National U.S. media ignores story of woman defending children from intruder with handgun

A Loganville, Georgia, woman who fled to her attic with her children to escape an intruder successfully defended herself after shooting him with her revolver. The man, who had pried open her front door while she was home alone with her two children, was in the process of searching her home room by room until he finally came upon her and her children in the attic, at which point, the mother shot him in the face and neck, emptying her six-round revolver. The man who had broken into the home, Paul Ali Slater, fled in his car but collapsed a short distance away and was arrested by local authorities.

The story has been completed ignored by national media. The only non-local source that had covered the story, reported by the Atlanta Journal Constitution this past Friday, has been from another country: Britain’s Daily Mail. A slew of local outlets picked up on the AJC’s story covered it, including WSB-TV in Georgia, a local FOX affiliate in North Carolina. By Sunday morning, FOX news national published the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s January 4 writeup on their site.

It took a foreign newspaper and Facebook to bring news relevant to the gun-control debate to my attention. The institutional news media is getting beaten to stories and news. So long as information flows freely, their irrelevancy will be assured.

If it doesn’t fit the narrative, it’s not going to be reported.

Don’t think for one minute that they “missed” this story. It’s being deliberately ignored.

The motto, never ever give a fair presentation of all arguments.

Observer in reply to Sanddog. | January 6, 2013 at 6:11 pm

And it’s more than just the “no private citizen needs a high-power gun” narrative that this story doesn’t fit.

The criminal was a black man (with a long criminal record); the victimized homeowner appears to have been a suburban white woman/mother (her photo has not been shown, and I’m basing this assumption on the fact that her husband, who has been shown on t.v., is white). The MSM does not like to report on black-on-white crime. As we saw in the Trayvon Martin fiasco, the preferred MSM narrative is that blacks are under attack from whites (and “white hispanics”).

It’s not called the “Bill of Needs,” it’s called the “Bill of Rights” — the “need” argument is just a deliberate misdirection.

RickCaird in reply to Sanddog. | January 7, 2013 at 12:30 pm

Which is why we have so few news organizations now. If the news is about the narrative, then it is merely propaganda.

Do you really think they are beaten to the stories or do they choose to ignore the stories! You said both in the post! Their willful ignorance makes them very relevant! No offense, I love the blog, but David Gregory has a much bigger audience.

    Who is David Gregory?

jacksonjay in reply to Sally Paradise. | January 6, 2013 at 6:15 pm

Pretending he doesn’t exist doesn’t make him go away! He was the guy rewarded with the Obama interview last Sunday after he took on the NRA! Oh, by the way, looks like his little magazine stunt is just gonna quietly go away!

Just like so many pretended before the election that Romney was gonna win! Denial ain’t just a river in Egypt!

scooterjay in reply to jacksonjay. | January 6, 2013 at 8:15 pm

@jacksonjay What we are saying is that the MSM will continue to show it’s bias and keep relegating themselves to the ash heap of history. America is waking up to such bias and the viewer numbers for network news are starting to reflect. Why do you think there is such a push to marginalize ANYTHING conservative when it comes to media? They can’t let a loud mouthpiece go on unbridled….witness the “stop Rush” movement that has been afoot for many years. I’m surprised that Rush has lived as long as he has….maybe he has a great security team armed to the nines!

Phillep Harding in reply to jacksonjay. | January 7, 2013 at 4:10 pm

“Rewarded” with an interview with Zero? Oh, my. Such a privilege. Whoopy-doopy. Did he have to kneel on the floor and bump his head before His Imperial Majesty? Or is it you who seeks to kneel before him and kiss his… ring.

Incidentally, I don’t recall ever hearing of this “David Gregory”. From context, some sort of MSM reporter?

I’m inclined to doubt anyone is concerned about this, rather small, blog not being as well knows as someone with the force of the legacy media behind it.

        Yet.

Com’on Professor, do you really think any American liberal garbage MSM is going to report this? Of course not. Doesn’t fit their narrative.

I first saw links to this story at Australian blog Catallaxy, which hat-tipped Instapundit and Legal Insurrection for the link, then I saw it in the UK Daily Mail, then in the Sydney Daily Telegraph. Blogs and non-US media are the places to be these days.

American mainstream media is probably the last place I’d look for actual news.

I read an account & thought there needed to be a better timeline .for instance it had the lady at her upstairs office talking to her husband when she saw a man outside a window. [ I would presume he called 911 ] .

Very few burglers enter when it is known people are up & about , so it appears he was after them specifically which puts a new light on everything.

That the guy was able to get up & drive away after being shot 5 times at close range is remarkable. That he had exit wounds in the throat & chest is something not even on tv crime shows.

Perhaps it is all true after all it is Georgia. as to the media not picking up an excellent entertaining story I quote Honey Boo Boo to the pageant judges as she pinches her little rolls of tummy fat …

“They don’t know a good thing when they see it “.

