Emails: George Soros Regretted Backing Obama Over Hillary in 2008

News from the latest document dump.

A new batch of Hillary Clinton’s emails was released last night on New Year’s Eve. One particularly entertaining exchange revealed that the progressive billionaire George Soros had some regrets over the 2008 election.

Kristina Wong reports at The Hill:

Clinton emails: Billionaire Soros said he regretted backing Obama

George Soros, a billionaire Democratic donor, told a close Hillary Clinton ally that he regretted supporting President Obama over her in the 2008 Democratic primary, according to an email released Thursday by the State Department.

Center for American Progress President Neera Tanden said in a May 2012 email to Clinton that Soros made the admission to her during a dinner.

“I told him I worked for you in the primaries and he said he’s been impressed that he can always call/meet with you on an issue of policy and said he hasn’t met with the President ever (though I thought he had),” Tanden wrote.

“He then said he regretted his decision in the primary – he likes to admit mistakes when he makes them and that was one of them,” she added.

“He then extolled his work with you from your time as First Lady on. You probably have heard this all before but on the off chance you haven’t, I thought I should let you know. Thanks again for doing the video!” she wrote.

An August 2012 article in The New Yorker said Soros gave $5 million to help elect Obama in 2008, and that he later felt snubbed by the president.

“Confidants say that, although he still supports Obama, Soros has been disappointed by him, both politically and personally,” the article said. “When Soros wanted to meet with Obama in Washington to discuss global economic problems, Obama’s staff failed to respond.”

Soros recently weighed in on the 2016 election but his focus was on Republicans.

Eliza Collins reported at Politico:

Soros: Trump and Cruz want you to be afraid

George Soros is calling on voters to “resist the siren song of the likes of Donald Trump and Ted Cruz” if the U.S. is to effectively fight terrorism.

Soros, a prominent billionaire, Democratic donor, and founder of the Soros Fund Management LLC, wrote an op-ed in The Guardian titled, “The terrorists and demagogues want us to be scared. We mustn’t give in.”

In the article, Soros argues that extremist groups like the Islamic State and Al Qaeda are hoping to create a strong sense of anti-Muslim sentiment around the world so that Muslims see no other option but to get involved with terrorism.

“Jihadi terrorist groups such as Islamic State and al-Qaida have discovered the Achilles heel of our western societies: the fear of death,” Soros writes. “Through horrific attacks and macabre videos, the publicists of Isis magnify this fear, leading otherwise sensible people in hitherto open societies to abandon their reason.”

Will Soros have more regrets four years from now?

Yeah. There’s a lot of that going around. Kinda like swine flu. Except WAY worse…

He’s just trying to salvage his reputation. Obama is a dying brand. Soros wants to stay relevant.

I regret that Soros isn’t in jail.

I suspect that that was a lie told to Neera Tanden and Hillary Clinton knew the full truth: That Soros had supported Barack Obama at the Clinton’s request, because they thought he would be a very good sparring partner for her – sucking up votes that might go to a challenger who could beat her, but not able to beat her himself.

Sounds like Soros is shilling for JEB: In Soros’ mind, the one we must not be afraid of, who we must adore or at least mildly worship, tastefully, in a kind and gentle way!

OBTW: Do fear the two GOP front runners, Cruz and Trump, they are terrible, he says, terrible, each in different ways!

Yah! 😉

No significance to this. Soros is just sucking up to Hillary.

No matter how chummy he may or may not have been with The Won (and I surely wouldn’t take Soros’s word for any info on that … I personally believe that he was very happy with Hurricane Barry’s swath of destruction), he’ll need to suck up to somebody else in the near future.

He’s also giving his conditions. What he’s buying with all the loot support is access … which is no big news, either, since that’s what all mega-donors to political campaigns think they’re buying.

The only thing different here is that most politicians are affable suckups themselves, and receptive to this sort of approach. Unfortunately for Soros, Hillary is a vindictive homunculus who is unlikely to brush off a past slight.

It is second hand sucking up. Soros is sucking up to a potentially useful flunky who in turn gets to suck up to the boss lady. Brown nosing 201.

    gives some explanation

” Now check out the company Soros keeps in top tier of money managers “

Anybody who thinks that George Soros has the best interests of this or any country in mind, hasn’t been paying attention. He views countries as a means for him to make money, and if disrupting a country’s economy makes him money, he will do it, regardless of the harm to others.

He would have voted for Hitler if had run.

What?! Snoros didn’t find Mack Daddy appealing in the open society sense? O, mon dieu! How un-inclusive!

The following book, The Octopus, about the life of convicted inside trader Sam Israel, discusses Soros a lot because Soros was one of the guys around Israel while he was learning how the insider trading game worked. The game is pretty simple, find a way to reward people in hard to trace ways for providing you favors by providing useful information. Kind of like the Godfather, don’t demand an immediate return favor, simply understand that when the situation requires it a return favor will be expected.

I would assume that Soros determined it was in his best interest to extend this principle to the political world. High level elected officials can be helpful in any number of ways, not least sending the message to subordinates like the SEC that taking time away from examinations of conservative donors to look at George’s affair would not be kosher. He’s been convicted once of insider trading (by France). No reason to take chances with US authorities. It is a cost of doing business.

This is just Soros saying to Hillary now that Obama is in lame duck territory and she leads the Dem primary race that he always liked her best. It’s what businessmen do – adjust sails when the winds change. His only loyalty is to his bottom line, which is his right, of course.
