Trump administration continues to escalate. After President Trump signed an executive order reinforcing current immigration regulations, politicians in our state's government opted to counter that order by exploring ways to protect the non-citizens who are already here.
The cities and counties Trump is targeting have many tools to strike back. Among the most potent are high court decisions that have interpreted financial threats like the one Trump is now making as an unlawful intrusion on state’s rights.

As President Trump moves forward on his campaign promises regarding illegal immigration, the progressive left is (delightfully) apoplectic. Sanctuary cities, in particular, are of special significance to them as Democrat mayors across the nation insist that they will resist Trump's efforts. Boston mayor, Marty Walsh, is taking his "resist we much" stance one step further and has declared that Boston's City Hall is now one big "safe space" for illegal aliens.  He asserts that illegals can move in and live right there at City Hall, presumably "safe" from deportation. It is not clear how far Walsh intends to go in harboring and protecting Massachusetts' illegal aliens from ICE.

Miami Mayor Carlos Gimenez has ordered municipal jails to comply with President Trump's recent Executive Order which reinforces federal immigration regulations and laws. In an interview with Fox and Friends Friday morning, Mayor Gimenez said, ""When the president (Donald Trump) issued his executive order, he just put an exclamation point for me on that issue. It really was a no-brainer. It's a $52,000 a year issue for Miami-Dade, so we will now go back to our 2014 policy that we will honor the detention requests regardless of the fact that the government says they'll pay for it."

President Donald Trump will address a few executive orders from the Department of Homeland Security, including a wall on the border with Mexico, immigration, CIA black sites, and declaring the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organization. It's his first visit with DHS Secretary John Kelly. We have a live feed after the jump. I will provide tweets and updates as it goes.

President Donald Trump will sign a bunch of executive orders today over national security issues, including a wall along the border of America and Mexico and policy against sanctuary cities. Trump will visit the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) where he will sign all the orders. Trump made immigration the cornerstone of his campaign, often talking about a wall along the border and stopping Syrian refugees from entering the country. According to the Associated Press, one person in the administration said the proposals "included a ban on entry to the U.S. for at least 30 days from countries including Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen, though the person cautioned the details could still change."

Question for Cokie Roberts: how many refugees admitted into the US during WWII went on to commit mass-murder terrorist acts in our country? The question arises because on today's Morning Joe, Cokie contended that shutting out Syrian refugees would be like "shutting the Jews out during World War II." Roberts made her remark in the context of claiming that the plans President Trump has announced are "extremely dangerous for the United States of America."

The immigration battle is heating up in Texas. Just last Friday, "the newly elected sheriff, who campaigned on the issue, announced Friday that her department would reduce its cooperation with federal immigration authorities when they request an inmate be flagged for possible deportation. Her office said it would still continue to hold people charged with very serious crimes, such as capital murder." Monday, calling her directive "dangerous" and "shortsighted", Governor Greg Abbott sent a letter to Travis County Sheriff Sally Hernandez threatening to cut state funding if she persisted in her refusal to enforce federal immigration laws. Travis county is one of the state's few liberal vestiges and home of state capitol, Austin.

In the tense political maneuvering between California's progressive representatives and the Trump administration, our state may have just blinked first. The repeal and replacement of Obamacare has been one the most consistent promises of President Donald Trump during his successful campaign. And, controlling illegal immigration has been just about the biggest plank in Trump's platform. So, in the height of the general election campaign, our state's politicians decided it would be a great idea to be the first state to offer Obamacare to illegal immigrants.
