“There was no apparent intent or threat,’’ Burton said. “It was never brandished nor was it loaded.’’

Here’s a name: Savita Halappanava, who died in Ireland after allegedly being refused an abortion to terminate an evolving miscarriage.
2. Extreme cases like Morbelli’s and Halappanava’s should not be ignored, but usually they should not drive a policy debate.
3. Here is a too-rare account of a civil, mutually respectful discussion of abortion by people with opposing views.
4. Why are such discussions so rare? Why is the abortion debate, among others, dominated by take-no-prisoners extremists on each side? It’s as though the pro- and anti-abortion absolutists cooperate in keeping any middle ground a no man’s wasteland.
My reading is that nobody was “refused” an abortion.
You might want to read a bit more closely…
“Praveen Halappanavar’s account of the treatment of his wife, Savita, in Galway University Hospital last year has been vindicated by leaks of the draft report into her death, his solicitor said yesterday.
Solicitor Gerard O’Donnell said Mr Halappanavar was too upset to talk after discovering that details of the HSE report into his wife’s death were leaked. Yesterday’s Evening Herald carried extracts of an early draft of the report.
“If what was published today were extracts from the report then all they do is, in some ways, vindicate what my client said from the outset as to the way his wife was treated at University Hospital Galway,” Mr O’Donnell said.
Ms Halappanavar died at the hospital on October 28th last year, a week after she presented with back pain and was found to be miscarrying.
The draft report deals with a number of issues relating to her death, including whether her request for a termination should have been considered and whether guidelines on terminations in general are adequate. It examines the lines of responsibility of the staff providing her care as well as the follow-up that occurred where tests were carried out.
Differences of opinion
The draft report also looks at how busy staff were with other patients at the time as well as the records kept of her treatment. Interviews carried out by the investigating group uncovered differences of opinion between some staff on key aspects of her treatment.
My reading is that nobody was “refused” an abortion.
I took pains to insert the word ‘allegedly’.
You might want to read a bit more closely…
You might want to continue to the very next paragraph in the passage you quoted:
Mr Halappanavar told The Irish Times when it broke the story of his wife’s death last November that she had repeatedly asked for a termination. While this was not recorded in the medical notes, it has been confirmed in statements by hospital staff to the coroner.
The final report of the investigation has not yet been published. This particular investigation may or may not be the last word.
In any event, as I went on to say, public policy usually should not be based on outlying special cases, however heartbreaking they may be.
Instead of spending vast sums, and crushing freedoms, in the name of a witch-doctor religion (Gorebal Climate Thingy), we should be spending some money on avoiding a real global threat.
Oh, and IF the planet is saved from a mass extinction event via meteorite, it will not be through the Dolphin Defense System but by humans.
Ham Sandwich Nation: Due Process When Everything is a Crime
Abstract:
Though extensive due process protections apply to the investigation of crimes, and to criminal trials, perhaps the most important part of the criminal process — the decision whether to charge a defendant, and with what — is almost entirely discretionary. Given the plethora of criminal laws and regulations in today’s society, this due process gap allows prosecutors to charge almost anyone they take a deep interest in. This Essay discusses the problem in the context of recent prosecutorial controversies involving the cases of Aaron Swartz and David Gregory, and offers some suggested remedies, along with a call for further discussion.

Perliger warns that growing legions of conservative-minded citizens across the U.S. pose a serious threat to our nation’s safety… so-called extremists fall into the categories of anti-federalists, fundamentalist Christians, survivalists, gun-rights advocates, libertarians, pro-lifers, and those who oppose high taxation…

“Betrayed is a good word,” former Sgt. Munley told ABC News in a tearful interview to be broadcast tonight on “World News with Diane Sawyer” and “Nightline.”
“Not to the least little bit have the victims been taken care of,” she said. “In fact they’ve been neglected.”
—
Munley, since laid off from her job with the base’s civilian police force, was shot three times as she and her partner, Sgt. Mark Todd, confronted Hasan, who witnesses said had shouted “Allahu Akbar” as he opened fire on soldiers being processed for deployment to Afghanistan.
As Munley lay wounded, Todd fired the five bullets credited with bringing Hasan down.
Despite extensive evidence that Hasan was in communication with al Qaeda leader Anwar al-Awlaki prior to the attack, the military has denied the victims a Purple Heart and is treating the incident as “workplace violence” instead of “combat related” or terrorism.
DON’T LET REPUBLICANS STEAL THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AGAIN
In the 2012 election, more Americans voted for Democratic members of Congress than Republicans. Yet tea party darling Eric Cantor is the Majority Leader and John Boehner serves as Speaker — and they’re blocking President Obama’s pro-jobs legislation and pushing a right-wing ideological agenda. They didn’t earn those positions; they stole them.
He is relaxed, more voluble and even more confident than usual, these people say, freer to drop profanities or dismiss others’ ideas — enough that even some supporters fear the potential for hubris.
VP Joe Biden was at Girard College in Philadelphia, yesterday pushing the administration’s ‘gun control’ agenda. In his comments, Biden was differentiating between what he calls the ‘legitimate media’ (MSM/ pro-admin) and the ‘social media’ (others/ anti-adm).
I assume that this site (and others opposed) is now termed ‘illegitimate’ by the administration.

Well. ‘Bout time.
Can you say, “Sucka…???”

Well, yeah. Your value as a prop was exhausted long ago…

Wow. Hard to know if the delusion is exceeded by the butt-hurt or the other way around…
He is relaxed, more voluble and even more confident than usual, these people say, freer to drop profanities or dismiss others’ ideas — enough that even some supporters fear the potential for hubris.

And, of course, they say that like it’s a good thing.
Watch for it tonight. Think of it…MORE hubris than before.
PRAVDA in action….

Retired SEAL.
“I’m running because I refuse to be cynical about America or about America’s future,” he said in a lengthy statement released Monday night. “I’m a doer and an optimist by nature and especially about our country. Certainly people will say, ‘This can’t be fixed.’ Well, I’ve spent a good part of my life working on and accomplishing a lot of things most people said were either too hard or impossible.”
Lord Monckton (or John Hinderaker, hard to tell) has a term for Gorebal Warmists I like…
