Liberation of WWII Memorial

Liberation of WWII Memorial

(Live Twitter embed at bottom of post)

AP via WaPo reports:

A crowd of people has converged on the World War II Memorial on the National Mall, pushing through barriers to protest the memorial’s closing under the government shutdown.

WTOP Radio (http://bit.ly/GXQKGV ) reports Republican Sen. Mike Lee of Utah and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas were among those who gathered Sunday morning, along with former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. Cruz says President Barack Obama is using veterans as pawns in the government shutdown.

The memorial has become a symbol of the bitter fight between Democrats and Republicans over who is at fault since the shutdown began.

On Sunday morning, a protest by truckers converged with a veterans march at the World War II Memorial. Participants cut the links between metal barriers at the National Park Service property and pushed them aside.

Bless these vets and their supporters. They are pushing back on behalf of all of us.

Why so many police? These Americans are just exercising their First Amendment rights — just like the signs said.

Or were they supposed to know that only illegal aliens have First Amendment rights to protest the government in Washington, D.C.?

I love that they carried the Barrycades all the way to King Barack’s Spite House. Should have chucked them over the fence onto the lawn.

The Spirit of 2013! Make one wrong move barry and your term just could be up.

Notice that the vets have no trouble as to which “house” they put the blame for this gangster government.

They KNOW where this came from.

[…] Breach The “Barrycades” And Take Them To The White House: Some great pictures coming from veterans who have had enough of President Obama and the Democrats […]

I wonder how many of these truckers are Teamsters union members. It stands to reason it would be a significant portion.

Uh oh.

jdkchem in reply to punfundit. | October 13, 2013 at 2:52 pm

Probably not as many as you think. Most truckers are owner-operators so they are in effect small business owners. Though there are plenty of company drivers as well. Where you would get your teamsters would be the local drivers.

Henry Hawkins in reply to punfundit. | October 13, 2013 at 8:10 pm

Can’t speak to those who actually showed up, but the organizers were independent truckers. Teamster truckers tend to drive somebody else’s truck and I’m pretty sure few companies would pay for the fuel on that.

God Bless these brave people!! Can you hear us now, President Obama????

As I said before here at LI,

the viral 10-second clip has to be Ted Cruz demanding,

“Mr. Obama … Tear Down This Barricade!”

LHC (who thinks a little Reaganesque shake of the head wouldn’t go amiss to add to the effect)

I hope this inspires people in every state to march on and take down the barrycrap.

snopercod in reply to janitor. | October 13, 2013 at 5:06 pm

Here in NC the owner of the Pisgah Inn filed for an injunction in federal court and the National Park Service agreed to stop barricading them if the owner would retract the papers. What is the NPS afraid of?

Henry Hawkins in reply to snopercod. | October 13, 2013 at 8:11 pm

It means they know they’d lose.

janitor in reply to snopercod. | October 13, 2013 at 10:16 pm

Not only will they lose, but also discovery would show that the Barrycrap was requisitioned and readied months ago. Signs and barrycades and contracts to put them in place all were not created within hours of the shutdown, or even days or a week or two. This was planned barrycrap.

OT but Dan Snyder should offer to put president peckerheads likeness on the side of the team’s helmets and change the name to the foreskins. Fitting name for the team representing the city.

Hey government, the people own America. Not the lily livered fools sitting on their big behinds.

Fluffy Foo Foo | October 13, 2013 at 3:26 pm

Can a lawyer explain to me how it is okay for a jogger to be ticketed at Valley Forge and not on the National Mall?

Also how can the “1st Amendment activities” exemption not legally apply to say Gettysburg National Park, which is mostly and an open-air park/memorial?

The lead paragraph of the AP report insinuates that this is a consequence of the shutdown and hence, unavoidable.

It most certainly is NOT.

The Barrycades that have bee erected in Washington and across the nation are an arbitrary and deliberate provocation on the American people.

The liberal media will never tell the truth. Especially when it exposes Barack Obama and his clique for what they are.

I was going to try to watch Morning Joe this morning to see how they covered it. As I flipped over to MSNBC, they were introducing Mike Allen from Politico as the talking head to promote the lead story at Politico today (which I have not read).

The very first sentence out of his mouth was that this “government by crisis” was created by Republicans and it’s what we can expect for the next three years. Which is, of course, completely false.

The reason why these “continuing resolutions” create a crisis every Sept 30 is because for four years the Democrat controlled Senate refused to pass a budget. The Senate did finally pass a budget this year for the first time of Obama’s presidency, but before the Democrats would go to conference and negotiate a final budget, they demanded the debt ceiling be raised FIRST. In other words, using their idiotic language, the Senate Democrats held the normal budget process hostage unless Republicans agreed to pay the ransom of raising the debt ceiling before negotiations even began.

I didn’t even last one minute on MSNBC to see how the Vet March was covered because of Mike Allen’s blatant lie in his first sentence of commentary.

Competence:

Access Denied: Barrycades easily breeched by 90-year-old geezers in wheelchairs.

Access Mandated: 3-1/2 years, $600 million+ cost website designed by people IT nerds disparage as “Effing Stupid Geeks!” which simultaneously blocks enrollees and welcomes scammers.

Karen Sacandy | October 13, 2013 at 3:50 pm

I can’t believe anyone rated this story less than 5 stars! These actions show there are Americans who will not accept a wannabe tyrant. These are the life blood of America. I feel so much better. It’s reassuring.

Get out the “Impeach Obama” signs.

Meanwhile, would someone please barrycade http://www.letsmove.gov/ It’s still functioning, and blogging, and pissing me off no end.

