St. Louis U. Forced to Redesign Mascot Again

“SLU has heard the comments from alumni and students who care about the Billiken”

St. Louis University recently redesigned their mascot but no one likes the new design so they’re headed back to the drawing board. Why does everyone have to like it?

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports:

Billiken backlash: SLU will redesign mascot again

St. Louis University president Fred Pestello reached out to some friendlier-looking creatures at the St. Louis Zoo for tips on how to make the school’s mascot less nightmarish.

Pestello didn’t get defensive when reaction to the new Billiken mascot turned ugly on social media two weeks ago. He responded with a sequence of playful tweets and then went quiet on the matter.

But Pestello returned to Twitter with a video Tuesday, announcing that the school would re-design the mascot that was recently unveiled.

He confirmed this afternoon that the Billliken would be undergoing another makeover.

“SLU has heard the comments from alumni and students who care about the Billiken,” Pestello told the Post-Dispatch in a message. “We are pursuing changes to the mascot. However, the award-winning new Billiken logo that debuted in November will remain unchanged.”
