UPDATE (6:13): Shooter identified as the son of a teacher from the school. Motive for the rampage is still unknown. Via Fox News:

The shooter, who sources identified as Adam Lanza, 20, shot his mother in the face at their home in Newtown, Conn., then went to nearby Sandy Hook Elementary School where she taught and gunned down her entire class, according to sources. Lanza was found dead inside the school, according to officials. Eighteen of the children and six more adults were dead at the school and two more children died later, according to Connecticut State Police Lt. Paul Vance.

UPDATE (3:25): A visibly emotional President Obama addresses the nation. Offers his condolences to the victims and their families and promises that “meaningful action will be taken,” regardless of politics.

Looks as if the gun control debate will rage in the wake of this tragedy.

UPDATE (2:34): Identity of shooter revealed: **Note, this report incorrectly identified shooter. Shooter was Adam Lanza, younger brother of Ryan Lanza. See update above.**

The gunman is dead, state police have confirmed. CNN identified him as Ryan Lanza, 24. Lanza is a former Newtown resident who lived in Hoboken, N.J. According to his Facebook page, Lanza studied at Quinnipiac University in Hamden.

Police in Sandy Hook are at a house on Yogananda Street and have surrounded it with yellow tape. The house is owned by Lanza’s mother, according to public records.

The report went on to detail:

WFSB has reported that a body, possibly the shooter’s mother, was found inside the house.

UPDATE (1:39pm):  Via the Associated Press:

A shooting at a Connecticut elementary school Friday left 27 people dead, including 18 children, an official said.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was still under way. Another official, speaking on condition of anonymity for the same reason, said the gunman at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown was killed and apparently had two guns.

A law enforcement official in Washington said the attacker was a 20-year-old man with ties to the school and that one of the guns was a .223-caliber rifle. The official also said that New Jersey State Police were searching a location in that state in connection with the shootings. That official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the source was not authorized to speak on the record about the developing criminal investigation.

The press conference has been pushed back. Unless there are significant developments in the meantime, I will post additional updates upon its conclusion.

UPDATE: Fox News is reporting that “at least 26 killed.” (Added: CNN is also running a live update feed, which can be found here)

Reports have trickled in throughout the morning about a shooting that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

There is, as of yet, no confirmation regarding the exact amount people who have been killed or wounded, or whether there was more than one gunman. At least one gunman is dead, according to CNN.

More details are expected at a press conference is scheduled for 1pm.

From CNN:

The mom who spoke to CNN’s Meredith Artley said she heard “at least 100 rounds” being fired.

The shooting began about 9:35 a.m., the parent said. There was a “pop pop pop” in the hall outside the room. Three people went out of the room into the hall where the sounds had come from. “Only one person came back,” we were told.

The witness told Artley that she then called 911. She said she never saw the shooter but she later was escorted outside the room past two bodies lying in blood.

Updates to follow.
