Rachel Maddow’s career committed suicide live on national TV tonight

Big Trump tax returns “Scoop” flopped, bigly.

http://www.mrctv.org/videos/cecile-richards-maddow

Rachel Maddow has a history of claiming big scoops which then flop.

There was the debunked 2012 big scoop about supposed GOP wrongdoing in Michigan. And the 2014 big scoop that the Koch Brothers were behind Florida groups pushing drug testing for welfare recipients, which was not true. We covered the Florida non-scoop big scoop, Rachel Maddow’s come undone with Koch Derangement Syndrome.

Tonight Maddow claimed to have Donald Trump’s tax returns. The internet lit up.

https://twitter.com/maddow/status/841795163664089089?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw

The interest was stoked when the person who obtained the “tax returns” and was to appear on Maddow’s show tweeted out as similar message:

https://twitter.com/DavidCayJ/status/841801318939398145

But very quickly, tax returns (plural) turned into Form 1040 from 2005.

https://twitter.com/maddow/status/841807273513107456

The White House pushed back even before airtime:

The White House says President Donald Trump made more than $150 million in income in 2005 and paid $38 million in income taxes that year.

The acknowledgement comes as MSNBC host Rachel Maddow says she has obtained part of Trump’s 2005 tax forms.

The White House is pushing back pre-emptively, saying that publishing those returns would be illegal.

It says, “You know you are desperate for ratings when you are willing to violate the law to push a story about two pages of tax returns from over a decade ago.”

As to any revelations in the tax return that hurts Trump? Maddow didn’t bring the goods. She started off by stalling on a 15 minute monologue that revealed zero about the returns, giving rise to much mockery:

https://twitter.com/rorycooper/status/841818652940865536

As she was stalling, her secret source and guest published the information on his own website, which The Daily Beast then posted before Maddow made the reveal:

Donald Trump earned more than $150 million in the year 2005—and paid just a small percentage of that in regular federal income taxes. Daily Beast contributor David Cay Johnston has obtained what appear to be the first two pages of Trump’s 2005 federal income tax return, and published an analysis of those pages on his website, DCReport.org. The Daily Beast could not independently verify these documents.
The documents show Trump and his wife Melania paying $5.3 million in regular federal income tax—a rate of less than 4% However, the Trumps paid an additional $31 million in the so-called “alternative minimum tax,” or AMT. Trump has previously called for the elimination of this tax….

Trump’s 2005 return also shows that he’d continued to benefit from the roughly $916 million loss he reported in his 1995 return—published last year by The New York Times. Using a loophole Congress closed in 1996, Trump converted that loss into a tax credit for the same amount he could offset against income.

Tucker Carlson also reported on the story as Maddow was stalling:

So there was no there there.

If anything, Maddow helped Trump by showing the paid $38 million in taxes on $150 million of income. Hardly the narrative the Democrats like.

Just another embarrassing performance.

After that – you can watch Geraldo opening Al Capone’s Treasure Vault again.

guyjones in reply to MattMusson. | March 15, 2017 at 12:31 pm

At least Geraldo’s theatrics involved greater suspense, even if the payoff was something of a letdown, inasmuch as all that the safe contained was a couple of empty bottles of Gilbey’s gin.

LCVRWC in reply to guyjones. | March 16, 2017 at 12:04 pm

Agreed. At least Geraldo has the excuse they didn’t know what was in the vault until it was opened. This makes one wonder if MSNBC even read the freakin’ tax return before making their mountain out of a molehill.

I mistakenly hit the thumbs down icon. Couldn’t reverse it. Sorry! Rachel is such a silly boy!

    Spinning spinning.
Isn’t the TRUE fact that millions of people tuned in to see DT’s tax return. Disproving DT’s fake comments that no one cares.

His sycophants and the news competition spun this, ignoring the numbers of people who tuned in.

“Alternative Minimum Tax”…
…if that isn’t the most contrived, government-created doublespeak ever invented…

Close The Fed | March 14, 2017 at 9:39 pm

If the person that leaked this isn’t found, arrested, indicted, prosecuted and imprisoned, then we are all doomed to this. They can leak anyone’s and get away with it.

Tom Servo in reply to Close The Fed. | March 14, 2017 at 9:52 pm

The really bizarre thing about Maddow and the left making such a big deal about this is, suppose these really are authentic copies of that return (I’m not convinced of that, but lets suppose)

What they show is exactly what I would expect to see if Trump were managing his taxes in exactly the same way as every other person of wealth in this country, and they are in complete agreement with everything he has ever said.

