Dr Neil deGrasse Tyson makes the case that Newt is right about the moon.
” coming from another direction, if the nation dreams big and that percolates its way through society, the dreams are enabled by prowless in science. once everybody gets the feeling through them, they want to become scientists and engineers and participate in this adventure. scientists and engineers who are the seeds of tomorrow’s economies in this competitive 21st century we’re entering. i submit i want to go to the moon and mars to explore, but that’s not the biggest reason to do so.”
Looks like once the Independents get a good look at Romney versus Obama, they’re having second thoughts about Romney:
Romney’s negative ratings soaring among independents
By Greg Sargent
…”[I]n the new [Jan. 2012] poll, Romney was rated somewhat or very negatively by 42 percent of independents — 20 points higher than two months ago.
Also: In November, Romney was beating Obama 47-34 among those voters. Now the numbers are upside down: Obama is beating Romney 44-36.
(A recent Post/ABC News poll also found Romney’s negative rating among independent had jumped to 51 percent.)
Pollster Peter Hart, a Democrat, tells me Romney’s multiple gaffes and revelations about his taxes and Bain background have led independents to start making a choice between Romney and Obama, rather than merely looking at Romney as a generic opponent of the President.
“Romney’s lack of connection with average people and Obama’s improving numbers on the economy account for the turnaround with independents,” Hart said.
“It’s not as though they have said Bain has disqualified him or that he can’t be trusted because of his taxes — but this has created a gulf between him and the average voter,” Hart said. “Bain and the taxes just reinforce the sense that this person is in a different world. If you’re an independent voter not driven by partisanship, you read all the other tea leaves to decide who is going to fight your fight.”
“When he was only the opponent of Obama, he was getting the independent vote as the alternative,” Hart says. “Now they see him in full relief, and they’re saying, `This isn’t my guy.’”
Bret Baer was talking today about Newt’s allegation that Romney’s people packed the audience last night and said that when Fox did their debates, the STATE REPUBLICAN PARTY was in charge of distributing the tickets to the debates. He assumed that it was the same for the Florida debates.
Since Romney has been working Florida since 2008, and spreading plenty of money around amongst political operatives in the state, I would assume that the ruling class DID pack the audience for Romney.
From today’s Goldberg file (weekly email letter from Jonah Goldberg):
“To the Moon!
“I’ve got to say, I don’t like the way everyone thinks Newt’s desire to go back to the moon is proof of his craziness. Now, yes, when the country is drowning in debt, proposing a moon colony is arguably politically crazy (though Floridians on the Space Coast probably don’t think so). Indeed, when you have a reputation for saying whacked-out stuff, leading with your lunar ambitions can be confused too easily for lunacy itself (“I see what you did there” — The Couch).
“But look: I like the idea of space exploration and I see it as one of the few areas where government can and should be involved. No, that doesn’t mean I’m in favor of a big white elephant, or Amtrak in space. I think Gingrich is largely right about prizes and the like. When Romney had his line about corporate America having no interest in going to space, he was being deliberately obtuse. Of course “corporate America” isn’t much interested in going to space (though obviously some firms are). That’s why you create prizes so you can get corporate America, and Americans generally, interested in going to space.
“I’m a cathedrals-in-space guy. In a previous life, I made a breathtakingly mediocre documentary about Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. I learned a lot in the process. One of the enduring takeaways for me was that there are some things society invests in to inspire everyone. The rich can always afford art and inspiration; cathedrals provided art and inspiration for rich and poor alike. In the Middle Ages, cathedral-building represented a space race of a sort. They were built on the highest land around and city-states competed to build the tallest spires in order to get closer to God.
“We are a pioneering people, and I see the effort to, as Reagan said, “slip the surly bonds of Earth to touch the face of God” as a worthwhile endeavor for a great nation. I bet the Founders would be more comfortable with the idea of American expansion to the moon than with, say, Medicare. Can you say “Louisiana Purchase in spa-a-a-a-a-a-ace”?
“If that’s all too frilly for you, think of it this way: Lord knows I’m no Keynesian, but if you believe even a fraction of this multiplier stuff or a scintilla about the need to train up a new generation of scientists and engineers, then spending money on space exploration makes a lot more sense than most of the junk in the stimulus. I’m completely pragmatic about how to do it, and heavily biased toward free-market approaches, but I think it’s worth doing.
“The mockery of Gingrich over this seems more like a poor reflection on our own national spirit than on Gingrich himself.”
Excellent. America’s Manifest Destiny extended to space. That is indeed a worthy goal, which will involve both public and private investment; but, due to the sheer magnitude of such a venture, cannot be completed without societal contribution.
Thanks for posting, hamilcarb. There is a fine line that distinguishes between redistributive change and promoting the general Welfare. We should be careful to not throw out the baby with the bathwater. It is entirely possible and, indeed, necessary at times for a government to not only act as overseer but also as director, and still preserve individual dignity (the foundational principle of America’s establishment). The distinction can be inferred through the general Welfare clause.
This angers me no end. And its exactly what we will get when a Romney is the handy target. As some of us suggested in vain…he becomes the villian. And dont misunderstand..I have 0 complaint about what others earn.
I’m still a Cain believer [noting in passing his Tea-Party SOTU response] in conjunction with the recent revelations of the 2008 Romney attacks on Fred Thompson and Huckabee………
I’m reminded again that in 2008 20% of self-identified voters voted for Obama.
The Economic situation we are in today and were seeing in 2008 was similar to what the US was faced with in the 1920 Election. In 1920 “The Progressive Party” of the 1912 Election who gave the Election to Woodrow Wilson…voted for a dark horse non-progressive Republican who with Coolidge got the economy going inside 18 months.
I don’t see Romney stopping and reversing Obamacare.
I don’t see Romney invoking Hauser’s Law.
I don’t see Romney supporting Tea Party goals…
Newt wasn’t my first choice to do what’s already been done and proven with the 1920 Election, but he’ll do.
Dr Jerry Pournelle, who has an INCREDIBLE pedigree in science and space engineering, (He was founding president of Pepperdine Research Institute after decades in space engineering and writing – this guy’s brain soesn’t have a lower gear!) is the likely source of Newt’s space policy. He and New go way back.