Henry Hawkins | October 13, 2013 at 4:13 pm

This is the civil disobedience that me, Rags, and others have advocated. Shit works. Look for opportunities.

This is one reason Fox isn’t covering this:

/Palin/Cruz memorial protest story is going viral quickly on right, will shape House GOP scene on M & T

Fox is in the tank for Rove and Krauthammer

snopercod in reply to radioone. | October 13, 2013 at 5:09 pm

Right on! I cancelled my subscription to Fox News (on satellite) just for that reason. I happened to be staying in a hotel last week and turned on Fox out of boredom. Guess what? They were bashing Cruz and Lee over the “shutdown”. Fox has become nothing more than a straw man.

This is exactly why Rove, McCain, Graham, Cornyn and the other back-stabbers of the GOPe were (and remain) dead wrong on the shutdown. Two things are happening now.

1. Obama and the democrats are looking like spoiled little children throwing a temper tantrum, and

2. People are noticing that with 17% of the government “shut down”, life goes on just fine without those millions of “non-essential” drones.

You can lead a Vet to a Barry-cade …

… but you can’t make him drink the Kool-Aid.

9thDistrictNeighbor | October 13, 2013 at 6:03 pm

Just look at those tea party goons, cleaning up the garbage and returning the barricades to their rightful owner. Who do they think they are…Americans?

CNN mocks Veterans March – calls them Tea Party crazies:

http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Journalism/2013/10/13/CNN-derides-million-vet-march

CNN has shown its true colors. I’ll never watch it again.

Canusee in reply to Uncle Samuel. | October 13, 2013 at 8:46 pm

    Welllll, food for thought:

“What the hell were Cruz and Palin and Lee doing giving speeches at the vet march in DC? Think about it. This was a time for the people to lead themselves without any partisan (and like it or not they are partisan in non-republican eyes) leader. All the talk of needing a leader is bs in this case. Sometimes no leader is leader. And this was one of them. What could have been an American, a Veteran moment became a singular republican moment. They should have been just another citizen, not singled out at the the event. They should have been in the background. So many Americans now do not see this moment for what it is — riot police — on veterans. Today Cruz and Palin and Lee actually advanced the cause against veterans and America. Sometimes the important need to not be important. This should not have been a Cruz or a Sarah moment. At all. I am so sick of politicians and leaders not letting We the People be We the People. Get the f… out of the limelight. (could have said without the f-bomb, I know. But did not) I am so disgusted they interfered. All the speeches should have not been. People were all ready to go; already had the message that is why they were there.”
    ****
“Our veterans so had this one. On their own. They did not need to be led by the politicians.”
    *****
“It is not about these guys. And the news will only focus on these guys being there, nothing else. The media WILL report they were there. The media will formulate, with these guys as validation, that this was a tea party event and not a vet event. Stupidest thing they could have done. They should have been there if they wanted — as normal citizens — and refused any microphone and directed microphone to vets. They walked right into a media/alynsky trap because of a false self-importance of their need to be there to give the vets credibility.”

BannedbytheGuardian in reply to Canusee. | October 13, 2013 at 9:06 pm

Some of what is written there has merit. However not everyone was a veteran -there were kids & mothers & many non vet affiliated.

The memorial belongs to everyone. I actually don’t see why everyone should not be there including everyone on LI who lives within 300 miles.

There is no organised resistance so if Palin Cruz & lee want to associate with it – or even speak – it is their right. I can’t speak for Cruz & Lee but Palin certainly knows what it is to send a son to war .

The press will actually be too scared to report much about it either way .

jdkchem in reply to Canusee. | October 13, 2013 at 11:52 pm

The author of that piece is an idiot. There’s this thing called support. As a vet it’s nice to know that some of the civilian population is supportive. Food for thought.

NC Mountain Girl in reply to jdkchem. | October 14, 2013 at 1:38 am

That support is more than just they moral variety. The Park Service Police aren’t going to get too heavy handed in the presence of members of the US Senate.

MarlaHughes in reply to Canusee. | October 14, 2013 at 7:54 am

Canusee, that was my thought as well. The vets have been protesting since the shutdown started. Other Congress people have been assisting them quietly for the most part, letting the vets themselves take center stage, as it should be.
Cruz and Palin are politically savvy enough where they should have been aware of how the media would portray their appearance at the protest and supported it from a distance instead of grabbing the microphones.

It was encouraging to have Ted Cruz, Sarah Palin and Mike Lee actually come to the protest to support the Veterans. I was wondering where the other Conservative Congressmen and Senators were.

MarlaHughes in reply to Uncle Samuel. | October 14, 2013 at 7:58 am

They’ve been there, just not in front of the media. Protestors and visitors have been snapping pics and posting them since the beginning.

9 news denver is reporting that riot police were needed to confront unruly vets.

This is so great! To the barrycades! To the barrycades! To the Spite House! To the Spite House!

Tumbrils are rolling slowly in the distance. If Obama won’t heed them, they will gain speed.

NC Mountain Girl | October 14, 2013 at 1:45 am

If the national media covers it at all, it will be the one person who showed up with the confederate battle flag. There seem to be some pics on Twitter with a clear look at his face. We need to identify if he is just a real moron or if he was yet another in the long line of leftists who manufacture racial incidents.

BannedbytheGuardian in reply to NC Mountain Girl. | October 14, 2013 at 5:16 am

America has had some great flags. Everyone knows ithe Confederate flag. I have to admit i would have to go & look up what the union flag was. I would then remember it yeah but it ain’t world famous like this one.

It might be one of the most recognisable & enduring symbols around. NC girl – you are showing your Chicago roots.

I want to see a whole mass of them flying. I like the old Californian republic one also & the old Florida one that says – -leave us alone .
