A student who recorded his teacher calling Trump’s election an act of terrorism has been suspended. Does that sound right to you?

Campus Reform reports:

Student suspended for recording ‘act of terrorism’ prof

The student who filmed his professor calling Donald Trump’s election “an act of terrorism” has received a one-semester suspension from Orange Coast College (OCC).

The previously anonymous student, Caleb O’Neil, has also received a number of other sanctions for recording his professor, Olga Pere Stable-Cox, including a mandatory meeting with the Dean of Students before he is readmitted, as well as remaining on disciplinary probation for one semester upon return from suspension.

Additionally, O’Neil must write an apology letter to professor as well as a three-page, double spaced essay discussing why he videotaped the professor despite “knowing that it was a violation of the course syllabus;” his “thoughts and analysis” on why he shared the video with others; what he thought would happen to Stable-Cox; the video’s impact “and ensuing damage to Orange Coast College students, faculty, and staff;” “other choices [he] could have made to resolve the situation;” and “[how he] will prevent this from happening again in the future.”

What *exactly* did the course syllabus state about recording lectures?

Regardless: Kid, they’re doing you a favor by not letting you attend there. You don’t need to waste your hard-earned money on their indoctrination. Go someplace where you’ll actually get an education. Shake the dust off your feet, and don’t look back.

I agree but losing a semester’s worth of tuition and fees could be a real hardship for many. Any chance he could sue for a refund?

In my 40 years of college teaching, I routinely provided an outlet strip on the table at the front of the room so students could plug in their recorders to tape the lectures. I also had students give copies of their lecture tapes to other students who were sick or out on field trips. When I was at Harvard, we videotaped the lectures and made the videotapes available on reserve in the library.
In my opinion, this instructor at Orange Coast is simply penalizing the student for making her look like a bigoted fool. The administrators are making their school look bigoted and foolish by penalizing a student for doing something that is common in better schools.
