Worse than the omission is the constant need to declare in advance what they will or won’t do. The ‘leaders’ of the Republican party have not even had time to meet with their members, and they are out there telling the world what they won’t

To paraphrase (badly) something I read just after the election – “If the electorate just wanted to have Congress work better or break the gridlock, they would have elected more Democrats.”

The electorate expects policy change to come out of the election of Republicans.

The writers above may have some influence on the far left fringe, but they’re mostly just provocateurs and ideologues who preach to the choir. The guys and gals who make the big bucks as Democrat strategists, consultants, pollsters etc. are the ones to pay attention to. One of the most important voices is a guy named Doug Sosnick. He warned not long after the 2012 election that the “Obama coalition” was not sustainable if Obama is not on the ballot.

I think the Democrats who matter now understand Sosnick was right. Greg Sargent’s piece the day after the election was filled with quotes from strategists and pollsters suggesting they know Democrats have a serious problem. They’re now back to where they were when Howard Dean made the obnoxious comment that Democrats have to figure out how to appeal to Southerners who drive around in pickup trucks with Confederate flag bumper stickers. I think that’s one reason why they spent so much money in Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina and even Texas. It failed this time but they’re developing an infrastructure to better compete there in the future.