So what is the storyline here – that he is wealthy and that he hasn’t misled anybody about that? I just don’t get it.

great unknown in reply to Tom Servo. | March 14, 2017 at 10:48 pm

By now, you realize that they are authentic, since The President preempted her by releasing his own copy.

Tom Servo in reply to great unknown. | March 15, 2017 at 11:06 am

Yes, and they show exactly what I said – that Trump is wealthy and that he pays taxes. So that’s what the left is going with???

MATRESSES IN THE TRUMP HOTELS, MISSING THE ‘REMOVE UNDER PENALTY OF LAW’ TAGS!!!!! Tonight, on ‘Rachel Maddow Wastes Your Time!!!!

So MSNBC is the abbreviation for the MicroSoft NothingBurger Corp, apparently.

Oh that Rachel. I wonder how much more of this self-immolation it would take for me to start feeling sorry for the guy.

Sheesh. Another debunked scoop for Madcow. She’s the female Geraldo.

Can we arrest Maddow now?

Maddow is the New Geraldo with Capone’s Vault.

VaGentleman in reply to jabster. | March 14, 2017 at 10:35 pm

Except that, compared to Maddow, Capone’s vault was interesting.

Geraldo didn’t know what to expect with the vault, she had this info before she started her babbling

Good Lord. They are stretching to the breaking point, maybe past it.

Who was that unmasked man?

” Well don’t you know he is the Stoned Ranger” r

great unknown | March 14, 2017 at 10:50 pm

This was so beneficial for President Trump that the conspirator in me suspects that he set her up by leaking the document himself.

Maybe – and this would be a galactic overlord class troll – he can offer her a job in his press office.

What the heck was this guy trying to do?

rabidfox in reply to Romey. | March 15, 2017 at 10:13 pm

Wasn’t there a bounty offered on Trump’s tax returns. Maybe he’s in it for the cash. And notoriety.

Know it nothings acting like know it alls.

FYI, Maddow “stalled” so the OTHER guy could “leak” so that SHE could simply be legally REPORTING the leak rather than BE the leaker (which could arguably be a felony).

He didn’t “blow” her “scoop,” all this was be design.

–Andrew

Andrew, what’s the first Rule of asking a witness a question? You better the answer.

I don’t think MadCow knew anything more than she was gonna be the modern day Woodward or Bernstein who was gonna sink the presidency of Donald J. Trump. The tax return actually killed several of the Dem talking points and shown that he paid a hell of a lot of taxes in a pretty high tax bracket.

Alternative theory: She did know what was on the return and was too caught up in her chance at stardom to appreciate how un-damaging the return was.

DINORightMarie in reply to Andrew Branca. | March 19, 2017 at 9:12 am

Now the question is: who is the IRS leaker?

They can trace who touched these documents, who accessed them. So, the IRS HAS TO KNOW, if it came from there – and that is a federal criminal offense.

If it was from a tax-preparer who worked for Trump……that would be criminal, yes?!

What she was wanting was the sources of trumps income…what a disappointment that was to her…. lol
little does she know though is…. Under the federal law 26 USC 6103 Trump can’t reveal his sources of income to the public without the sources permission even though he owns the records. And under that same law, as she claimed her right under the 1st Amendment to publish them… She is not exempt to publish it with out Trumps written approval. She showed that the White House said in writing that it was an ILLEGAL TAX RETURN.
She should have stopped right there and not gone any further with it. Now the burden of proof is on her to show that she had permission by the named party(s) on the return to disclose the information.

The “BIG SCOOP” was a big scoop of intellectual doo-doo.

Maddow another typical leftist feminist who, like Linda Sarsour, and Angela Davis, and others, never developed emotionally past early childhood. Now the rest of us have to tolerate these little girl tantrums that are disconnected from reality. Woe is us.

It’s the fattest envelope in the social security lockbox.

There are a couple things here.

The real story isn’t the tax returns BUT the fact part of his tax reforms is the abolishing of the alt minimum tax because apparently it’s the only thing that ensures the mega wealthy pay their fair share of tax (according to the Gyarduan this morning). So do you see it? Trump is LOOKING after the wealthy!! It’s all about the memes!!

Secondly, no one will end up in prison! End of!

the only thing that ensures the mega wealthy pay their fair share of tax

The Alt-Min was a device invented by leftists to loot people whose legitimate deductions reduced that year’s tax to near zero. All the lefties can see is gross income, and they want to punish everyone who has it, using the ‘fair share’ mantra the way they chant ‘justice’ when their lynch mob burns a business without trial.

The Alt-Min hits a lot of people who are not bazillionaires, and yet have deductible expenses which cost real money – up front.

    ss396 in reply to mailman. | March 15, 2017 at 5:01 pm

What is the “fair share” of taxes that people should pay?
What is YOUR fair share of income tax to be paid?