Give it time. And remember to call stories like this, by appropriate links, to the attention of your legislators. Do not neglect your Senators and Congressmen if they happen to be Democrats.

If the Washington Post gets scooped often enough by constituents, they will learn to pay attention. And if they don’t, they will go bankrupt.

“If the Washington Post gets scooped often enough by constituents, they will learn to pay attention. And if they don’t, they will go bankrupt.”

    exactly!

“The story has been completed ignored by national media.”

They’re still busy workshopping to find a “bash-the-Tea-Party” angle on it?

Woohoo! And I thought all those Georgian peaches were Southern Belles but underneath is a Mama Grizzly that will do whatever it takes to protect her cubs. Girl Power!
The perp was shot by a .38, you know, if I was hiding in an attic probably without any light using my body to shield my babies and frightened with shaking hands trying to steady a loaded .38 I’m sure I wouldn’t be able to aim very accurately either. The hospital says bullets did hit internal organs, lung and others punctured. She stopped the attack, that’s the important thing. Protect our Second Amendment!

The gatekeepers within the establishment media kept this one pretty hush-hush as well:

You could summarize it in 2 lines.for us.

Staunch anti-gun politician, N.C. State Senator R.C. Soles (D), shoots home intruder; criminal charges now pending against the Senator.

In other news, economy is still “unexpectedly” stagnate.

      Better?

BannedbytheGuardian in reply to Piet. | January 6, 2013 at 8:40 pm

Yes by far. This way we can search with key words & avoid Huffpo.

Why would you give AOL any traffic . Advertisers follow you around .

Loren in reply to Piet. | January 7, 2013 at 11:15 am

According to snopes, the senator was an A or B rated legislator by the NRA. The incident happened in 2009 or 2010.

So that could be a reason it is not in the news. It’s not news.

That doesn’t say there isn’t an anti-gun agenda, this just isn’t an example.

It’s a two-fer! The media not only suppressed a story about guns being effective for self-defense, they also did not report this as a story about black criminals, judging by the photo at the linked Daily Mail article. Since the identity of the woman is undisclosed, we can’t tell if she is white or black or other. But the media routinely suppresses details that class crimes as black-on-white or black-on-black, so unreported info about the woman’s race isn’t important in this instance.

Were it up to morons like Sen. Freinkenstein, this woman would have been limited to protecting her children with a single shot from a flint lock musket – after the appropriate fingerprinting, background checks, and fees, of course.

Had she missed, her and her children would no doubt be dead.

Why does anyone need a weapon that fires more than 10 rounds? In case you miss with the first ten, you idiots.

Sorry, I’m just dumbfounded by the blinding ignorance of these gun-control fanatics.

If you click the to the WSB-TV site, you’ll find another story under the Local Headlines that appeared on the same day and covers a similar situation. Unfortunately, it turned out completely differently. An unarmed female homeowner was shot several times by intruders. They came to her door twice after midnight, breaking in the second time. She had a home alarm system that was useless in the event. I thought it was an interesting juxtaposition given that, based on the pictures of their homes, these two women appear to live in similar neighborhoods.

DDsModernLife in reply to Moonbeam. | January 6, 2013 at 9:22 pm

Thank you for mentioning the unfortunate incident of the unarmed woman who was similarly hiding in her home during a break-in. That incident happened not too far (relatively speaking) from my own residence and it definitely bears mentioning alongside Anne Sorock’s post here. (Say, Anne, how ’bout an update?) As I recall, that poor woman faced three intruders.

There are people in this country who have been wrestling realistically with the problem of violence in schools for some time.

Here’s one.

oh, and here’s some more news the Washington Post won’t report

I was surprised that the very first place I saw this story was my local (Roanoke, Va.) CBS affiliate. However, since airing I can no longer find the video on their website.

This station also accurately reported that the shooter at the Appalachian Law School in Grundy, Virginia several years ago, was subdued by students who had retrieved their guns from cars. But hours later, they were putting out the national narrative that the gunman was “tackled” by students.

Does “Big Tiffany” police their affiliates? Who knows? But there are a lot of coincidences in the changes in their stories.

It’s Bush’s fault… Haliburton… Obama is God…

How are they supposed to have time for this kind of menial story, when they have so much propaganda they have to put out? Have some compassion.

And why not call them by their true name: the Democrat media.

Meanwhile, in gun-controlled Australia…

A gang of young thieves have attacked people in their beds with machetes during a string of violent home invasions in Sydney’s west, leaving some with horrific and disfiguring injuries.

“Police say the group, believed to be aged in their teens and early 20s, could also be involved in a number of armed robberies on businesses in the area.

“They are hunting for up to six youths who stormed six different homes in Auburn between September and November last year.

“The young offenders stole only mobile phones, laptops and cash.

