If we ignore Salaita's tweets and simply look at his qualifications for a position in Native American Studies, which is the area in which he was hired, he appears to be wholly unqualified for the position. Nothing in his background indicates that he is knowledgeable about this area. At best, some of his writing is marginally related to Native American studies. but the connection consists of vague and quite dubious analogies between the experiences of Palestinian ARabs and those of Native Americans. On the basis of the information available, as someone with experience in this area, I would not allow him to teach an introductory course in Native American Studies, much less appoint him to a tenured position.

In light of his apparent lack of qualifications in the area of Native American Studies, the fact that he was recommended for a position by the faculty of that Department raises grave concerns as to the competence of that department to govern itself. The senior administration should investigate the Native American Studies department.

You ask "why the line was drawn here?"

My guess? Because people who are fed up with the PC bullshit spewing from our universities finally started playing the prog drone's game of "doxxing" those who say outrageous bullshit that they disagree with. This prick played the social media game, and it blew up in his face. The progs are NOT used to that happening... they like to dish it but can't take it.

The problem with conservatives is that they mostly just want things to stay the same. They're not itching to agitate like the progs are. So they mostly stay silent. But as Eric Erickson likes to say... "You WILL be made to care."

In this case, the conservatives were finally made to care, probably by the mere thought that such an outrageously idiotic douche-bag as the ass-hat pictured above would be a tenured professor with the right to fill their children's heads with prog mush all while sucking from the public teat.

It's time to care and take our country back from these morons.

I'm calling BS on some of this analysis.

By the criteria I gather he was judged by, a substantial fraction of US professors should never have been hired, and while you note that this was a hiring decision, by those same criteria a large fraction of employed professors should be adding "Would you like fries with that?" to their everyday working vocabulary.

My point is that this decision is much more quantitative than qualitative, and therefore we are entitled to ask the question of why the line was drawn here, and not at, for example, the many many examples you chronicle on Legal and Campus Insurrection of similar, albeit infrequently as intense "incivility" et. al. Most famously as of late, UCSB Professor Mireille Miller-Young, who pled no contest to multiple charges of violence, with "grand theft from a person" appearing to be counted as a "violent felony", and was therefore sentenced to three years probation plus the usual community service etc.

So this violent felon is celebrated by academia, and I can for example add Bernardine Dohrn, who per Wikipedia plead guilty to aggravated battery, while the beyond intemperate but not (yet) physically violent Salaita is persona non grata. We are fortunate that this level of "discourse" towards Zionists, which include myself, is still considered by a lot of academia to be a bad thing, but....