Why would this be career suicide. For libs, this kind of screw-up is career-enhancing.

So Trump paid about 25% in taxes? I would bet you a nickle that 25% is a hell of a lot more than Madcow paid in taxed.

Fox graphic this morning..

X Potus,, 2015 18.75%

Sen. B. Sanders, 2014 13.5%

Yawn.

Sounds like
(1) Maddow announced she has Trump’s tax return! Maybe she does have a full return from 2005 or another year.

(2) Trump’s people contacted her people and told them this is illegal and she would really regret it if she goes like with it. But here we’ll give you an out. She agrees. Maybe this negotiation was happening even during her show, leading to the stalling.

(3) As agreed, Trump makes a tweet and his friend Carlson publishes 2 pages of the 2005 return, very complimentary to Trump. Maddow “fulfills” her promise by giving the same 2 pages.

BTW this was a joint return, Donald Trump and his wife Melania. Those two pages show their joint income, etc.
No one has mentioned this so far.

SNL skit:
Cold open with clip of Maddow stalling on her show – about two minutes.
Before every commercial break, return to Maddow for 30 seconds.
End show with 30 seconds of Maddow show, only to cut it off just before “the big reveal.”

RReaganConservative | March 15, 2017 at 9:48 am

Tom Del Beccaro
Dear Rachel Maddow,
About the Trump tax return pages that show he paid $38 million in taxes . . .
26 U.S. Code § 7213(c) says “It shall be unlawful for any person to whom any return or return information (as defined in section 6103(b)) is disclosed in a manner unauthorized by this title thereafter willfully to print or publish in any manner not provided by law any such return or return information. Any violation of this paragraph shall be a felony punishable by a fine in any amount not exceeding $5,000, or imprisonment of not more than 5 years, or both, together with the costs of prosecution.”
Did you lawyer up?

RReaganConservative | March 15, 2017 at 9:53 am

This is what happens when you dedicate your whole world to trying to discredit, smear, and destroy people (Republicans), instead of being an actual journalist reporter and anchor host, conducting yourself with professionalism and integrity.

First there was “jumping the shark”.
Now there’s performing the gymnastic maneuver, “The Al Capone Vault” over the shark.

So simple!

In a political sense, MSNBC got rick-rolled.

What a dumbass he/she (whatever Maddow is), and keeps on proving.

inspectorudy | March 15, 2017 at 3:56 pm

What do you call a lesbian that undergoes a sex change operation?

Not so fast. There are people out there dumb enough to believe that this tax return PROVES DJT isn’t a billionaire.

https://www.reddit.com/r/The_Donald/comments/5zkgf2/the_idiot_actually_doubled_down_white_house/

White House correspondent April D Ryan tweeted “So in 2005 @POTUS was not a Billionaire. He made in 2005 over 100 million dollars.”

This woman does not know the difference between “income” and “net worth.” Somebody tried to point this out, and the silly fool doubled down:

“You proved my point. He made 150 mil that year ha. There you go!”

She also tried to protect herself by protecting her account, and the happy kiddies over at Reddit promptly published archived copies of the tweets, so everyone could see.

Did I mention that we have a freaking White House Correspondent (American Urban Radio Networks, AURN, since 1997!) that doesn’t know the fundamental definitions undergirding our tax system?

Actually, President Trump was assessed $5.3-million, and was assessed an additional $31.2-million AMT, on $31.6-million TAXABLE income on Line 43. What on earth do you think the tax code is all about, if not defining what TAXABLE income is?

That little word “taxable” seems to escape everyone’s analysis – it’s the one number nobody seems to want to talk about. Everyone talks about total income of $153-million, while ignoring the $103-million deductions from his Statement 1 on Line 21, and the $17-million in deductions from Schedule A on Line 40. The two pages of his 1040 do not include details for either of those supplemental documents.

President Trump’s income in 2005 was NOT $153-million. At best it was his AGI of $48.6-million reported on Line 38.

That his total taxes due were higher than his taxable income, without even counting self-employment tax, is something that no one seems to want to explain, either.

Maybe we can get obama’s college transcripts next? Or maybe the video the LA Times is hiding.
Now those would be scoops.
Then that little guy could post another tweet using “seriously” to show she isn’t lying as usual.

Did anyone notice that she was holding up the 1040 in such a way that their SSN’s were showing? IIRC, showing someone’s SSN in public, without their permission, is a federal felony! And the containing document was stolen on top of that!!

When do you suppose we can see the arrests starting?