“Six people were injured, one in each robbery, including a man who was left missing a large chunk of his forehead after being hit with an axe.

“Another man suffered horrific injuries to his face and skull after being attacked with a machete.”

    BannedbytheGuardian in reply to s_dog. | January 7, 2013 at 1:11 am

I know that area well. The word is inside job hence the delay . The Police Station is also 200mtrs from the train station . I lived there unlike Blabbering Blair in his city glass office.

I challenge any of your Catallaxy crowd to be able to say that also. They are every bit ivory tower as any elite.

There is no way any of those. ‘victims’ are ever getting a gun license. They would be lucky to have a workvisa.

Anyhow no one is dead or even shot .so what is your point?

BannedbytheGuardian in reply to BannedbytheGuardian. | January 7, 2013 at 6:46 pm

      Sorry DAwg did not reply.

why is it big news that 6 homes were broken into & 2 people dinged on the head in a city of 4 million?
it hardly affects the Bondi Based cafe lattee Blair & co.

As a background info , when I bought my property there we did notice that the door had been Jammied & reinforced. We judged either gambling debts or prostitution [ bed in living room?] ESP as the owners were Chinese .

But in 4 years living there we had no problems & today it earns 25,000 rent & has turned out to be a good Investment. Prices in this area are high currently – I sometimes think of selling but it would be another area taken over by Muslims.

This points up and crystallizes the situation we are now in. Conservative issues used to be about illegals and bail-outs. That changed instantly in November.

After the 2012 election we are now in a fight to prevent the installation of an oppressive regime. Make no mistake, gun laws are the point of the spear if I may be forgiven that metaphor.

The Democrats will not be content with reinstituting the Clinton ban. They want registration, which I predict will lead to confiscation within a couple of years. They are in the process of “freezing” the American people. Put the guns and their owners in the database where they can be selectively disarmed by whatever means necessary. If that means SWAT raids with overwhelming force to intimidate your neighbors, then so be it. While you wait in your homes the enforcers get to pick and choose where they will strike next. Resist and everyone at that address dies in a hail of bullets.

It is the number one priority now that each and every officeholder in the Congress and Senate be told to vote against any and every gun regulation, no matter how “reasonable” it may seem, or how politically expedient it may look. There can be no compromise, as the first step is down a very steep slope that is looking more and more greased.

“The story has been completed ignored by national media.”

Ummmmm… not too sure how to break this to you folks, but this censorship has been going on for YEARS. Media only covers criminal or tragic gun use to insure guns are portrayed only in the most negative way possible.

Any NRA member who ever read the NRA monthly magazine, “American Rifleman” has seen the monthly column “The Armed Citizen” where between 8 to 20 *VERIFIED* news articles from around the USA are listed, many verbatim.

Read it online at: http://www.nraila.org/gun-laws/armed-citizen.aspx

From the column: “Studies indicate that firearms are used more than 2 million times a year for personal protection, and that the presence of a firearm, without a shot being fired, prevents crime in many instances. …”

Repeating this, to sink in: “…2 million times a year..”

How many times do we see a few of these 2 million stories these stories or any positive story about guns?

Clearly this is evidence of near total systematic politically motivated censorship.

When you hear liberals lying and saying the NRA wants more children murdered, while they are completely wrong, kindly remind them it was NRA members that stepped forward to answer the call and sent personal rifles to Britain in 1939 to help fight Nazis. It was the NRA firearms instructors that trained the military to shoot in WWII. It was the NRA that pushed for mandatory FBI and police training. NRA currently manages and sets the global standard for police training programs. They have gun safety classes for hunters, concealed carry, and for kids. They promote responsible gun ownership, scientific research, recreational and competition shooting matches.
More: http://www.nraila.org/gun-laws/did-you-know.aspx

When was the last time you read a newspaper article or media report on the results from one of the thousands of shooting matches held weekly across the country? What is Cowboy Action Shooting? Who are the current Olympic US Team shooters? What are the Olympic shooting events?

While the NRA supports the 2nd amendment, much to the frustration of some conservatives, they are not a conservative organization and are only concerned with safe responsible gun ownership, not political party squabbles.

Someone interested in safe responsible gun ownership and fighting this politically motivated censorship would join the NRA and help.

My good friend and I had a discussion after that NRA fella was on tv. I said I thought Gregory should have revealed that his children go to a school with armed guards. She said she didn’t want any guns in her school (I didn’t know she had one)and they were dangerous in homes too. She told me that usually when someone tries to use a weapon to defend themselves against home invasion they end up losing the weapon to the intruder and getting killed with it.
For no reason at all I said “that’s just an urban legend, plenty of people have successfully defended their homes”.

So thank you for this story I am going to email it to her. And while I was writing “for no reason” I couldn’t help but wonder if this particular urban legend is used the same way political correctness is used – to make us docile. Thanks again for posting this story.
