Missouri Governor Calls for Removal of State Senator Who Called for Trump Assassination

“Last night, in an interview, she refused to apologize—twice. If she will not resign, the Senate can vote to remove her. I believe they should”

A Missouri state senator posted on Facebook that she hopes President Trump is assassinated.  Her comment, since deleted, acknowledged that such a statement is likely to earn her scrutiny from the Secret Service.  And it has.

Not only is state senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal (D-MO) facing a Secret Service probe, but she is also being called upon to resign.  Further, Missouri Governor Eric Greitens (R) is urging the state legislature to remove Chappelle-Nadal should she refuse to honor the bipartisan calls for her resignation.

Fox News reported on Chappelle-Nadal’s Facebook post:

Democratic state senator in Missouri is facing resignation calls for posting on Facebook Thursday that she hopes President Trump is assassinated.

“I hope Trump is assassinated!” state Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal wrote.

Chappelle-Nadal eventually deleted the post, but a screenshot was saved and shared on Twitter.

Needless to say, such an outrageous statement regarding the assassination of a United States President earned her a Secret Service investigation.

Chappelle-Nadal quickly walked back her statement, stating that she was just expressing her anger and frustration, not actually calling for the assassination of the president.

The Kansas City Star reports:

A Democratic Missouri state senator from University City posted, then quickly deleted, a comment on Facebook saying she hoped President Donald Trump would be assassinated.

As a result of Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal’s comment, the U.S. Secret Service’s St. Louis field office is investigating and both Sen. Claire McCaskill and the chairman of the Missouri Democratic Party have called on her to resign.

Chappelle-Nadal told The Star that she posted the comment out of frustration with the “trauma and despair” the president is causing with his statements about the events in Charlottesville, Va.

“The way I responded this morning was wrong,” she told The Star. “I’m frustrated. Did I mean the statement? No. Am I frustrated? Absolutely. The president is causing damage. He’s causing hate.”

Chappelle-Nadal posted the comment on her personal Facebook page, which is not open to the public.

“On my personal Facebook, I put up a statement saying that I really hate Trump. He’s causing trauma and nightmares. That was my original post,” she said. “A whole bunch of people responded to that.”

Later in the thread, in response to another commenter, she wrote: “I hope Trump is assassinated!”

She later deleted the comment.

“It was wrong for me to post that,” Chappelle-Nadal said. “But I am not going to shy away from the damage this president is causing.”

It’s worth noting at this point that for millions of Americans, Obama “caused trauma and nightmares” and “caused hate.”  In fact, it’s nearly impossible to find an American president who has not done so within his opposition’s ranks and base.

Watch Chappelle-Nadal defend her Facebook comment:

Calling for the assassination of a president, however, is such a problem that even Democrats are calling for Chappelle-Nadal’s removal from office.

The Kansas City Star continues:

Stephen Webber, chairman of the Missouri Democratic Party, agreed that Chappelle-Nadal should resign.

“State Sen. Chappelle-Nadal’s comments are indefensible,” Webber said. “All sides need to agree that there is no room for suggestions of political violence in America — and the Missouri Democratic Party will absolutely not tolerate calls for the assassination of the president. I believe she should resign.”

Missouri Auditor Nicole Galloway, a Columbia Democrat, tweeted that Chappelle-Nadal’s “words and sentiments are absolutely unacceptable. Violent rhetoric has no place in our political discourse.”

Rep. Shamed Dogan, a St. Louis County Republican, joined in the condemnation of Chappelle-Nadal.

“I don’t care what the president says or how mad you are, you don’t call for his assassination,” he posted on Twitter. “Especially if you’re an elected official.”

The calls for Chappelle-Nadal’s removal from office include those of Missouri’s governor.

Fox News reports:

Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens joined calls Friday for state Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal to be expelled from the legislature after saying she hopes President Trump is assassinated.

The Republican governor put out a string of tweets noting that lawmakers have called on the Democratic lawmaker to resign and urged the Senate to kick her out if she refuses.

“Senator Chappelle-Nadal said she hopes the President is killed. Republicans and Democrats have called on her to resign,” he wrote. “… Last night, in an interview, she refused to apologize—twice. If she will not resign, the Senate can vote to remove her. I believe they should.”

