An anonymous contribution — allegories always fall short but this tries to capture the sequestration crisis …
A couple earns $58,000 per year, a little less than they used to before the economy went sour. But their real problem is lifestyle choices that cause them to spend too much, now up to about $100,000 per year. As a result, they have been racking up over $40,000 in additional credit card debt every year for the past four years.
As one might imagine, this can’t go on forever. The wife — too long a willing partner in the overspending — has become increasingly insistent that they need to dial back their lifestyle, but the husband refuses. He insists that she put in longer hours to increase their income (despite the fact that she already contributes more than half of the family income).
Things came to a crisis point last summer when they were about to max out their last credit card. He wanted her to work more, she wanted to cut back on the spending. In the end she only secured his promise to eventually agree to cutting back some spending as a condition of her applying for another credit card and putting in extra hours.
Since then, the spending has continued and the husband has refused to even talk about cutting, and insists that she put in even more hours. With the newest card now approaching its credit limit, the wife has insisted that she cannot and will not work double overtime unless something changes.
“FINE!” he exploded “We’ll do it YOUR way! We’ll cut back by … $2,000 a year! And here’s what is going to go first: the kids’ lunch money! Your cell phone. Pet food! There, are you happy now?!?
With that, he stormed out of the house, hopped in his car, and headed out for yet another round of golf.
…the actual effects of cutting a few billion — not from the budget as it existed in 2012 but from its projected increase — should be trivial. But it is in the power of the President to make it painful; and, if this President is true to form, he will make it as painful as possible.
…
The name of the game for our President is to force a crisis that will eventuate in massive tax increases — first on high earners and then on the middle class more generally.
A great deal is at stake in this little tempest in a teapot. In the next few weeks, the Republicans can lay the foundation for a resurgence. Or they can demonstrate their fecklessness and their worthlessness.
1. Bill Moyers has put out a feeler for socialism. He didn’t say so explicitly, but read and decide.
The tone of his promised follow-up program will indicate how the trial balloon is received.
2. Iirc I’ve posted this scenario before: the Left wants to follow Obama with an Elizabeth Warren on his left. No serious attempt to impose socialism will be made for a decade or two, e.g. until the President after the President after Obama.
During President Barack Obama’s meeting with U.S. governors at the White House Monday, the president dismissed members of the press to hold a private, hourlong discussion with the visiting state executives. Whatever was said after the cameras left the room especially incensed South Carolina Republican Gov. Nikki Haley. . . .
“I could not be more frustrated than I am right now,” Haley told reporters after the meeting. She said that when she asked Obama if he would consider a last-minute plan to shave about 2 percent from the annual federal budget without increasing taxes, the answer was “no.”
“My kids could go and find $83 billion out of a $4 trillion budget,” Haley said. “This is not rocket science.”
No wonder our children are near the bottom of all nations in achievement. They are being forced to embrace invented delusions and deceptions that go against reality, logic and evidence. This is actually a cause of insanity.

But I refuse to leave our children with a debt that they cannot repay, and that means taking responsibility right now in this administration for getting our spending under control.’”

You would think by this time that the urbane sophisticates in the news media would be totally hip to the “Washington Monument” strategy, whereby the Park Service closes the most popular attractions first in the event of budget constraints. It’s the oldest bureaucratic trick in the book, and a mark of how far the corruption of our republic has proceeded: if the spenders don’t get their way, they’ll cut back first on the most essential services for which we presume to pay our first tax dollars.

Republicans should do more than just prepare legislation providing “flexibility” to the executive branch to administer these tiny budget cuts. They should prepare detailed budget cuts of their own department-by-department, providing exact line items of what programs can be cut or delayed under a sequester in the Dept. of Transportation, for example, so that it is not necessary to cut back on air traffic controllers in the towers, or food safety inspectors at USDA. They should announce these on a daily basis, as well as highlighting just one wasteful program in each department every day. The Pentagon should not be exempt from this, either. I’m sure the Pentagon can delay sexual harassment training programs for a few months, or can tell some colonels to drive their own cars to base instead of having a personal driver.
New Jersey next Friday will suspend enrollment in an insurance program for people with preexisting medical conditions mandated by the new federal health care law, officials said.
The state was directed to do so by the federal Department of Health and Human Services, which received limited funding from Congress to provide coverage in each of the 50 states. Without the suspension, the Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan would be in danger of running out of money to cover those currently enrolled, according to a message posted on the program’s website.