Here’s something he wrote in 2003:
F. Opie Senior Economist Feri Resarch GmbH
I can solve the space access problem with a few sentences.
Be it enacted by the Congress of the United States:
The Treasurer of the United States is directed to pay to the first American owned company (if corporate at least 60% of the shares must be held by American citizens) the following sums for the following accomplishments. No monies shall be paid until the goals specified are accomplished and certified by suitable experts from the National Science Foundation or the National Academy of Science:
1. The sum of $2 billion to be paid for construction of 3 operational spacecraft which have achieved low earth orbit, returned to earth, and flown to orbit again three times in a period of three weeks.
2. The sum of $5 billion to be paid for construction and maintenance of a space station which has been continuously in orbit with at least 5 Americans aboard for a period of not less than three years and one day. The crew need not be the same persons for the entire time, but at no time shall the station be unoccupied.
3. The sum of $12 billion to be paid for construction and maintenance of a Lunar base in which no fewer than 31 Americans have continuously resided for a period of not less than four years and one day.
4. The sum of $10 billion to be paid for construction and maintenance of a solar power satellite system which delivers at least 800 megaWatts of electric power to a receiving station or stations in the United States for a period of at least two years and one day.
5. The payments made shall be exempt from all US taxes.
That would do it. Not one cent to be paid until the goals are accomplished. Not a bit of risk, and if it can’t be done for those sums, well, no harm done to the treasury.
I had Newt Gingrich persuaded to do this before he found he couldn’t keep the office of Speaker. I haven’t had any audiences with his successors.
Henry Vanderbilt points out that having a prize, say $1 billion, for the second firm to achieve point (1) above will get more into the competition, and produce better results. I agree. For more on Prizes see next week.
“Reagan Author Shirley: Romney Attack of Gingrich Is ‘Preposterous’”
“Shirley argues that Romney is a descendant of “a long line of conservative bashers.” Romney’s father, George, who also ran for the presidency, walked away from conservatives in 1964 and his mother ran on a pro-abortion platform in a campaign for the Senate, Shirley observed.”
Via Glenn Reynolds, Instapundit UPDATE: It’s also sad to see all our punditry miss out on what Newt’s doing here — he’s pandering to the tens of thousands of space workers in Florida who have been, or will be soon, laid off under Obama. Honestly, this should have been the lead item: “Pandering Newt,” not “Daffy Newt.” Do try to think outside the storyline, people.
You’ve spent years working hard to build a credible site here. Balanced, objective.
Why have you chosen to throw that all way, just so you can defend a flawed, bi-polar, faux-conservative creep like Newt? (Don’t get me wrong — Mitt is evil too . . .)
YOU can’t actually effect the outcome of the primaries, but you certainly can (and have)knee-capped your own site with your obsession over Newt.
We all know what it’s like to become so fixated that we start to hurt ourselves. You’re past that point, dude.
Wise up. Newt sure ain’t worth it . . . ask his ex-wives.
I see some improvement but not enough. Again…the beef is in the unadjusted data found just below the sales pitch. Still over the magic target of 400,000. Also some improvement in the total collecting figure but that is either folks getting jobs or falling off the rolls as payments end.
apparently the average taxpayer really only pays 12%, since their are a lot of “standard deductions”. So can we see what Buffet’s secretary makes, since she allegedly pays a higher rate? Is she making six figures?”
You should take credit, since maybe they are trolling your site for material. Or maybe it was an obvious question, though I haven’t seen it addressed for the weeks this has been out there.
Mitt’s tax returns are as expected except for the $10-15Million in IRA’s for him and his wife. Now I have run a small business for 20 years and know something about SEP-IRA’s. There is a maximum amount you can contribute each year (it’s about $40K now and was less earlier). It’s pretty tough to contribute this much every year and get $10M without a pretty high return. Mitt must have shoved some of his deal assets in his IRA’s. Pretty clever, but not something an ordinary Joe could do for the same money.
Combined with his offshore accounts, it would be a great thing to highlight the efforts he has to go through to minimize his taxes and how he wants to extend this to everybody. To hide it shows that it is just for the governing classes, not us.
Powerline has a video of constitutional scholars Richard Epstein and John Yoo discussing with Peter Robinson of the Hoover Institute how they think SCOTUS will deal with Obamacare.
Professor, you are quoted in the article “7 reasons voters are souring on Romney” that I just linked. Here’s the quote within this paragraph:
6. He can’t handle his rivals’ attacks Romney’s spiking unpopularity “coincides with a difficult period” on the trail, says Nate Silver at The New York Times. His GOP rivals have been drawing blood with “attacks against him that may resonate more with independent voters than among actual Republicans.” That validates my long-held theory that Romney can’t “withstand the types of attacks used by Ted Kennedy (Bain) and John McCain (lack of core convictions),” says William Jacobson at Legal Insurrection. Romney never went through the “withering assault and scrutiny” his opponents did last fall. Now that he is finally getting a taste, it’s “showing up in polling.”
If you’re tired of Drudge’s bias, http://www.newsmax.com might be an alternative. They have a headline today defending Gingrich against the old ethics charges. Newsmax does seem to carry opposing viewpoints as well, so I’m not sure if it’s a conservative site, but one worth looking into.
This is what people read….and assume because its CNN Money..it must be fact. What planet do these writers live on? This sort of fantasy is what I might expect at Kos or similar.
Visit the Shopping Page for allLegal Insurrection store links, your purchases help support this blog.
What They Are Saying About Me
"Someone with credibility is saying these things and trying to do something. Thank you."
"'Obtuse' is just about the nicest thing I could say about Jacobson. The problem with being too steeped in any profession is that you run the risk of no longer understanding the difference between reality and your profession's most obscure minutiae."
"I just wanted to thank you for writing such a great article on your reasons why you voted for John McCain. I wish everyone would have read that article."
"Jacobson is doing only what other McCain supporters are starting to do, produce these worthless pieces from some narrow perch in order to cover up their own racist bigotry"
"Cornell and the country need more educators like yourself to keep the flag of reason flying."
“I take it Jacobson teaches at the cow college part of Cornell, and not the elite section where Coulter attended.”
"Thank you for speaking out... and I hope you avoid repercussions in 'The People's Republic of Ithaca.'"