Chappelle-Nadal, however, remains defiant.  She says, “there’s no way in hell that I’m resigning.”

“Speaking truth to power!” I say keep her in …. we need politicians like her to telegraph what the Left says in private.

I trust some begin to see what Israel has to deal with. The churning of hate, the instilling of hate, the false narratives…when they become ingrained that they can be shut down or modified .. they blurt out these true feelings. As Thurgood Marshall said … affirmative action will be a centuries long process.

Now lets see of those who called for her to resign actually follow through with their impeachment of her. She claims President Trump is causing hate, yet her statement to assassinate the president is a much more hateful comment then anything the president has ever said. Nadal needs to go. I noticed that name Nadal, I wonder if she is related to that other famous Muslim jihadis Major Hasan Nidal.

Positive progress.

Both color diversity and color supremacy deny individual dignity. The left’s concept of “diversity” is a variation on a theme of the national socialist practice.

She will stand on her black+female+fat privilege.

This is such an easy fix.

The refusal to apologize for making a death threat indicates a lack of remorse. Which means she still wants the President to be assassinated and should be considered a threat.

So the Secret Service or FBI detains her until they feel she is no longer a threat to the President.

Bets she would apology profusely within 3 days?

Wanting the president assassinated is not a crime. It is the god-given right of every person, protected by the first amendment, to express such a wish. Not only can expressing such a wish not be made illegal, a government entity may not fire an employee for doing so.

The Secret Service can politely inquire to make sure she isn’t planning to make her wish come true, but they can not harass her or in any way act to discourage her or anyone else from expressing such an opinion in the future. If they were to lay a hand on her they would go to prison. If they were to act in any way that has a chilling effect on protected speech they would face a guaranteed loss in a civil rights suit.

It’s even questionable whether the senate can expel her for such a thing. I think it can, because the MO constitution lets it expel a member for any reason, except one for which it has already expelled that member once. But a plausible case could be brought under Rankin. I don’t think it would succeed, but one never knows.

Remember how President Trump was criticized about saying there are some people on both sides who are nice?

In looking at some of the posts from the Boston event. There was a nice lady holding a flag and she was attacked. She was a “nice person”, just holding a flag.

But, when she sat on the ground, there were two black-clad people who stopped to help her and one went to get a medic (dressed in white with a white face mask). Those counter-protesters were also “nice people”.

So, again, Trump was correct in that there are nice people everywhere. It’s just that they are not always recognized as such since the bad people overshadow the good.

Yes, it is far past time to look at exactly what kind of damage President has caused this nation.

So far, employment is up. The GDP is up. Tax revenue is up, without a tax increase. Small and medium business success is up. Illegal immigration is down. The arrests of members of a very dangerous international criminal gang are up. The violation of citizens civil rights, by the federal government [such things as illegal domestic surveillance and improper use of the IRS against political opposition], is down, if now no longer extant. So, government violation of citizen’s civil rights, down. These would seem to be all positives.

So, let’s take a look at how the Trump administration is harming the country. International corporations have to keep existing manufacturing operations in this country and, in some cases, move some back into the country. This may result in decreased short term profits, but also results in increased domestic employment. And, in spite of this, stock prices are UP. Hummmmm. The social justice grievance industry may see a reduction in revenues. Hummm. Residents who reside in the US in contravention of existing law may actually have to leave and re-enter the country legally. So, criminals would have to obey the law. Hummm. The EPA will not be able to shut down an entire farming operation, in perpetuity, because an “endangered” mouse is found on the property, even after the mouse has left the property. Hummm. The EPA will not be able to regulate how much CO2 a person produces through the necessary act of breathing. Hummm, perhaps they have gone too far with this one [LOL]. The federal government will allow pipelines to bring much needed petroleum and natural gas into the country, thereby driving down prices and dependence upon sources of energy controlled by semi-hostile governments.

So, what harm is the Trump administration actually doing to this country?

But didn’t you hear — he called white supremacists “repugnant to everything we hold dear as Americans.”

Can you believe he said that?? He’s practically screaming his support for the white supremacist Nazis!!

And last week he nearly got us into a nuclear war — we were only saved by the calm and merciful forbearance of Chairman Kim!!

