My spirits are lifted: A guard returns to the wall

My spirits are lifted: A guard returns to the wall

Don Surber returns to the blogosphere.

On April 27, 2012, I wrote One less guard on the wall:

Don Surber is giving up blogging:

After 7 years of blogging, I am quitting. I am exhausted. It was simply too much work. I am still employed by the Charleston Daily Mail and still writing editorial and columns and performing the sundry other tasks that go with any job.

Blogging was something extra. I loved blogging because I came in contact with readers directly. But over the past few months I realized I cannot continue doing both. I ain’t Superman.

I will miss you all and I appreciate the support from those who have emailed me.

I then entered into one of my periodic “woe is me” thingies:

I understand it.  I really do.

I often joke about blogger burnout, but it’s a diagnosed condition for a reason….

Independent conservative bloggers are a dying breed, I’m sorry to say.  They either burnout, or they join an established website.

Yet the walls still have to be guarded by independent bloggers who bear a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom, and while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, you want us on that wall, you need us on that wall.

Thank you for your service, Don.

Having written another one of those “thingies” just last weekend, I was surprised today when I realized that as of August 8, Don Surber had returned to duty guarding the wall:

He calls himself now “The Official Scorekeeper of the 2016 Election“:

Yeah, well, you can’t let that irrational exuberance get you, can ya, Prof…???

Faith in mankind is ill-advised, even in the best of times and people. Psalm 118-9 warn us of this…and many other places in Scripture show us the frailty, foolishness and fallibility of even the greatest of human beings.

I have never seen his blog before. It is now safely tucked away in my blogs folder on my desktop.

Don’s one of those rare creatures: a career newspaperman who never went bat guano leftist crazy, yet is still working in the biz AND blogging.

Glad to know he couldn’t stay completely away! Adding back that bookmark . . .

With respect, guarding the wall is an inappropriate, lethal tactic and therefore a harmful metaphor.

1- The day of the fixed fortress is gone. Multi-dimensional/full-spectrum warfare obsoleted it. 2- The wall is already mined, blown and breached as well as blown down, spread out and salted. 3- The fort’s entrails are being used to hang its defenders, such as are left of them, poor sods.

Manoeuver is the appropriate metaphor. Move to combat. Close with the enemy, Annihilate him.

Anyone who mounts a fixed position, such as the wall of a fortress – their home or otherwise – is unserious and suicidal.

Now, WAJ is serious and not suicidal. So I present with this comment not criticism but an appeal for use of the appropriate manoeuver-based metaphor.

It’s a spiritual metaphor, referencing Nehemiah. There are some walls and boundaries that should always be defended. Not lines in the sand, but the Law of the L–D G-D.

First we have to GET to 2016.

I’ve seen this happening with other bloggers, including myself. http://workingclasscon.3littlefoxes.com/?p=21

I am another independent, conservative blogger. Well, actually, I help run a substantial business, but I blog for fun at http://civilhorizon.com. I only post once a week or so, but you may find my take on things worthwhile, as I often do yours.

“Yet the walls still have to be guarded by independent bloggers who bear a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom, and while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, you want us on that wall, you need us on that wall.”

Professor, I’m interested in why you say this. I really understand why your website is significant in the discussion, but curious. As a (very tiny almost miniscule barely noticeable) blogger of a small blog with a couple other bloggers, I have to say it gets tough. You don’t want to just parrot the “big” bloggers or the news since so many people are all tuned in to them, but believe me, it gets difficult after a while especially since blogging is so time consuming and last fall was so depressing. As a (very tiny almost miniscule barely noticeable) blogger, it’s pretty tough to even see a reason for maintaining a blog for your reader/s.

This is NOT a pitiful pitch for traffic because basically who cares. You do what you do because you must. I’m just interested in your fine-minded rationale.