Something tells me you’ve already researched this
SF Chronicle article that is referenced in the Romney campaign ad:

Hey Prof,
You’ve spent years working hard to build a credible site here.

Weekly Unemployment Report
http://www.dol.gov/opa/media/press/eta/ui/current.htm
I see some improvement but not enough. Again…the beef is in the unadjusted data found just below the sales pitch. Still over the magic target of 400,000. Also some improvement in the total collecting figure but that is either folks getting jobs or falling off the rolls as payments end.

“Denial Runs Deep In The Romney Camps”
“It is really disturbing when your side loses its objectivity and shows signs of deep political denial. It makes them look just like liberals.
For example, the Romney camps are singing “Amen!” at a bunch of new polls out. Just check this out at Hot Air:
This makes three new polls showing him [Romney] either tied with Newt or back in the lead after Gingrich’s big post-South Carolina surge.
I am simply stunned at these claims as I showed in a comment on this post. The part I emphasized is mathematically wrong. Dead wrong.”

“You heard it here first”
This afternoon Forbes answered my question”
“Midwest Rhino | January 25, 2012 at 1:29 pm
apparently the average taxpayer really only pays 12%, since their are a lot of “standard deductions”. So can we see what Buffet’s secretary makes, since she allegedly pays a higher rate? Is she making six figures?”

You should take credit, since maybe they are trolling your site for material. Or maybe it was an obvious question, though I haven’t seen it addressed for the weeks this has been out there.

About Romney’s 15% rate? Hold on a darn minute. He’s changed his mind — now says his tax rate is actually 40 or 50% or something. http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2012/01/25/411746/romney-tax-rate-spin-50-percent/?mobile=nc

Romney’s IRA’s something bothers me.

Seven reasons voters are souring on Mitt Romney

Now that he is finally getting a taste, it’s “showing up in polling.”

http://www.CNSnews.com is also a conservative news website. The news there is organized under various tabs and not under one page though.

From the eager novelists at CNN Money Branch of the Presidential reelection campaign we have this tidbut:
http://money.cnn.com/2012/01/25/technology/apple_steve_jobs/index.htm
This is what people read….and assume because its CNN Money..it must be fact. What planet do these writers live on? This sort of fantasy is what I might expect at Kos or similar.