I call it the legal insurrection game where you take the party of the person in question and change it to the other party. If you do it to this idiot we can all imagine how a conservative Republican would fair saying the same thing about obama! Not for one minute would the alphabet msm let it drop. The talk shows would be quoting them and DEMANDING not only a resignation but legal action. Oh well, another day in la la land. We know that the Dem gov will not follow through and upset the “Constituents” of East St. Louis.

Thank gooodness! I was afraid the left was about to run out of useful martyrs, what with Heather Heyer’s death now a week old.

Her mom was at the Boston protest inferring a lot about Trump. We will see her again and again just as the Mothers of the Boy Martyrs at the Dem Convention for BLM. We do not really know what happened in Charlottesville…. but time to set the hook…..

Shock, anger, bargaining…but I doubt any resolution… once locked into the “cause” the wounds will never be allowed to heal. They may never anyway…but… I would imagine now seared with hate…. and misplaced.

I would love to see her forced out, if only to see the rioting that will finish off what is left of St. Louis. This time, with a Republican governor and a Republican president, the rioting thugs will not be tolerated, unlike when Michael Brown went to his deserved death and we had a Communist President and Missouri had a Socialist governor let the city burn.

Apparently, irony is lost on the left. So is self-introspection. Whether you agree or disagree with anything Trump has done or said, nothing can approach calling for the cold-blooded murder of another human being. If events descend into anarchary and people on both sides of the argument are hurt or killed, the blood will be fully on the hands of these crazy lefties.

no way in hell?… that’s just where this person may be headed… enjoy the trip…

I’m sure Crazy Maxine Waters and the CBC are preparing a defense.
They’re building a catapult to toss the biggest race card ever seen!

Just a very small quibble…

When did “So…” become the universal predicate word for answering a question? It’s been something I’ve noted for some time.

I can’t wait for the calls of “Racism!” It’s only a matter of time.

While it’s nice to see both parties agreeing on something, and the “bring the nation together” types are doubtless pleased with the way this is developing, the fact is that even this dumbnuts has First Amendment protections which should be taken seriously. And since those restrictions apply to the government more than to most of us, it’s not obvious how the legislature or the governor could actually penalize her by throwing her out. While “I hope Trump is [etc … I don’t want to type it]” is certainly vile, and other Missouri pols may think that a hope that any politician be assassinated cuts a bit too close to home, it’s hard to read actual “incitement” there.

Thomas Beckett might differ on a point or two. She is just saying what a lot of people WANT. Read Dowd’s NYT piece about Trump and Charlottesville but especially read the comments section for an otherworldly view of things…. as in “on another planet”. We have a serious psychological and psychiatric gulf forming in this country .

Milhouse in reply to alaskabob. | August 20, 2017 at 2:14 am

Yes, she said what a lot of people want, and they have every right to want it, and to express that desire. This is absolutely protected speech, and no government entity may do anything to discourage it. But I think the senate could still expel her for it, notwithstanding that.

Milhouse in reply to tom swift. | August 20, 2017 at 2:12 am

You are correct that what she wrote is absolutely protected speech, and if she were a government employee it would be illegal to fire her for this.

I think, though, that 2/3 of the state senate could expel her even for exercising her constitutional rights. Expulsion is fundamentally a political sanction, not an administrative one. The only limit the MO constitution places on 2/3 of the senate’s right to expel a member is that they may not expel the same member twice for the same reason; to me that says that if one party has 2/3 of the seats they can expel the other 1/3 just for belonging to the other party, which is obviously constitutionally protected. Therefore they could expel her for this too. If she were to be reelected then they couldn’t do it again.

Another consideration: Even if Rankin should in principle prevent such an expulsion, I’m sure the courts would call it a political question and thus none of their business.

Someone says, “Assassinate the President,” eh. Someone says the ‘N’ word, death threats and mayhem take over across the country.

“Then the Secret Service should just shoot her.”

Although I’m not particularly conservative myself, I’d like to be able to refer liberals to this site so that they can see how well-founded Tea Party members’ concerns and proposals tend to be. Comments like yours will, instead, tend to confirm the liberals’ belief that Tea Partiers are fascists who need to be opposed by all means necessary.
